VLC can record your Windows 11 desktop, but the saved-video workflow is not a one-click screen-recorder button: choose Media → Open Capture Device → Desktop, then use Convert to select an output profile and file. Start the capture, stop it when finished, and check the saved video. VLC works for basic desktop video; its standard desktop-capture instructions do not provide a simple way to mix system audio and microphone sound.
Before you start
- Use VLC Desktop from VideoLAN’s official Windows download page. The page currently lists VLC 3.0.23 and Windows installer packages; menu labels or available profiles can differ in older builds.
- Make sure the folder where you plan to save the video has enough free space and that your Windows account can write to it. File size varies with duration, resolution, frame rate, codec, and what is happening on screen.
- Choose a frame rate. For a typical tutorial, start at 25 or 30 frames per second (fps). A mostly static demonstration may be fine at 15 fps, which can reduce processing demands and file size. Higher rates can increase both, and usually add little for ordinary office-app recording.
- Close unrelated windows and hide passwords, private messages, notifications, and confidential information. Ask permission before recording meetings, classes, calls, or copyrighted material where required; recording does not grant permission to redistribute it.
- If you need sound, decide what kind before you begin. VLC’s documented desktop-capture steps do not offer a straightforward system-audio and microphone mixing option.
Record the Windows 11 desktop with VLC
- Open the capture dialog. In VLC, select Media → Open Capture Device. The documented Windows shortcut is Ctrl+C.
- Choose Desktop capture. Set Capture mode to Desktop. Do not choose DirectShow for the screen; that mode is used for Windows capture devices such as webcams and microphones.
- Set the frame rate. Enter your preferred rate in the frame-rate field. Try 25 or 30 fps for normal desktop movement; reduce it if the computer struggles. A high monitor refresh rate does not guarantee VLC will capture and encode every frame smoothly.
- Choose Convert, not just Play. Click the arrow beside Play and select Convert (VLC also documents Alt+O). Play alone previews the desktop source; Convert opens the saved-output setup.
- Select an output profile. Choose a profile appropriate for the file you want. If broad compatibility is important, choose an MP4-compatible profile where available. Profile names vary, so check that the selected profile’s container matches the extension you intend to use. If unsure, make and test a short clip before recording anything long.
- Set the destination. Click Browse, choose a folder you can write to, and enter a filename with the appropriate extension. For example, use a folder such as
VideosVLC Recordingsand a descriptive name such assettings-tutorial.mp4—but only use.mp4if it matches the selected container. Confirm the final path in the Convert dialog. Avoid protected system folders. - Start the recording. Click Start. VLC begins capturing the desktop and writing the converted stream to the destination you chose. Minimize or move VLC if its window would otherwise appear in the recording.
- Stop and check the file. When finished, click VLC’s Stop button. Open File Explorer, go to the destination folder, and confirm the file exists and is not empty. Play it in VLC or another media player and check that the beginning and end are intact.
VLC’s official desktop-recording instructions describe this capture-mode, Convert, profile, destination, Start, and Stop workflow. Test the complete path—including playback—before relying on it for a long session.
Does VLC record system audio or microphone sound?
Do not assume that a Desktop capture includes sound. The official desktop-recording procedure does not document a simple control for mixing Windows playback audio and microphone input into the screen recording. VLC’s separate audio-recording instructions cover microphone capture through DirectShow, where you select an audio device; that is a separate workflow, not proof that the basic desktop conversion captures or synchronizes that audio with the screen.
If narration, system sound, or both are essential, make a short test and verify the result before recording the full session. For dependable mixed audio, separate tracks, webcam video, monitoring, or pause-and-resume controls, use a recorder designed for those tasks—such as OBS—rather than relying on an undocumented VLC workaround.

Where the recording is saved
For desktop capture, the destination is the file path you choose with Browse in the Convert dialog. VLC saves the output there when you stop the capture.
This is different from VLC’s ordinary Record button, which is primarily for recording content already playing in VLC. That button saves to the default video or music folder with a name resembling vlc-record-Date-Time-Channel-Track.extension. You can expose it through View → Advanced Controls or add it through Tools → Customize Interface. VLC documents changing that ordinary-recording folder at Tools → Preferences → Input/Codecs → Files → Browse; changing it does not replace choosing a destination in the desktop Convert dialog. Optional: record from the command line
Advanced users can use VLC’s documented screen:// capture source. This example captures at 25 fps and writes an MKV file named output.mkv in the current location:

VLC’s screen-recording command-line documentation says the capture begins when VLC opens and ends when you click Stop. Windows quoting and backslash handling can vary between Command Prompt, PowerShell, and shortcuts. The GUI workflow is the safer starting point for most people.
Troubleshooting
“Desktop” is missing
Check that you opened Media → Open Capture Device in the Windows desktop version of VLC and that the capture-mode menu is open. If it is still absent, update or reinstall from VideoLAN’s official Windows page. A mobile or non-desktop build, an outdated installation, or instructions for another operating system may explain the difference.
The video is black or frozen
- Confirm Capture mode is Desktop.
- Make sure you selected Convert, then clicked Start, rather than only previewing with Play.
- Try a short test at a lower frame rate and update VLC from VideoLAN.
- Protected video surfaces may appear black. Do not try to bypass DRM or other content protections.
There is no single documented preference that fixes every black capture; behavior can depend on the VLC build, Windows configuration, and graphics setup.

The recording is choppy
Lower the frame rate, close resource-heavy apps, or use a less demanding output profile. If acceptable, record at a lower display resolution. VLC is not a strong choice for high-motion gameplay capture. A high display refresh setting alone does not make VLC encode the recording smoothly.

The file is empty, tiny, or will not play
Confirm you clicked Start after setting up Convert, the destination path is valid, VLC can write to it, and you did not stop immediately. Check free disk space. If a file exists but will not play, open it in VLC and another player; then repeat a short test with a broadly compatible profile and a matching extension. A crash or force-closing VLC during recording can leave an incomplete file or prevent the container from being finalized. Use Stop normally rather than ending VLC in Task Manager.
The file is not in the expected folder
Recheck the path shown in the Convert dialog; that is the desktop recording’s destination. The default-folder preference for VLC’s ordinary Record button applies to a different workflow.

No microphone or system audio
The standard Desktop capture workflow does not establish that either source is being recorded. VLC documents microphone capture separately using DirectShow. If you need screen video with reliably mixed sound, choose a tool with explicit audio-source controls.
The cursor or intended monitor is missing
VLC’s basic desktop-recording documentation does not specify a cursor-visibility control or explain reliable individual-monitor selection. Multi-monitor results may depend on VLC’s version, Windows display arrangement, and capture implementation. Test the exact setup with a short clip; use another recorder if cursor visibility or a specific monitor is essential.

VLC is reasonable when it is already installed, you want a free solution, and a basic desktop video is enough. It is less suitable when you need polished production controls, selected-region capture with minimal setup, synchronized audio sources, a webcam overlay, scene switching, or editing.
- Snipping Tool: Microsoft describes it as a built-in Windows option for recording a selected part of the screen—useful for quick region-based clips.
- Xbox Game Bar: Open it with Windows logo key + G. It is geared more toward supported apps and games than production-style desktop capture.
- Clipchamp: Microsoft lists it as a screen-recording and editing option if recording plus editing is the goal.
- OBS Studio: A free, open-source choice when you want control over screen, webcam, microphone, system audio, scenes, or streaming. It takes more setup than VLC.
