Use a vehicle tracker to give law enforcement a lead—not to recover the car yourself. If your car is missing, report the theft promptly, share the tracker’s location and timestamps with police, activate the provider’s official recovery process, and notify your insurer. Do not chase, confront, block, or enter the vehicle.
1. Get somewhere safe
If the theft involved force, a carjacking, an active threat, or a vehicle currently being driven dangerously, call 911 and move to safety. If you discovered the car missing later and there is no immediate danger, contact local law enforcement through its non-emergency number or online reporting process, where available. The FBI advises reporting promptly; a tracker does not replace a police report.
If a tracker shows a moving vehicle, a private residence, or a possible crime scene, give that information to police. Do not follow the vehicle or approach the location.

Make a brief check for common mix-ups: a family member or employee may have moved it; it may have been towed, repossessed, left with a repair shop or valet, or parked in another lot. Also make sure the tracker account is showing the correct vehicle and that its map pin is not simply an old location. Do not let this check delay a genuine theft report.

3. File a stolen-vehicle report
Call the appropriate local or state law-enforcement agency and state clearly that the vehicle is stolen. Tell the dispatcher or officer that it has a tracker, even if the device is offline. Ask for the incident or report number, the best way to send location evidence, and how to provide updates if the tracker position changes. If the vehicle is currently moving, report that fact immediately and follow the agency’s instructions.
Have as much of this information ready as possible:
- VIN, license plate number and state, make, model, year, trim, and color.
- Distinctive marks, decals, damage, wheels, modifications, and recent photos.
- Approximate time and place last seen, and the number of keys in your possession or whether a key may have been inside.
- Registration and insurance details, plus whether the vehicle is financed or leased.
- Tracker brand and type, device ID or serial number, account email, provider contact details, and whether you control the account.
- Last known tracker location and its timestamp; note whether the report is live, delayed, or a last-known position.
- Whether medication, important documents, weapons, child seats, or other sensitive property was inside.
These details align with NICB’s stolen-vehicle reporting guidance, which identifies the vehicle’s make and model, color, plate, and VIN as core information and advises owners to tell police about GPS equipment. Be accurate about keys and other facts; do not conceal information from police or your insurer.
4. Give police useful tracker evidence
Once you have reported the theft, open the tracker app or portal and verify the vehicle and device. Record the time of the latest update and capture screenshots showing the map, device name, timestamp, battery status, movement or speed if shown, and route history or geofence alerts. Preserve the original app information and avoid editing the screenshots. If multiple devices report different places, label each provider and device and give police each timestamp and confidence level.
You can say: “My vehicle is stolen, and I have an active [tracker or service name]. It shows [location] as of [time]. I will not approach it. What is the safest way to send you the live location and screenshots?” Ask whether the provider should contact the department directly, how to send a live link or screenshots, whether the investigator wants you to call back when the location changes, and what to do if the vehicle is recovered.
A map pin is not necessarily the car’s exact position. Depending on the device and conditions, it may be delayed or approximate, or show a nearby building, road segment, parking structure, or last successful transmission. Share the time and the app’s wording along with the pin; do not present an old location as current.
5. Activate the right recovery service
GM vehicles with eligible OnStar service
After filing the police report, tell police the vehicle has OnStar, then call OnStar at 1-888-466-7827 and provide the report details. Follow the Advisor’s instructions and let OnStar coordinate with law enforcement. OnStar says its Advisors can use GPS to help authorities locate a confirmed stolen vehicle and may remotely slow it when appropriate; Remote Ignition Block is also described for eligible situations. These are not unrestricted owner-controlled tracking or shutdown buttons. Availability depends on vehicle equipment, model year, enrollment, active service, and circumstances. Do not assume every GM vehicle or OnStar plan includes every recovery feature. OnStar says Theft Alarm Notification is available on most 2014-and-newer vehicles only when required factory equipment, active service, and enrollment conditions are met. That alert does not automatically notify police: contact law enforcement and follow the OnStar theft procedure.
LoJack
For current LoJack recovery products, the published process is to use the LoJack app to connect with law enforcement and file a police report, then contact LoJack’s concierge service through the app with the report information. LoJack says it then activates its recovery process using GPS and cellular technology. Follow the current instructions for your particular product on the LoJack recovery page.
Check which LoJack system you have. LoJack says its legacy RF system was discontinued effective March 26, 2026, with no new RF activations after that date, as described in its legacy-system notice. Do not assume older RF hardware works like a current GPS/cellular product or that its service can still be activated. Current connected-car products, LoJack LE, legacy hardware, and dealer-installed systems may have different features and procedures. LoJack’s nationwide coverage and possible reimbursement of up to $10,000 if a vehicle is not recovered within 30 days are product- and state-dependent claims; check the actual terms and eligibility rather than treating them as guarantees.
Aftermarket GPS tracker
Use the maker’s app or web portal to confirm the correct vehicle and device serial number, then record the last successful location, time, route, and available battery or movement data. Send it to police in the format the department requests. If the provider offers a stolen-vehicle desk or law-enforcement liaison, contact it after reporting the theft and ask whether it can provide location records directly. Keep documenting updates; do not use them to pursue the vehicle.

An OBD-II unit is easy to install but can be visible, unplugged, or lose power when removed. A hardwired unit may be more discreet, but installation quality matters: improper wiring can cause electrical problems or drain the battery. A battery-powered tracker needs charging or battery replacement. Factory telematics can integrate with the vehicle but is limited by supported equipment and active service. For example, Bouncie says its device works on most 1996-and-newer vehicles and requires a subscription for each device; it also notes that an unplugged or damaged adapter and lost or intermittent wireless service can stop transmissions.
AirTag or another Bluetooth item tracker
An AirTag can sometimes provide a useful lead, but it is a backup item-finding device, not continuous vehicle GPS. It sends a Bluetooth signal that nearby Apple devices in the Find My network can relay; the owner sees the relayed location in Find My. It may not update when few compatible devices are nearby, and the point can be delayed or approximate. A person carrying the vehicle may also receive an unknown-item alert or hear the tag, because Apple’s unwanted-tracking protections are deliberate safety features. The tag can be removed, disabled, discarded, or separated from the car.
Apple describes AirTag’s Find My features, anti-tracking alerts, and replaceable CR2032 battery (rated for more than a year under Apple’s stated conditions). Treat any location it provides as information for police—not permission to trespass or confront anyone. Do not rely on an AirTag as a substitute for a dedicated cellular GPS/recovery service.

Do not attempt a personal recovery
Do not drive to the location alone, follow or block the car, enter a lot, garage, home, or other property, confront anyone, or publicly post the live location or accuse a named person. Do not try to remotely disable the engine unless the manufacturer and law enforcement expressly direct you to do so.
Do give police the location, timestamp, direction of travel, and how confident the app appears to be; preserve screenshots; keep your phone available; and follow the investigating agency’s instructions. A tracker identifies a possible lead. Police decide how and whether to act, based on safety, evidence, and applicable law.
6. Notify your insurer and any lender or lessor
Contact your insurer promptly and provide the police report number and tracker details. Ask what documents it needs, whether your policy includes rental reimbursement, and how to handle towing or inspection if the vehicle is found. Comprehensive coverage generally addresses theft, but coverage and claim requirements depend on the individual policy. If the vehicle is financed or leased, notify the lender or lessor as required; it may have an insurable interest. NICB notes that insurers often need a police report and may need time to determine whether a car was recovered, damaged, or is a total loss (NICB reporting guidance).
Leaving keys in the vehicle does not automatically void every policy. The outcome depends on the policy, facts, jurisdiction, and insurer’s investigation. Ask the insurer how the policy treats it and be truthful about what happened.
If the tracker goes offline
Tell police the last known location and exact update time; do not claim the car remains there. Preserve route history and earlier screenshots. An offline device can mean it was unplugged or removed, the vehicle or tracker battery lost power, the car entered a garage or underground structure, GPS or cellular reception is poor, the device is damaged, the account is suspended, the app is showing stale data, or the tracker is paired to a different vehicle. Signal-blocking enclosures are another possibility, but an offline status alone cannot tell you why transmission stopped.
Check the app for battery and connection status, confirm the correct account and vehicle, and ask the provider whether it received a later transmission. Do not delay police updates while troubleshooting. A last known position, timestamp, route, and device identifier can still be useful.

If you see the car before police arrive, do not enter or move it. Photograph it from a safe distance, call police to report the apparent recovery, and ask whether officers need to inspect it where it is. Do not clean it or disturb possible evidence until police advise you.

After police release it, document damage, missing property, broken glass, forced-entry marks, wiring changes, and signs of tampering. Ask whether it must be towed or impounded, notify the insurer, and check whether the insurer wants an approved shop to inspect it. A qualified shop should assess mechanical and safety systems and scan for altered ignition components or unfamiliar devices. Replace compromised keys or fobs, garage remotes, access codes, and connected-account passwords. Keep the police report, photographs, invoices, and receipts, and ask the insurer about rental reimbursement. A recovered car is not necessarily safe or undamaged.
Choosing a tracker before a theft
No tracker guarantees recovery. Choose by how it communicates, how it gets power, who can act on its data, and what happens when it loses signal:

For an eligible GM vehicle, first check the exact OnStar plan and recovery features. For a dedicated recovery service, verify the precise LoJack hardware, coverage, service, and any guarantee terms—particularly if you own a legacy system. For a simple DIY OBD-II device, understand unplugging and subscription risks. Consider a Bluetooth tag only as a supplementary layer. Fleet and equipment owners should compare account administration, coverage, reporting, geofencing, power, and total service costs across fleet-oriented systems.
Before buying, confirm device and installation cost, recurring fees, network coverage, power and battery needs, cancellation and replacement terms, warranty, and whether law-enforcement assistance is actually included. Do not assume a product’s advertised recovery statistic predicts an individual outcome. A tracker can improve the information available to responders, but its accuracy and usefulness depend on device type, signal, update time, and whether it remains connected. Tracking a vehicle or person without proper ownership, authority, or consent can raise legal and safety problems; use devices only for legitimate, authorized purposes.

Can I track a stolen car without a police report?
You may be able to view a tracker app, but report the theft promptly and involve police before trying to arrange recovery. OnStar and LoJack describe police-report involvement in their stolen-vehicle processes; follow the procedure for your specific service.
Can I remotely shut off a stolen car?
Do not attempt it yourself unless the manufacturer and law enforcement expressly direct you to. Some services describe conditional assistance such as remote slowdown or ignition blocking, but eligibility and control depend on the vehicle, service, and circumstances.
Does leaving keys in the car automatically invalidate a theft claim?
No universal answer applies. The policy, facts, jurisdiction, and insurer’s investigation control. Tell the insurer accurately what happened and ask how your policy applies.
Can I put an AirTag in my car?
