If the brightness slider is already at its lowest setting, use a second dimming layer: Reduce White Point on iPhone and iPad, Extra dim on many Android phones, and monitor hardware controls or compatible DDC software for external displays. Windows and macOS do not offer one universal built-in control that extends every display’s hardware range, so their alternatives mainly reduce glare or alter the image.

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point.
  • Android: Settings > Accessibility > Extra dim, where the manufacturer provides it.
  • Windows: Lower the monitor itself, then use dark mode or Night light for white backgrounds; Night light is not true below-minimum dimming.
  • Mac: Use the display’s controls, or DDC-capable software such as BetterDisplay or Lunar for a compatible external monitor.

What “below minimum brightness” actually means

The normal brightness slider usually changes the panel’s backlight or pixel output within the range supported by the device. A second control can work in one of three ways:

  • Hardware dimming: the display emits less light. This generally preserves the image and colors best, but you are limited by the panel’s minimum. An external monitor may require its buttons or DDC (Display Data Channel) support.
  • Software dimming: the system reduces bright-color intensity, changes gamma, applies a dark overlay, or otherwise alters the rendered image. It can look darker without reducing the monitor’s physical backlight, and may affect color accuracy, HDR, screenshots, protected video, or contrast.
  • Glare reduction: dark themes, warmer color temperature, and fewer white backgrounds can feel more comfortable without reducing measured luminance by the same amount.

Start by lowering the ordinary brightness control. Then add only the second layer you need, so you can tell whether you are changing the light output, the picture, or simply the glare.

iPhone and iPad: use Reduce White Point

Exact steps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Display & Text Size.
  4. Turn on Reduce White Point.
  5. Adjust the percentage slider while viewing text, photos, and video.

Apple describes this feature as reducing the intensity of bright colors, not as creating a new hardware-brightness range. Apple’s accessibility documentation lists it among display options at apple.com/accessibility/features. An 80% setting therefore should not be described as “20% brightness”; Apple does not define the percentage that way.

It stays firmly in place without occupying desk space, making it perfect for clutter-free setups.

How to tune it

Keep the normal brightness low, then begin with a moderate Reduce White Point value. Increase it until white webpages and documents stop glaring. Heavy reduction can make photos, maps, video, and low-contrast text look muddy, so use the lowest effective setting.

Quick toggles and alternatives

You can assign accessibility features to the Accessibility Shortcut, and some iOS/iPadOS versions offer a corresponding Control Center control. Labels and Control Center layouts vary, so confirm the control shown on your device.

  • Zoom > Zoom Filter > Low Light: another software-darkening layer, but it is less convenient and can leave Zoom active accidentally.
  • Smart Invert: useful for bright apps without a dark mode, but it can make photos, video, and graphics look wrong.
  • Night Shift: warms color temperature; it is not a replacement for dimming.
  • Display Pulse Smoothing: Apple describes this as a smoother low-brightness experience for people sensitive to pulse-width modulation (PWM). It addresses flicker behavior, not necessarily a darker image. See Apple’s accessibility overview.

If the screen becomes too dark

  1. Use the Accessibility Shortcut again to disable Reduce White Point or the extra filter.
  2. Ask Siri to open Settings or turn the feature off if voice control is configured.
  3. Move to brighter ambient light and raise the ordinary brightness slider.

Restarting is not the preferred first fix because it may leave the accessibility setting enabled.

Android: turn on Extra dim

General path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Turn on Extra dim.

Google explicitly describes Extra dim as dimming the screen beyond the phone’s normal minimum. See Google’s Android accessibility guide.

Version and manufacturer differences

There is no single Android menu on every phone. Google’s current documentation says Pixel 9 and earlier use the Accessibility setting, while Pixel 10 and later integrate Extra dim into the brightness control in Quick Settings. Motorola documents Settings > Accessibility > Extra dim as an option when its Quick Settings slider is not low enough at Motorola support.

If you cannot find it, search Settings for Extra dim, check Display and Accessibility sections, or consult the phone maker’s current support page. Do not assume the feature exists on every Android model.

Other Android options

  • Dark theme: reduces large white areas in compatible apps.
  • Night Light: warms the display but does not guarantee lower total brightness.
  • Color inversion: Android says it applies to everything, including media, so photos and video may look incorrect.
  • Overlay apps: use caution. Permissions, battery effects, overlay behavior, HDR handling, and maintenance vary by Android version and app.

Windows: combine hardware controls with glare reduction

What Windows can and cannot do

On a supported built-in panel, use Settings > System > Display and move the brightness control. Microsoft notes that some PCs adjust brightness automatically and that the slider is absent on certain hardware configurations; see Microsoft’s brightness guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows has no universal built-in equivalent to Android Extra dim that extends every display’s backlight range. For a desktop monitor, its own on-screen menu or physical buttons are the most direct route.

Night light and dark interfaces

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Display.
  3. Turn on Night light, then open Night light settings and adjust Strength.

Microsoft describes Night light as changing color temperature and reducing glare from white backgrounds. It may make whites tan, yellow, orange, or red, but it should not be presented as true below-minimum brightness. Microsoft also notes that it may be unavailable with DisplayLink or Basic Display drivers.

For bright webpages and documents, enable Windows dark mode, an app’s dark theme, or browser reader mode. Settings > Accessibility also contains color filters and contrast themes. These alter the palette and can reduce color fidelity; Microsoft documents them at its color and contrast guide and its contrast-theme guide.

External-monitor checklist

  1. Use the monitor’s physical brightness control or on-screen menu.
  2. If HDR is forcing a bright mode, turn HDR off temporarily and test again.
  3. Try the monitor’s low-brightness or night preset.

Laptop brightness keys commonly affect only the built-in panel, not a connected monitor. Avoid treating an arbitrary overlay utility as universally safe: overlays can interfere with games, HDR, protected video, screenshots, and color management.

Mac: built-in filters, or tools for external displays

Mac display controls

Use the brightness function keys or Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Macs with an ambient-light sensor may adjust brightness automatically. Apple warns that disabling automatic adjustment can affect battery life, energy use, and long-term display performance; see Apple’s Mac brightness guide.

macOS does not provide a general Mac setting equivalent to iPhone Reduce White Point in Apple’s current accessibility documentation. Native alternatives include Dark appearance, color filters, grayscale, inverted colors, contrast controls, and the option under Accessibility > Motion to dim content containing flashing or strobing lights. These change the image or content behavior rather than guaranteeing lower backlight output. Display accessibility settings can also affect True Tone on supported Macs and displays; Apple explains that behavior at support.apple.com/en-la/102147.

External monitors: DDC versus software overlays

A monitor that supports DDC can accept brightness commands from macOS. A DDC command changes the monitor’s own control, while a software dimmer or black overlay changes only the rendered image. HDR and color-managed work therefore need extra care.

Choose the right method

Need Best first choice What changes Main trade-off
Dim an iPhone or iPad below the slider Reduce White Point Bright-color intensity Photos, video, and contrast can look muddy at high settings
Dim an Android phone below its minimum Extra dim Additional system dimming Menu and availability vary by manufacturer and version
Reduce white webpages or documents Dark mode, reader mode, or a dark theme Interface palette and white-area glare Not every app or site supports it
Preserve color accuracy Hardware brightness or a compatible monitor’s DDC control Physical display output Limited by panel hardware and compatibility
Warm a harsh display Night Shift or Night light Color temperature Not equivalent to lower brightness; colors become less accurate
Address possible low-brightness flicker Device-specific smoothing or another display Temporal modulation behavior Does not necessarily make the screen darker

Troubleshooting

The setting keeps getting brighter

Check auto-brightness or ambient-light adjustment. On iPhone and supported Macs, automatic behavior is separate from the manual slider. Disabling it may reduce automatic changes, but Apple notes the battery and energy trade-offs on Mac.

The second control is missing

Search Settings for “Extra dim” on Android and check the manufacturer’s documentation. On Windows and macOS, confirm that you are not expecting a platform-wide hardware extension that the operating system does not provide.

An external monitor ignores the control

Use the monitor’s buttons first. For software control, verify the cable, connection type, DDC support, permissions, and whether HDR is active. A black overlay can look darker while leaving the monitor’s backlight unchanged.

HDR or color-managed work looks wrong

Test with HDR temporarily disabled, then compare the monitor’s hardware setting with any software dimming layer. Photographers, video editors, and other color-critical users should favor a modest hardware reduction and verify their workflow afterward.

Text is now hard to read

  • Lower the strength of Reduce White Point or Extra dim.
  • Try dark mode instead of aggressively dimming a white interface.
  • Increase text size or contrast.
  • Avoid color inversion when photos, maps, or video matter.
  • Add some room light so the display is not the only illuminated object.

Dimming causes discomfort or apparent flicker

Some people perceive PWM flicker at low brightness. Apple identifies PWM as part of iPhone brightness behavior and describes Display Pulse Smoothing as a separate accessibility option. Persistent headaches, eye pain, visual disturbances, or migraine symptoms deserve professional medical advice; lower brightness is not a guaranteed treatment.

Brightness is only one part of comfort

A darker screen can reduce glare in a dark room, but excessive dimming, poor contrast, color shifts, flicker, or awkward viewing conditions can create other problems. Adjust the room lighting, text size, contrast, viewing distance, and color temperature separately. Apple’s accessibility guidance notes that dark interfaces may help with light sensitivity while low-contrast dark presentations can be harder for some people to read; see Apple’s dark-interface criteria.
