If you deleted an App Store app, you can usually download it again without paying a second time: open App Store, tap your account photo or My Account, choose Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps, select Not on This iPhone when available, and tap the app’s redownload button.
Before reinstalling, search for the app. It may only have been removed from the Home Screen, hidden, or offloaded to save storage. The recovery process is primarily controlled by iOS, your Apple Account, the app’s availability, and device restrictions—not by whether you have an iPhone 17, iPhone 16, or another supported iPhone.
First, check whether the app was really deleted
| What happened | What you see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Removed from Home Screen | The app opens through Search or appears in App Library | Add it back to the Home Screen |
| Hidden Home Screen page | Several apps disappeared together | Unhide the page |
| Hidden app | The app is in App Library’s Hidden folder | Authenticate and unhide it |
| Hidden purchase | The app is missing from the usual App Store purchases list | Unhide it under Hidden Purchases, then redownload it |
| Offloaded app | The icon remains with a cloud symbol, or iPhone Storage identifies it as offloaded | Tap the icon or choose Reinstall App |
| Deleted app | It is absent from the device | Download it again from the App Store |
Search for the app first
- Swipe down from the middle of a Home Screen.
- Type the app’s name.
- Tap the result to open it.
If Search finds and opens the app, it is still installed. Apple says an app removed from the Home Screen remains in App Library. Swipe left past your Home Screen pages to open App Library, locate the app, touch and hold its icon, and choose the option to add it to the Home Screen. Search and available controls can vary slightly by iOS version. Apple’s guide to finding apps explains the current behavior.
Redownload a deleted iPhone app
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account photo or the My Account button in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Apps & Purchase History.
- Tap Your Apps.
- Choose Not on This iPhone if that filter appears. On some iOS versions or account configurations, the app may be listed directly under Your Apps.
- Find the app and tap the cloud-shaped Redownload button.
- Approve the download with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode if requested.
- Wait for installation, then open the app.
The exact labels can differ by iOS release, language, region, and account setup. The relevant route is the App Store account area, followed by your app purchases. See Apple’s redownload instructions and its iPhone purchase guide.

A previously downloaded free or paid app will normally show a redownload control rather than a price when you are signed in to the same Apple Account that obtained it. This does not guarantee access if the app has been removed from the App Store, is incompatible, or is unavailable in your country or region. Apple documents the redownload button and purchase behavior.
Unhide an installed app from App Library
iPhone’s app-hiding feature is different from hiding an App Store purchase. To unhide an app installed on the phone:
- Swipe left past all Home Screen pages to open App Library.
- Scroll to and tap the Hidden folder.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Touch and hold the app.
- Tap Don’t Require Face ID, Don’t Require Touch ID, or Don’t Require Passcode, depending on your iPhone.
- Authenticate again if prompted.
The app should become visible in App Library. It may not return automatically to its former Home Screen position. Apple says this feature applies to apps downloaded from the App Store; installed Apple apps cannot be hidden this way. Availability and some Family Sharing behavior can vary by country or region. See Apple’s instructions for hiding and unhiding apps.

Unhide an app from App Store purchases
If the app was hidden from your purchase list, make it visible before trying to download it:
- Open App Store and tap your account photo or My Account.
- Tap your name or Apple Account.
- Scroll to Hidden Purchases.
- Authenticate if asked.
- Find the app and tap Unhide.
- Return to your apps and tap the redownload control.
Unhiding does not reinstall the app or put it back on the Home Screen. It only makes the purchase eligible to appear for redownloading. Hiding a purchase also does not cancel related subscriptions or erase the complete purchase history shown in Settings. Apple explains hidden purchases here.
Reinstall an app that was offloaded
Offloading is often the best-case scenario. iPhone can remove an app’s storage while retaining its documents and data.

- Tap Reinstall App, or tap the app icon’s cloud symbol if it remains on the Home Screen.
Apple distinguishes offloading from deletion: offloading frees the space used by the app but keeps its documents and data, while deleting removes the app and related data. Reinstalling an offloaded app may therefore restore access to locally retained information, subject to how that app stores data. Read Apple’s explanation of offloading.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will reinstalling recover app data?
Not necessarily. Reinstalling restores the app itself, but data recovery depends on where the app stored your information:
- Account or iCloud sync: signing in again may restore documents, settings, messages, or progress.
- Local-only data: deleting the app may have removed it from the iPhone.
- App-specific backup: the developer may provide its own restore or backup process.
- Device backup: an iCloud or computer backup made before deletion may contain recoverable app data.
Do not assume that reinstalling will recover game progress, downloaded files, drafts, messages, or settings. Apple notes that App Store purchase information can be restored after an iCloud backup restore, while some third-party app data may need to be downloaded again from the app provider. Apple’s backup guidance provides more detail.

Restore eligible in-app purchases
- Reinstall and open the app.
- Sign in to the same account previously used in that app.
- Confirm that the iPhone uses the Apple Account that made the purchase.
- Look in the app’s store, settings, or menu for Restore Purchases.
Permanent, non-consumable purchases—such as a one-time Pro upgrade—may be restorable. Consumable purchases, such as spent game currency or hints, generally cannot be restored. If an eligible purchase still will not return, contact the app developer. Apple’s purchase-restoration guidance explains the distinction.
If the app does not appear in your purchases
Check these possibilities before buying it again:
- You are signed in to a different Apple Account. Check the account under Settings > [your name], then check other accounts you may have used for App Store purchases.
- The purchase is hidden. Check App Store > account photo > your name > Hidden Purchases.
- A family member originally obtained it. In App Store > account photo > Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps, choose the family member if that option is available.
- The app came from a school, employer, enterprise deployment, or another distribution method rather than your App Store purchases.
- The app is not compatible with the current iOS version or iPhone.
For Family Sharing, redownloading works only while the purchase is eligible for sharing. If the purchaser leaves the group or stops sharing purchases, that route may disappear. Apple’s troubleshooting guide covers account, compatibility, hidden-purchase, and Family Sharing issues.
If the app is no longer in the App Store
An app may be unavailable because the developer removed it, Apple removed it from sale, it is no longer compatible, it is unavailable in your region, the purchase was refunded, or Family Sharing access ended. A purchase record proves an item was associated with an Apple Account; it does not guarantee that Apple still distributes it.

If the app cannot be redownloaded and no usable backup contains the required data, there may be no supported way to restore the app. Changing regions or using unofficial recovery utilities is not a dependable solution. Third-party “iPhone recovery” software cannot recreate an app that Apple no longer distributes and cannot guarantee recovery of deleted app data.
Use an iCloud or computer backup only as a last resort
A full backup restore is not the normal way to reinstall one deleted app. Consider it only if the app held irreplaceable local data, a usable backup predates deletion, or the app is no longer downloadable but was present in that backup. Restoring can overwrite or remove newer content created after the backup.
Restore from an iCloud backup
- Back up or otherwise preserve newer content first.
- If the iPhone is already set up, erase it. Apple requires the device to be at the setup stage for this process.
- During setup, reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Tap From iCloud Backup.
- Sign in and choose a backup by date and size.
- Enter passwords for additional Apple Accounts used to obtain content when requested.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while apps and other content continue restoring.
See Apple’s iCloud restore instructions before erasing the phone.
Restore from a computer backup
Connect a new or erased iPhone to the computer containing the backup. Use Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, or iTunes on older macOS and Windows, then select the relevant backup. Encrypted backups require the backup password. Apple’s computer-backup restoration guide lists the available options.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Search for the app from the Home Screen.
- Check App Library and its Hidden folder.
- Look for a cloud symbol indicating offloading or an incomplete installation.
- Open App Store > account photo > Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps.
- Check Hidden Purchases.
- Confirm the correct Apple Account.
- Check a family member’s purchases if Family Sharing was involved.
- Verify compatibility, region availability, and an active internet connection.
- Restart the iPhone and try again.
- Check Apple service availability if the App Store is having an outage.
- Contact Apple Support or the developer if the item is listed but remains unavailable.
If you cannot delete an app
That is a restriction problem, not an app-recovery problem. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps. Also check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. A school- or employer-managed iPhone may require its IT administrator to remove the restriction. Apple’s deletion troubleshooting steps cover these controls.
