In WooCommerce, Stripe determines the transaction fee, so changing the payment plugin alone does not reduce the rate. The practical route is to measure your store’s effective cost, reduce avoidable international and currency-conversion charges, offer suitable lower-cost payment methods, and ask Stripe about custom pricing when your volume justifies it.
The published figures below are Stripe’s United States schedule reviewed September 30, 2026. Rates, payment-method availability and legal rules differ by country and account, so verify the live Stripe pricing page and your Stripe dashboard before changing checkout.
Who controls Stripe fees in WooCommerce?
WooCommerce’s official Stripe documentation states: “The fees for each transaction are determined exclusively by Stripe themselves.” The Stripe WooCommerce Extension connects your account and exposes supported payment methods, but it does not erase or renegotiate Stripe’s charges. The official plugin is listed on WordPress.org.
Stripe charges according to the payment method used by the customer. Your actual cost can also include international-card, currency-conversion, dispute, refund and account-specific charges.

Start with your store’s effective fee
Do not optimize from the headline card rate alone. Use a representative period of successful payments and compare the fees recorded in your Stripe account with the processed volume:
Effective processing rate = total processing fees ÷ processed payment volume × 100
- Choose a period with normal sales volume.
- Export or inspect Stripe’s balance and fee records for successful payments.
- Separate domestic cards, international cards, currency conversion, ACH or other payment methods, refunds and disputes.
- Compare the result with your WooCommerce order and payout records.
This is an operating estimate, not a formal invoice reconciliation. Taxes, reserves, refunds, disputes, custom pricing and product-specific charges can change the final amount. As of July 2026, WooPayments provides a detailed fee-related ledger for selected periods; its fee documentation explains the categories.

What Stripe’s U.S. list rates mean
| Payment situation | Published U.S. Stripe charge | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Successful domestic card | 2.9% + 30¢ | Applies to the reviewed standard U.S. online schedule; confirm your account and card type. |
| Manually entered card | Base card rate plus 0.5% | Reduce keyed entry where secure checkout or saved payment methods are practical. |
| International card | Base card rate plus 1.5% | Measure how many orders use cards issued outside your account’s market. |
| Currency conversion required | Base charge plus 1% | Check the payment currency against the currencies accepted by payout bank accounts. |
| ACH Direct Debit | 0.8%, capped at $5 | Eligibility, customer adoption, settlement and return risk matter; it is not automatically best for every order. |
These are published list figures, not a promise of your effective rate. Percentage-plus-fixed pricing behaves differently by order size: 30¢ consumes a larger share of a small payment, while percentage add-ons matter more on larger or cross-border payments.

Compare ACH with cards
For eligible U.S. orders, ACH Direct Debit’s 0.8% cap of $5 can cost less than a card transaction. Compare the fee for your typical order value, then account for customer preference, authorization and return handling, availability in your country, and the effect on checkout completion. Never assume every alternative payment method is cheaper in every market.
Offer methods customers will actually use
The Stripe extension supports cards, express checkout options, local payment methods and buy-now-pay-later methods. Evaluate each option on total cost, geographic eligibility, fixed and percentage components, customer familiarity, payment failures, refunds, disputes and reconciliation effort. A lower nominal rate that customers avoid may increase your total cost through abandoned checkouts.

Reduce international and currency-conversion add-ons
Stripe’s reviewed U.S. schedule adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is required. In WooPayments’ explanation, conversion can occur when the payment currency differs from the currency of a bank account used for payouts.
- Review sales by customer card country and payment currency.
- Identify which currencies your payout accounts accept.
- Model the cost of your current currency and payout arrangement before changing it.
- Do not assume opening a foreign-currency account will always save money; banking access, business country and Stripe terms determine the outcome.
Ask Stripe about custom pricing at meaningful volume
Stripe advertises custom pricing for businesses with large payment volume or distinctive business models, including interchange-plus pricing and volume discounts. There is no universal published qualification threshold in the available material. Request a written, account-specific offer when your fee audit shows enough volume to justify negotiation.

Include refunds and disputes in your cost model
A refund does not necessarily return the original processing fee. Stripe says standard processing and currency-conversion fees from the original transaction are not returned. WooPayments likewise says its transaction fee is not refunded when you refund a customer. Stripe also lists separate dispute charges. Track refund and dispute rates alongside successful-payment fees; no WordPress setting removes these costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you pass Stripe fees to customers?
Usually not as a simple built-in WooCommerce switch. WooPayments says it has no easy built-in method for adding the processing fee to the order total. It notes that a third-party gateway-fee extension has not been tested by WooPayments and cannot be guaranteed to work.
Before considering a surcharge, verify the law in every market you serve, card-network rules, Stripe’s terms and clear checkout-disclosure requirements. Rules vary by country and may depend on card type or industry, so obtain jurisdiction-specific legal guidance rather than copying a fee-setting snippet.

A practical reduction plan
- Measure: calculate your effective rate from Stripe’s actual fee and balance records.
- Segment: quantify domestic cards, international cards, conversion, ACH and other methods by order value.
- Test availability: enable only payment methods supported for your business and customers, then watch completion and failure rates.
- Control cross-border cost: review payout currencies and customer payment currencies without assuming a configuration change is automatically cheaper.
- Audit leakage: include refunds, disputes and manually entered cards in the review.
- Negotiate: present the volume and fee data to Stripe and compare any custom offer against your full existing schedule.
- Reconcile monthly: recheck the live Stripe pricing page and your account ledger because rates and eligibility can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the WooCommerce Stripe plugin lower transaction fees?
No. WooCommerce says Stripe determines the transaction fees. A plugin change may alter features or reliability, but it is not itself a rate reduction.
Are ACH payments cheaper than cards on Stripe?
On the reviewed U.S. schedule, ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5 versus 2.9% plus 30¢ for a standard domestic card. Eligibility, customer adoption, returns and account terms determine whether it is cheaper for your store.
Does WooCommerce add its own transaction fee?
The Stripe extension documentation says transaction fees are determined by Stripe. Your WooCommerce hosting, extensions or other services may have separate costs, but they are not Stripe’s processing tariff.
