For a personal Microsoft account, open Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts, expand the account under Accounts used by other apps, choose Remove, then confirm with Yes. This removes the account’s connection to that Windows device; it does not delete the Microsoft account. If the account belongs to work or school, check Access work or school instead—its removal process is different.
What “Accounts used by other apps” means
Windows can make an account available to apps so you do not have to sign in separately everywhere. This list is different from the account you use to sign in to Windows, accounts configured for email, calendar, and contacts, and organizational connections listed under Access work or school. An account may also be signed in separately inside an app such as OneDrive, Office, Teams, Store, Outlook, or Edge.
Connected accounts can also affect features such as Windows Search, which may include cloud content from services such as OneDrive or Outlook. See Microsoft’s Windows Search and privacy guidance and its overview of account management in Windows.
Remove a personal Microsoft account
- Save your work and close apps that are using the account.
- Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
- Under Accounts used by other apps, select or expand the account you want to remove. Check the full email address before proceeding.
- Select Remove, then select Yes to confirm.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the same general Settings location, although the layout, wording, and categories shown can vary by version and account type. Microsoft documents this removal route in its instructions for signing out or removing an account from Teams.

Removal is local to this PC. It does not close or delete the Microsoft account. Apps that used the saved account may ask you to sign in again, and removing it here does not automatically sign it out on another PC, phone, browser, or Microsoft service.
If there is no “Remove” button
A missing Remove control is a clue to check what kind of account Windows is showing; it does not point to one universal cause. Use the closest match below before trying a more disruptive change.

Check whether it is a work or school account
Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. If the organization account appears there, select it and choose Disconnect, then follow the confirmation prompts. Microsoft’s Windows account guidance describes this route. Disconnecting removes the organizational connection and sign-in information from the device; it does not delete the organization account. It can also affect access to company or school email, files, VPNs, Microsoft 365, or other managed resources.
Labels and available actions depend on how the account was added and whether the device is registered or managed. Microsoft’s guide to adding a work or school account to a Windows device explains that choosing No, this app only during sign-in avoids adding that account to the device, while another sign-in choice can make it available to other apps.

If it is your Windows sign-in account
If the account is the identity you use to sign in to Windows, Windows may not offer a way to remove it as an app account while it is still the active Windows identity. One option—only if you want to change how you sign in—is to switch that Windows profile to a local account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Select Sign in with a local account instead and follow the prompts.
- Sign out and complete the change as instructed.
- Return to Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts and see whether Remove is available.
This changes the Windows sign-in method; it does not delete the Microsoft account. It can change synchronization and access to Microsoft services in that Windows profile, so it is not the first step for someone who only wants to remove an extra app account. If the account was added inside an app
Windows and individual apps can keep separate sign-in state. Sign out or remove the account in the app that prompted you to sign in, then check Windows again. For example, Teams has its own profile menu and sign-out option; OneDrive has an unlink-PC option in its settings; Office, Store, Outlook, and Edge also have app-specific account or profile controls. Exact labels differ by app version. Signing out of Teams on this PC, for example, does not sign you out of Teams on other devices or from other apps, as Microsoft notes in its Teams account guidance.

Removing the local connection does not necessarily revoke cloud permissions granted by an administrator; Microsoft says users cannot revoke administrator-granted permissions in the My Apps portal.

After removing the account
- Apps that depended on the Windows account connection may ask you to sign in again. Mail, calendar, contacts, Office, Teams, Store, OneDrive, or cloud-content search may behave differently depending on how the account was used.
- If the account still appears, sign out of the app that originally added it and check both Email & accounts and Access work or school. Restarting Windows and reopening Settings may help refresh a stale display, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- If it is absent from Settings but still appears in an app, browser, or OneDrive, check that app’s own account or profile settings. Do not assume removing a Windows app-account connection clears every app session or stored credential.
- Removing an account from one PC does not remove it from other devices or close it. Closing a Microsoft account is a separate, potentially destructive process and is not required for this cleanup.
