If you accidentally uninstalled a Windows 11 program, the easiest fix is usually to reinstall it—not to try to undelete the entire installation. Use Microsoft Store for Store apps, or download desktop software from its publisher. Use System Restore only if you need to return Windows to an earlier state and a suitable restore point exists; it can reverse other changes as well as the uninstall.
The program, its settings, license, and personal data are separate things. Reinstalling may restore the app but not its old configuration or files.
Choose the right recovery method

Before treating the app as uninstalled, search for it in Start and in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. It may still be installed but missing from Start, failing to launch, or unavailable to the Windows account you are using.

Reinstall a Microsoft Store app
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Search for the app and open its listing.
- Select Get, Install, or the relevant purchase/download control. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the app if prompted.
Microsoft Store apps can be unavailable if the publisher removed the listing or if your region, account, or device does not meet its requirements. Check Microsoft’s Store app installation guidance if you cannot find or install it.

If Microsoft Store itself is not behaving correctly, reset its cache:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen, then search again.
Reinstall a desktop program
Get the installer from the software publisher’s official website, the publisher’s account or license portal, or your organization’s approved software repository. You can also check Downloads, Documents, a USB drive, or a known-good backup for an installer you already saved. Avoid unfamiliar download sites: installers may be altered or bundled with unwanted software.
After installation, the program may ask you to sign in or enter a product key again. You might also need to reinstall plugins, reconnect cloud storage, restore settings, or reconfigure file associations. Check the publisher’s account portal if you cannot find your license.

Use System Restore when an earlier Windows state is needed
Microsoft describes System Restore as a recovery option for reversing system changes. It may restore application-related system state, but it is not a targeted “undelete this app” button. It only helps if a suitable restore point from before the uninstall exists, and the result can vary by app.
To check for a restore point and review the impact:
- Save open work. Back up important files before starting.
- Open Start, search for Control Panel, and open it.
- Search Control Panel for Recovery, then open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore, then Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the uninstall. If offered, select Show more restore points.
- Select Scan for affected programs when available. Review which applications and drivers may be restored or removed.
- If the consequences are acceptable, select Next, then Finish. Allow Windows to restart and complete the recovery.
If Windows Recovery Environment requests a BitLocker recovery key, you will need that key to continue. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance explains recovery options and access.
A restore point may not exist: Windows does not guarantee one for every uninstall, and older points can be removed as disk space is reclaimed. Traditional System Restore is generally aimed at system files and settings, not personal files, but do not treat it as a substitute for a backup. Changes made after the point—such as programs, drivers, updates, and settings—may be affected. If there is no appropriate point, reinstalling the app is usually the practical route.

Windows 11 also has a separate point-in-time restore capability on eligible configurations. It can roll back a broader system state, including apps, settings, and files, so later changes may be lost. Availability and defaults depend on Windows version, edition, device management, and system conditions; do not assume this option is present on every PC.
If the installer or app data is missing
First check Downloads, backups, File History, OneDrive, another synced service, another PC, or your organization’s deployment repository. If a specific old version or license is needed, contact the publisher.
If files were deleted rather than removed by a normal uninstall, file-recovery software may be able to retrieve some of them, but it cannot promise a complete installation. Windows may still be missing the app’s registration, services, drivers, permissions, dependencies, or license. If you try recovery, minimize writes to the affected drive and save recovered files to a different drive. This is a precaution, not a guarantee—especially if data has been overwritten or storage has reclaimed it. Consider recovery tools only when files or installers are actually missing; they are not needed to reinstall an app you can download again.
If the app will not install, uninstall, or launch
- Restart Windows and try again. A pending restart can block some installations.
- For an installed app with repair controls: go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app, open Advanced options if available, then choose Repair. If that fails, Reset may be available. Reset can erase the app’s data and settings, so back them up first.
- For a desktop installer or removal problem: use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for programs that cannot be installed or removed. The relevant steps depend on the problem and app.
- If it appears installed but will not launch: check the publisher’s compatibility and support guidance, required runtimes, drivers, services, and license status. A failed launch does not necessarily mean the app was uninstalled.
- If the app was installed for another Windows account: check that account, Installed apps, Start, and the original installation path before reinstalling. Some programs are installed per user; others are available to all users.
Do not reset Windows just to restore one app
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows; it is not a targeted program recovery feature. The Keep my files option preserves personal files but removes apps and settings, so it generally will not solve a single missing-app problem. Remove everything also removes personal files. Reserve Reset or reinstalling Windows from installation media for broader Windows problems, and review the available keep options carefully before proceeding.

Prevent the same problem next time
- Keep important installers and license details in a backed-up location.
- Back up project files, game saves, and application data with an appropriate cloud or local backup.
- Before major software or driver changes, make sure a suitable restore point or other recovery plan exists.
- Record essential app versions and configuration details, especially for work software that depends on plugins or specific versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are uninstalled programs in the Recycle Bin?
Usually not. Conventional uninstallers generally remove program files directly rather than moving the complete installation to the Recycle Bin.
Can I recover an app without a restore point?
Usually, yes: reinstall it from Microsoft Store or the publisher’s official installer. A restore point is only needed to attempt a rollback of Windows to an earlier state.
Does uninstalling a program delete my documents?
It depends on the app and its uninstaller. Check Documents and the app’s data folders or backups; do not assume that uninstalling either preserves or deletes all personal data.
Will System Restore bring back every uninstalled program?
No. It requires a suitable earlier restore point and can affect other system changes. Scan for affected programs before confirming, and be prepared to reinstall the app if it is not restored.

What if Microsoft Store no longer lists the app?
Check the publisher’s official site or account portal, and confirm region, account, and device compatibility. If the publisher has withdrawn the app, Store reinstall may not be available.
Should I use a data-recovery tool to restore a program?
Only if the installer or important files were deleted and are not available from a backup or official download. Recovered files do not guarantee a complete or licensed installation.
Does Reset this PC restore an uninstalled program?
No. Reset reinstalls Windows and removes apps; even Keep my files removes applications and settings.
