For a custom dropdown, remove an authored image with background-image: none;. If the image comes from a background shorthand, override that declaration instead. A native HTML <select> needs a separate check: the image may belong to your CSS, the closed control, or the browser/operating system picker, which cannot be styled consistently everywhere.
First identify where the image appears
Before changing CSS, determine whether the image is on the closed dropdown control or only inside the menu that opens. Also check whether the element is a custom widget or a native <select>. In browser DevTools, inspect the element and its wrappers, then look in the Styles and Computed panels for background-image and background.
- Closed control: the visible field or button has the image.
- Opened menu: the image appears only after the list expands.
- Custom dropdown: ordinary HTML elements such as a button, list, or div are being styled by your code.
- Native select: the browser renders an HTML
<select>and its platform-specific picker.
Remove an authored CSS background image
When the rule uses background-image
Set the property to none on the element that receives the image:
.dropdown {
background-image: none;
}The rule must match the actual element and win the cascade. If another stylesheet, a more specific selector, or an inline style still applies the image, adjust the selector or move your override later in the cascade. Use !important only when you cannot otherwise control the existing rule.

When the image comes from the background shorthand
The background shorthand can set the image along with color, position, repeat, size, and attachment. Replace the shorthand when that is the declaration shown in DevTools:

background: #fff;
}Choose the color that fits your design. This resets the other background sub-properties, so it may also remove a deliberate gradient, position, repeat setting, or background size. If those settings must remain, override only the image and then restore any required sub-properties explicitly.

Styling a native <select>
Native select controls have limited CSS control because browsers commonly use platform-native rendering. If your own stylesheet supplies the image, remove it from the select itself:

background-image: none;
}appearance: none removes some system styling, but it is not a guarantee that every browser or operating system will expose identical control over the opened picker. It also removes familiar native cues, such as a platform-provided arrow, so add a clear replacement indicator if your design needs one and verify keyboard, focus, touch, and high-contrast behavior.

Inspect the select or its wrapper and remove the declaration from that element. A wrapper may carry the background even when the select itself does not.

Image inside the opened picker
For a native select, the expanded list is often drawn by the browser or operating system. CSS may not be able to remove every part of that picker consistently. If complete visual control is essential, use a custom dropdown component rather than relying on the native popup.

Do not replace a select with a decorative element alone. A custom control needs an accessible name, a clear expanded/collapsed state, keyboard operation, and an appropriate semantic pattern; otherwise the visual fix can make the form harder to use.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Inspect the visible dropdown and its wrappers in DevTools.
- Find the winning declaration for
background-imageorbackground. - Apply
background-image: noneto remove only the image. - If a shorthand wins, replace it with an intentional
backgroundvalue and check the other background properties. - For a native select, test the closed control and the opened picker separately.
- If
appearance: noneis used, restore an understandable arrow or other affordance and test keyboard and touch interaction. - Recheck focus indicators, contrast, and screen-reader labeling after the visual change.
