For an alphanumeric Spotify gift-card or Premium code, use Spotify’s redemption page in a web browser. For a scannable Spotify Code graphic, use the Spotify app’s scanner instead: it opens music or another Spotify page, but it does not add Premium time.
First, identify the kind of code you have

A redemption code is usually a string of letters and numbers printed beneath a scratch-off panel, on a receipt, or in an email. A Spotify Code is a visual graphic with distinctive vertical bars, often shown alongside music artwork or a Spotify link.

Redeem a gift-card or Premium code in a browser
- Open a web browser—not the Spotify music app—and visit spotify.com/account/redeem. Spotify’s U.S. card terms also list spotify.com/redeem; it may redirect to the account redemption page.
- Sign in to the Spotify account that should receive the benefit. If you have more than one account, double-check which one is open.
- Enter the code as shown on the card or offer. Spotify describes these as uppercase alphanumeric codes.
- Select Continue, then Redeem or confirm the offer if Spotify shows another confirmation step. Button labels and page layout may vary by market or account.
- Check your account’s plan or subscription details to confirm the result and, if you already pay for Premium, when the next payment is due.
Spotify’s gift-card instructions describe this website redemption flow. An offer that came with its own link may have different steps, so use the instructions supplied with that promotion.

Scan a Spotify Code graphic in the app
- Open the Spotify mobile app.
- Tap Search, then tap the camera icon in the upper-right corner.
- Point the camera at the Spotify Code and wait for Spotify to open its linked content.
Spotify Codes can point to items such as songs, albums, playlists, artist profiles, and branded pages, according to Spotify’s instructions. They are for sharing and discovering content—not for adding account credit or Premium time. If a scan fails, try brighter light, reduce glare, and hold the phone steady. You can also ask the sender for the Spotify link or search for the content yourself.

Check whether your account and card are eligible
- Country or region: Spotify says the account country or region must match the country where the gift card was purchased. Changing your account country is not a guaranteed way to make a foreign card work.
- Retail activation: A card bought in a shop may need to be activated by the cashier. Keep the receipt in case the retailer needs to check it.
- Plan type: Gift cards generally apply to full-price, standalone Premium Individual—not Student, Duo, Family, trial, or bundled offers. Rules can also vary by market and account type. Check the applicable support instructions and, in the U.S., the gift-card terms before trying to use a card with a different plan.
- Valid and unused code: A code must not be expired, previously redeemed, or damaged beyond recognition. Expiration terms differ by country and card type, so do not assume one worldwide deadline; check the terms for the market where it was bought.
- Stacking limit: Spotify support pages state that up to 18 months of Premium time can be stacked. If you are already at that limit, another card may not apply until time has been used.
- Local availability: Gift-card purchasing policies vary by country and can change. For example, Spotify’s Canada support page says previously purchased cards remain redeemable while new cards are not available for purchase there. Availability of new cards does not determine whether an older valid card can still be redeemed.
What happens after redemption?
An eligible code may start Premium immediately for someone upgrading from Free, or add time to an eligible existing subscription beginning on its next payment date. Check your account afterward rather than assuming the timing. When the redeemed benefit runs out, normal billing can resume if the subscription remains active; cancel or change the plan if you do not want that to happen.
A currency-value gift card is not a general Spotify wallet balance. Its value is applied under the relevant local terms toward eligible full-price standalone Premium months. The number of months depends on the card, country, current subscription price, and applicable terms—do not assume a particular denomination always buys a fixed number of months.

Spotify code not working? Troubleshoot in this order
- Make sure it is the right kind of code. A scannable Spotify Code graphic cannot be entered into the gift-card form. Scan it in the app; use the browser form for an alphanumeric redemption code.
- Check the account. Confirm you are signed into the account you want to use and check its plan or payment details. If the code may have been redeemed on another account, investigate that account before assuming the code is defective.
- Check the purchase country. The account region may not match where the card was bought.
- Confirm retail activation. If you bought the card in a store, ask the retailer to verify it was activated. Keep your receipt.
- Re-enter carefully. Check for missing characters, spaces, or hyphens, and look closely at characters that can be confused, such as zero and capital O, or capital I, lowercase L, and one. Spotify lists these examples in its gift-card troubleshooting guidance.
- Review plan eligibility and card terms. Discounted, group, trial, bundled, add-on, or other plans may not qualify. Expiration and other terms vary by market.
- Stop after repeated errors. Spotify’s UK troubleshooting page says an error can appear after four attempts and advises trying again after 24 hours. Avoid repeated guesses, especially if the card is damaged.
If the code still fails, contact Spotify through its support site or the retailer that sold it. Have the receipt and card available, but never post or send an unused code publicly. Spotify’s U.S. terms also warn that cards from unauthorized sellers, distributors, resellers, or auction sites may not be honored; buy only through a source you trust.
If the code is damaged, lost, or already used
Keep the physical card, packaging, and proof of purchase. If the printed code is unreadable or the retailer activation appears to have failed, the seller may need to help verify the purchase. If Spotify reports that the code has already been redeemed, check the account you intended to use and any other Spotify accounts you control, then ask Spotify Support to review the account-specific status. Do not share the full code in a public post or with an unofficial seller.
