To remove a Google Account from an Android phone or tablet, open Settings, find the account-management screen, select the account, and tap Remove account. This disconnects the account from that device; it does not delete the Google Account or erase its cloud data. If you are selling or giving away the device, remove all personal Google accounts before you factory-reset it.
Remove a Google Account from most Android phones
- Open Settings.
- Tap Passwords & accounts. Depending on the phone, this may be called Users & accounts, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, Password, passkeys & accounts, or Manage accounts.
- Choose the Google Account you want to remove. Check the email address carefully if more than one account is listed.
- Tap Remove account.
- Confirm by tapping Remove account, Delete, or the equivalent button.
- If prompted, enter the phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password.
The exact wording and layout vary by Android version, manufacturer, and device. Google’s Android account-management instructions describe the general process and alternative menu names. If you cannot find the account menu, open Settings and search for accounts, manage accounts, or remove account.
Use Android Settings for a device-wide removal. Signing out of Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, or another individual app may affect only that app. Likewise, removing a device from your Google Account’s online device list is a separate security action and is not a replacement for removing the account locally before handing off the phone.

On a Samsung Galaxy
On many Galaxy phones, go to Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts, select the Google Account, then tap Remove account and confirm. Older Samsung software may instead show Cloud and accounts → Accounts or simply Accounts. Samsung notes that paths can differ by model and software version; see its Galaxy support guidance.

What removing the account changes
Removal disconnects the selected account from the phone and removes its associated locally synchronized information, such as email, contacts, and settings. Calendar entries tied to that account may also stop appearing in the device’s calendar view. Other Google Accounts on the phone are not removed.
This action does not delete the Google Account, Gmail address, Drive files, or Google Photos library from Google’s servers. It also does not automatically erase every photo, downloaded file, message, or app on the phone. What remains depends on where the content is stored, which account synchronized it, and whether it was backed up. Google explains the local effects of account removal in its account-management guide.

Apps installed through Google Play generally stay installed when you remove an account, but access to account-dependent features, updates, purchases, subscriptions, or saved app data may depend on the account that owns them. Purchases and subscriptions do not transfer to another Google Account just because you remove the old one. Before proceeding, verify important contacts, photos, and files from another device or browser, and make sure they are saved or backed up where you intend.
If it is the only Google Account on the phone
Android may ask for the device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password as a security check. This is not necessarily a request for the Google Account password. Once the account is removed, Google services such as Gmail, Play Store, Drive, backup, and synchronization may require another account for their full use. The phone itself may still work, though Google-dependent features can be limited. The exact behavior varies by device and software.

If you plan to keep using the phone, add or verify the account you want to use before relying on Google backup or synchronization again. If the account is managed by your employer or school, follow its offboarding instructions; an administrator may control the account or device.
Before selling, trading in, or giving away the phone
Removing an account is not the same as wiping the phone. For a transfer, use this order:

- Back up what you need. Check contacts, photos, files, messages, and other data. Google’s Android backup guidance covers photo-backup settings.
- Confirm access. Make sure you know the Google Account username and password and the device’s screen-lock credential. If you recently changed the Google password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before a factory reset.
- Remove every personal Google Account using the Settings steps above.
- Remove other accounts and handoff-sensitive data as appropriate, such as a Samsung account, work profile, payment cards, transit cards, or eSIMs. Follow the relevant manufacturer, employer, carrier, or wallet-provider instructions.
- Factory-reset from Settings. A reset erases data stored on the phone and returns it to setup. Google recommends charging the device to at least 70% before resetting. See Google’s factory-reset instructions.
- Leave it at the welcome or setup screen. Do not sign back in with your own account after the reset if the device is being handed to someone else.
Why remove the account before resetting?
Factory Reset Protection (FRP), part of Android device protection, is intended to stop someone from using a protected device after an unauthorized reset. If a device is reset without the proper authorization, setup may ask for a Google Account previously associated with it or other credentials. Google says removing the Google Account from the device turns off device protection; removing it before the reset is therefore the safer handoff sequence. See Google’s device-protection guidance.
A factory reset alone is not a reliable substitute for removing the account first. Samsung also warns that resetting a protected Galaxy by buttons or another unauthorized method can lead to a request for the previous Google credentials during setup. This protection is not something to bypass: if the phone is already at an FRP verification screen, use the previously associated account, recover that account through Google, or contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Samsung advises owners locked out by FRP to contact an authorized service center with proof of purchase.

If the account will not come off
- “Remove account” is missing: Confirm you are in Android Settings rather than an app’s settings. Search Settings for Manage accounts. Check whether the account belongs to a work profile or another user profile.
- It is a work or school account: The organization may manage the profile or restrict removal. Ask its IT administrator to remove the work profile or explain the approved offboarding procedure; do not try to work around device management.
- The device is a child, guest, or restricted profile: Switch to the device owner profile or ask the family/device administrator to make the change.
- The account still appears inside an app: The app may retain its own sign-in session. Remove or sign out of the account in that app separately, or check whether it is signed in through a different profile.
- Contacts or photos seem to have disappeared: They may have been visible through synchronization rather than stored locally. Check the account’s cloud library or another backup before assuming the data was erased.
- You cannot unlock the phone or forgot the password: Do not reset it blindly, especially before a transfer. Account recovery or manufacturer support is the appropriate route. A recovery-mode reset may erase the phone but can leave FRP active.
If you changed your Google password recently, use Google’s reset guidance before proceeding; it recommends waiting 24 hours before a factory reset. For a lost or stolen phone, use Google’s official device and account-security tools to protect the account. A remote sign-out is separate from locally removing the account and does not guarantee that the phone has been properly reset for a new owner.
