A free workflow is to identify oversized files in Google PageSpeed Insights, resize each image to its largest real display size, compress it in Squoosh, select WebP or AVIF where your audience and stack support them, deploy the derivatives, and test the page again. This approach reduces bytes without blindly lowering quality.
Why image dimensions matter as much as compression
Compression cannot fix an image that is fundamentally too large for its layout. A 3,000-pixel-wide photograph delivered into a 700-pixel slot still carries pixels the visitor never sees. The browser downloads and decodes those pixels before displaying a smaller version.
Set the maximum width to the largest slot the image actually occupies. If a hero image can render at 1,200 pixels on a wide desktop, a 1,200-pixel source is usually a more sensible ceiling than the camera’s 4,000-pixel original. Create additional candidates when the layout changes materially between desktop and mobile.
Measure the real requirement
- Record the source image’s intrinsic width and height.
- Record its rendered dimensions at common desktop and mobile breakpoints.
- Include room for high-density displays, but do not multiply every asset by two automatically.
- Keep the original source file separately so you can make new derivatives without repeatedly recompressing a derivative.
Deliver responsive candidates
For a responsive image, provide several widths and let the browser choose. A typical pattern is:

The width and height attributes preserve the aspect ratio and help the browser reserve space before the file arrives. Adjust the widths and sizes expression to your own layout rather than copying these values.
A free, repeatable workflow
1. Find the expensive images
- Open Google PageSpeed Insights and test the published page URL.
- Read the image-delivery opportunities and list the files identified as oversized or inefficiently encoded.
- For each file, note intrinsic dimensions, transferred bytes and rendered dimensions. Check both mobile and desktop reports.
Images can represent 60%–65% of the bytes on most web pages, according to Google documentation (2024 documentation, crawled in 2025). That makes image work one of the highest-impact free optimizations, but do not assume every image needs changing: compare the existing file before replacing it.
2. Resize before encoding
Export a derivative at the largest width the layout needs. Generate separate desktop and mobile candidates when the crop or displayed size changes substantially. Do not enlarge a small source to meet an arbitrary target; an upscaled image adds no useful detail.
3. Compress locally in Squoosh
- Open the Squoosh web app.
- Enable Resize and enter the maximum width you selected.
- Choose a codec and adjust its quality or lossless setting.
- Use the before-and-after preview at the image’s normal display size and at 100% zoom.
- Download the result and compare its byte size with the original.
Squoosh processes images locally in the browser, so the files do not leave your device. It is well suited to interactive, one-file-at-a-time work and exposes the trade-off between bytes and visible artifacts.
4. Pick settings by image type
| Image | Good starting choice | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs | Lossy JPEG, WebP or AVIF | Sky gradients, faces, foliage and block or ringing artifacts |
| Logos, diagrams and screenshots | Lossless WebP/PNG, or a higher-quality lossy setting | Fine text, one-pixel lines and sharp contrast edges |
| Images with transparency | PNG or alpha-capable WebP | Halos, jagged edges and the appearance against the actual page background |
| Animated images | Retain an animation-capable format supported by your delivery stack | Playback, frame quality and browser compatibility |
Lossy compression discards information to reduce bytes and is usually effective for photographs. Lossless compression preserves the source pixels and is safer for graphics, transparency and text-like edges. Chroma subsampling in a lossy format can create colored fringes around high-contrast text, so judge the preview rather than trusting a quality number.

WebP, AVIF, JPEG and PNG: which should you use?
WebP is a smaller replacement for many JPEG, PNG and GIF uses. Google reports that WebP images are about 30% smaller than comparable JPEG and PNG images at equivalent visual quality. AVIF can also provide strong compression. Neither format is automatically smaller in every case: a transformation can make an already optimized file larger.
Use WebP when you need broad modern-format coverage
WebP supports lossy and lossless encoding and transparency. It is a practical default for many photographs and transparent graphics when your CMS and target browsers handle it.
Test AVIF instead of assuming it wins
AVIF is worth testing for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Compare the actual exported bytes and preview, and provide a fallback if parts of your audience or publishing stack do not support your chosen delivery path.

Keep JPEG or PNG when they are already the best result
A carefully optimized JPEG can beat a WebP or AVIF export for a particular image. PNG remains useful for lossless graphics and transparency. The correct choice is the smallest file that retains acceptable appearance and works with your delivery system.
Wire optimized files into HTML or a CMS
Upload the derivatives to the same media workflow your site uses, then update the content or build output to reference them. A <picture> element can offer a modern format with a fallback:

<img src="photo-1200.jpg" width="1200" height="800" alt="Description of the image">
</picture>
Use the fallback your audience and CMS require. Google Search documentation lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF among supported image formats, but support for a particular HTML, CDN or CMS path still depends on your implementation.
Do not optimize only the visible hero
Audit below-the-fold images, thumbnails, avatars, background images and images loaded by components. Set sensible intrinsic dimensions, use responsive candidates, and lazy-load noncritical images according to your framework’s conventions. Do not lazy-load the primary above-the-fold image if doing so delays the main content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Validate the result after deployment
- Publish the new files and clear any application or CDN cache that could serve the old asset.
- Run PageSpeed Insights again for mobile and desktop.
- Open browser developer tools, reload the page, and inspect the Network panel. Confirm the requested URL, transferred bytes, dimensions and format.
- Check the rendered image on a normal phone and desktop viewport, including dark and light backgrounds where relevant.
- Compare the new file with the original. Keep the smaller file only when its appearance and behavior are acceptable.
Google cautions that a third-party transformation can occasionally produce a file larger than the input. Verification is therefore part of the optimization, not an optional final polish.
Batch processing with ImageMagick
For many files, a local command-line process is more repeatable than opening each image manually. A JPEG example using ImageMagick is:
magick input.jpg
-sampling-factor 4:2:0
-strip
-resize "1200x>"
-quality 82
-interlace Plane
-colorspace sRGB
output.jpg
1200x> limits the width to 1,200 pixels without enlarging smaller files. Change the dimensions and quality for your assets, test a representative set, and compare the output before replacing originals. For WebP or AVIF, use the encoder and quality controls available in your installed ImageMagick build, then inspect the result rather than assuming the extension guarantees a smaller file.

How to choose a free tool or setting
| Decision factor | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Final bytes | Is the file smaller at an acceptable visual quality? |
| Dimensions | Does the pixel width match the largest real rendered slot? |
| Image features | Do you need transparency, animation or lossless edges? |
| Delivery compatibility | Can your browser audience, CMS and CDN serve the chosen format? |
| Automation | Are you handling one image interactively or a repeatable batch? |
| Privacy | Does the file stay on your device during processing? |
Squoosh is a strong free starting point for private, visual, one-file-at-a-time work. ImageMagick-style tooling is better when a build or batch process must produce consistent derivatives.

Troubleshooting common problems
The optimized file is larger
Check whether the source was already optimized, whether metadata stripping or a codec setting changed, and whether you compared the same dimensions. Keep the original when it is smaller and visually equivalent.
Text looks fuzzy or colored
You may be seeing lossy quantization or chroma-subsampling artifacts. Try a higher quality, lossless WebP/PNG, or retain the original format for that graphic.

Transparent edges have a halo
Preview the exported file over the actual page background. Retain an alpha-capable format and avoid flattening against the wrong background color.
Mobile still downloads the desktop file
Inspect the Network panel and verify that srcset and sizes describe the real layout. A missing or inaccurate sizes value can cause the browser to select an unnecessarily large candidate.
PageSpeed shows no improvement
Confirm that the new URL is requested, caches are cleared, and the audit is testing the deployed page. Other resources, render-blocking code or slow server responses may dominate the score even after image bytes fall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe page looks different after conversion
Compare at normal display size and 100% zoom, check color management and transparency, and use a different codec or quality. Do not judge from file size alone.
FAQ
Can I compress an image without losing any quality?
Use lossless compression, but the byte reduction may be smaller than with lossy encoding. For photographs, a carefully selected lossy setting can be visually indistinguishable at normal display size while reducing bytes much further.
Is AVIF always better than WebP?
No. AVIF may be smaller for one image and larger for another, and delivery compatibility differs. Export both when practical and keep the result that meets your byte, appearance and compatibility requirements.
Should I delete my original images?
No. Keep original source files outside the delivery path. They let you create new sizes, crops or quality settings without accumulating generation loss.
Does resizing improve SEO directly?
Resizing reduces transferred bytes and can improve loading metrics when images are a significant bottleneck. It does not replace descriptive alternative text, stable dimensions, accessible markup or other page-quality work.
