To remove an unwanted D:, E: or recovery-partition letter in Windows 10, remove its drive-letter assignment in Disk Management. This hides the volume from normal File Explorer browsing but does not delete, format, or erase the partition.
Before changing anything, confirm the volume by its letter, label, capacity, file system and status. Do not remove the letter from C:, a boot/system volume, a paging-file volume, or a drive currently required by applications.
What removing a drive letter does
A drive letter is an access path such as D:. Removing it disconnects that path from the volume, so the volume normally disappears from File Explorer. The partition, files and allocated storage remain intact, and administrators or recovery tools may still be able to access it by assigning another letter or mount point. This is different from Delete Volume, Format, shrinking a partition, disconnecting a disk, or encrypting data. Microsoft defines the remove operation as removing a drive letter or mount point from the selected volume (Microsoft documentation).

- Back up important files if you are unsure which volume you are viewing.
- Do not target the active Windows volume (normally
C:), a boot or system partition, a paging-file volume, or a volume used by databases, virtual machines, backup jobs or installed software. - Small entries labelled EFI System Partition, OEM Partition or Healthy (Recovery Partition) are special. Removing an accidentally assigned letter can be appropriate, but never delete or format them casually.
- Close programs and File Explorer windows using the volume. A command prompt whose current folder is on that drive can also keep it in use.
Remove the letter in Disk Management (recommended)
- Press Windows + X and select Disk Management. You can also search for Create and format hard disk partitions or run
diskmgmt.msc. - In the lower pane, find the volume carrying the unwanted letter. Compare its drive letter, label, capacity, file system and status with what you see in File Explorer.
- Right-click that volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Select the listed letter or path and click Remove.
- Read the warning and select Yes only after confirming the volume. Close Disk Management and reopen File Explorer if the old entry remains briefly.
Disk Management may continue to show the partition even after the letter is removed; that is expected. The volume has not been deleted. Exact menu wording or availability can vary with the volume type and your permissions. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guide and drive-letter instructions.

Use DiskPart when the graphical option is unavailable
DiskPart requires an elevated Administrator: Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. Its commands operate on the currently selected object, so selecting the wrong volume can change the wrong drive. Stop and verify the output before running remove.

exitFor example, if inspection confirms that volume 4 is the unwanted F: volume:

exitSpecify the letter explicitly. A bare remove can remove the first letter or mount point DiskPart finds on the focused volume. Use remove letter=F, not remove F:. Microsoft documents DiskPart, select volume and remove.

If Remove is missing or disabled
Common causes include insufficient administrator permissions, an inaccessible or uninitialized volume, a mount point rather than a drive letter, or a protected system, boot, paging, OEM, EFI or special GPT partition. Windows may deliberately block ordinary changes to those volumes.
If the letter was assigned temporarily while repairing boot files or Windows Recovery Environment, finish that work first and then remove the temporary letter. An EFI System Partition contains boot files; do not delete, format or modify it unless you have positively identified it and understand the repair procedure. For a normally exposed Recovery partition, removing only its accidental letter is the relevant fix.
If a letter is reported as in use, close software that may be reading the volume and retry. If DiskPart reports an incorrect parameter, recheck the selected volume, letter syntax, and whether the access path is actually a folder mount point.

Prevent Windows from assigning the letter again
Removing the current letter and preventing future default assignment are separate actions. For a correctly identified non-system volume, use the advanced DiskPart attribute below:

exitnodefaultdriveletter tells Windows not to assign a default letter to that selected volume. Do not apply it casually to the Windows boot volume or a data volume that applications depend on. The documented command is described in Microsoft’s volume-attributes reference.
Remove a folder mount point instead
A volume can be mounted at a folder such as C:MountedDrive rather than given a letter. In DiskPart, identify and select the volume, then remove that exact path:

Restore a drive letter later
In Disk Management, right-click the volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, select Add, and assign an available letter. With DiskPart:

exitMicrosoft documents the assign command. Applications that stored files under the old path may need their settings corrected after reassignment.
What this method cannot do
- It does not free disk space. Deleting or shrinking a partition is a separate, potentially destructive operation.
- It is not a security or privacy feature. Someone with suitable administrative access may assign a new letter or mount the volume.
- It does not necessarily remove every reference to the volume from management tools, backup software or system utilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will removing a drive letter delete my files?
No. It removes only the drive-letter access path. The partition and files remain; do not choose Delete Volume or Format.
Can I remove the C: drive letter?
Do not do this on the active Windows volume. Windows and applications expect their system paths and may stop booting or finding files if the letter is changed.
Why is the Remove button grayed out?
The volume may be protected (EFI, boot, paging, OEM or another special partition), inaccessible, in use, or you may lack administrator rights. Confirm the volume before trying DiskPart.
Why did the letter return after a restart?
Windows or a device-management process may assign a default letter again. After removing the current letter, an administrator can set the selected volume’s nodefaultdriveletter attribute.
Can I hide a drive for security?
No. Removing a letter only removes a normal access path. Use encryption, permissions or physical disconnection for security-sensitive data.
