Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsResize first, then compress and inspect the result. Set the image’s pixel dimensions to what the destination actually needs, select a format suited to the content, and lower quality in small steps while checking text, edges, gradients and transparency. Keep the original so you can recover if artifacts appear.
A reliable online workflow
- Keep an original. Duplicate the file before uploading it to any service. Work from the duplicate so you can try different dimensions, formats and quality levels.
- Find the destination requirement. Check the upload’s maximum megabytes, maximum width or height, accepted formats and whether animation or transparency is required. A 4,000-pixel photo exported for a 600-pixel card carries data the viewer cannot use.
- Resize to the required dimensions. Preserve the aspect ratio unless the destination explicitly calls for a crop. Reducing pixel dimensions often cuts more data than changing a quality slider alone. Export at the largest size the layout needs, not an arbitrary “small” preset.
- Select a format. Use a photographic format for photos, a lossless or transparency-capable format for graphics that need it, and a format the destination accepts. Details are below.
- Compress in small steps. Export, note the file size, and view the result at its intended display size. If you see halos, blockiness, banding or unreadable lettering, step back to a less aggressive setting.
- Check the actual file. Confirm that the extension and MIME type match, transparency survived, animation still plays when needed, and metadata or color profiles did not change in a way your workflow cannot accept.
- Upload the smallest acceptable version. Keep the original and, when practical, a higher-quality intermediate for future edits.
Choose compression for the image, not a universal percentage
Lossy compression
Lossy compression discards image information. It is often effective for detailed photographs, where small changes are difficult to notice, but artifacts stand out around sharp edges, line art and text. Lower the quality gradually and compare the exported image rather than trusting a preset.
Lossless compression
Lossless compression preserves the original image data. It is appropriate when every pixel matters, when you will edit the file again, or when a graphic contains crisp type, diagrams or flat-color artwork. The resulting file may be larger than a lossy export.
Resize before you chase quality settings
Quality controls cannot compensate for unnecessary dimensions. A 2,000-pixel image displayed at 500 pixels can usually be resized first, then compressed with less visible damage than a full-size export pushed to an extreme quality setting.

Pick the right output format
| Image or requirement | Practical choice | Reason and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Photograph without required transparency | JPEG or WebP | Lossy compression can produce a substantial reduction; inspect faces, foliage, gradients and fine detail. |
| Graphic with transparency | WebP, PNG, or AVIF when supported | WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. Confirm the destination accepts the format. |
| Sharp text, screenshots or line art | Lossless PNG or lossless WebP | Lossy blocks and ringing are more visible on high-contrast edges. |
| Animation | Animated WebP or the destination’s required format | Check playback and browser or application support before replacing the original. |
| Broad legacy compatibility | JPEG or PNG fallback | Newer formats such as WebP and AVIF generally compress better, while older formats have wider historical support. |
Google describes WebP as supporting lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in its WebP documentation. RFC 9649 defines it as “an image file format based on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) [RIFF-spec] that supports lossless and lossy compression as well as alpha (transparency) and animation.” Read the RFC.
For a website, serve a modern format where your browsers and content system support it, and retain a fallback where compatibility requires one. MDN’s image format guide explains the trade-offs among common types. web.dev’s format guidance and image-performance guide cover delivery as well as encoding.
How to judge quality after compression
View at the intended size
Inspect the image in the context where it will appear. A flaw invisible in a 400-pixel card may be obvious when a user opens the full image; conversely, judging only at 400% magnification can lead you to keep unnecessary bytes.

Check problem areas
- Small type and diagonal lines for ringing or broken strokes.
- High-contrast borders for halos and mosquito noise.
- Sky, skin and other smooth gradients for banding.
- Fine textures such as hair, foliage and fabric for smeared detail.
- Transparent edges for a matte-colored fringe.
Run a two-file comparison
Export two nearby settings, record each byte size, and compare them side by side at the destination dimensions. There is no universal quality value: content, encoder and viewing size all change the result. web.dev recommends experimenting and judging the actual image at Image performance.

Online services, local tools and privacy
Online compressors are convenient: upload, choose dimensions or quality, and download the result. They also require your file to leave your device. For confidential documents, private photos, unreleased designs or regulated data, read the service’s current upload, retention, processing and deletion terms before submitting anything. The available documentation does not establish one universal policy for every service.
Local tools avoid uploading the image and can be easier to automate, but require installation and sometimes command-line knowledge. web.dev names Squoosh, ImageOptim and image optimization services as options; their current workflows, limits and privacy terms can differ, so verify the provider’s documentation. If you use an online service, remove unnecessary metadata only when your workflow allows it: metadata can contain useful copyright, orientation or location information.

Meet common size limits without guesswork
- Read the exact limit (for example, megabytes and maximum dimensions are separate constraints).
- Resize the longer edge to a sensible value for the displayed slot.
- Export a first version in a compatible format.
- If it is still too large, reduce quality one step at a time or switch to a better-supported modern format.
- Open the downloaded file and verify dimensions, orientation, transparency and readability before submitting it.
Do not repeatedly recompress an already lossy JPEG. Return to the original and make a fresh export; repeated lossy passes can compound artifacts.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a clean screenshot of a web page for documentation, testing or a content workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not an image-compression editor; it captures the page, after which you can optimize the returned image with the workflow above.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG or WebP (or a PDF). See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

Troubleshooting
The file is still over the limit
Check both dimensions and bytes. Resize the longer edge again, remove an unnecessary alpha channel, choose a compatible WebP or AVIF export, or lower lossy quality slightly. Start from the original rather than stacking exports.
Text looks fuzzy or has halos
Use lossless PNG or WebP, increase quality, and avoid enlarging a previously reduced image. Screenshots and diagrams need more protection around high-contrast edges than photographs.
Transparency became a solid color
The selected format or destination may not support alpha. Re-export to a transparency-capable format and test the downloaded file in the target application.

The upload is rejected despite a small file
Verify the required extension, MIME type, maximum dimensions, animation rules and color mode. A service can reject a technically small file that violates a different constraint.
An online compressor is unsuitable for a sensitive image
Stop uploading the original, review the provider’s current terms, and use a local workflow where your security requirements demand it.
A screenshot request returns a bot check or blank page
For ScreenshotNeo, inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers, then adjust wait conditions, headers, cookies, user agent or blocking rules in the documented request options. A bot check, blank page or failed load is not billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reduce an image without changing its dimensions?
Yes. Lossy or lossless encoding can reduce bytes while preserving dimensions, but the achievable reduction depends on the image and format. Resizing is often the larger saving when the source is oversized.
Is WebP always better than JPEG or PNG?
No. WebP supports both compression types, transparency and animation, but the destination must support it and some workflows still need a JPEG or PNG fallback.
Should I compress the original repeatedly?
No. Keep the original and create each new export from it, especially when using lossy compression.
