To record your Linux desktop, use GNOME’s built-in shortcut recorder for a quick clip, OBS Studio for selecting a window and managing audio or scenes, or FFmpeg’s x11grab input for scripted captures on X11. On Wayland, use a recorder with PipeWire capture, such as OBS’s PipeWire source; FFmpeg’s documented x11grab route is for X11.

Choose a recording method for your Linux session

First decide what you need to capture: the whole display, one application window or a defined region. Then check whether your desktop session is X11 or Wayland. That choice matters because the capture mechanisms differ: FFmpeg documents x11grab for X11, while OBS’s PipeWire screen-capture source requires Wayland. GNOME also provides a built-in shortcut recorder for a quick desktop clip.

Need Good starting point Session and trade-offs
Quick desktop recording without configuring a production setup GNOME built-in screen recorder GNOME desktop; recordings are saved as WebM, according to Red Hat’s documentation.
Choose a window, combine sources, manage audio or stream OBS Studio Use Window Capture for one window; choose PipeWire capture on Wayland or XSHM for the Linux X11-oriented source.
Repeatable command-line recording or scripted region capture FFmpeg with x11grab X11 route; specify the display, frame rate, and capture dimensions.

These approaches record the Linux desktop itself. A screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo serves a different task: capturing a webpage as an image or PDF, not recording your desktop as video.

Record a quick clip with GNOME

GNOME treats screen recording as a built-in system feature invoked with a shortcut. Red Hat describes GNOME Screen Recording as allowing users to record the desktop or specific application activity, with recordings saved as WebM. This is a convenient path for a short bug report or tutorial snippet when you do not need scene switching, streaming controls or a detailed audio mix.

  1. Use GNOME as your desktop environment and invoke its screen-recording shortcut. The cited GNOME and Red Hat documentation identifies the shortcut-based feature but does not specify a universal key combination, so check the shortcut configured in your GNOME installation if the default does not start recording.
  2. Record the activity you want to show, then stop the recording using the recorder’s shortcut or desktop control.
  3. Locate and play the resulting WebM file. If you need another format or editing, convert or process it with a video tool such as FFmpeg.

GNOME’s built-in route is useful when a straightforward desktop recording is enough. If you need guaranteed window selection, explicit capture configuration, multiple audio sources or a repeatable script, use OBS or FFmpeg as appropriate to your session.

Record a window or manage production in OBS Studio

OBS is the stronger choice when a recording needs a specific application window, multiple sources, audio controls, scenes or streaming. Its documentation distinguishes Linux Screen Capture (XSHM), intended for Linux X11 capture, from Linux Screen Capture (PipeWire), which requires Wayland. OBS also documents Window Capture as a way to capture a specific window and its contents.

Choose the source for X11 or Wayland

  • Wayland: choose OBS’s PipeWire screen-capture source. PipeWire capture requires Wayland according to OBS’s documentation.
  • X11: use the XSHM screen-capture source for display capture, or use FFmpeg’s x11grab route if a command-line recording is preferable.
  • One application window: add or select OBS Window Capture and choose the target application. A window source avoids recording unrelated areas of the display, subject to what the application and session make available.

Basic OBS workflow

  1. Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the recording.
  2. Add the relevant source: a PipeWire screen capture on Wayland, an XSHM capture on X11, or Window Capture for a selected application.
  3. Configure the audio sources you need, such as a microphone, and confirm the correct source is active in OBS’s audio mixer.
  4. Check the preview to ensure the correct display or window is visible and that private or unrelated content is not in frame.
  5. Start recording, perform the on-screen task, then stop the recording and inspect the saved file.

OBS offers more control than a shortcut recorder, but it requires source and audio setup. For a one-off clip, that setup can be unnecessary; for repeatable tutorials, mixed audio, scenes or streaming, it is often worth configuring the scene once and reusing it.

ffmpeg -f x11grab -framerate 30 -video_size 1280x720 -i :0.0 output.mp4

The display name and dimensions are examples, not a guarantee that every desktop uses the same display identifier or has a screen area of that size. Set the capture dimensions to a region available on your system. FFmpeg’s documented syntax also supports an offset such as :0.0+100,200 to select a region beginning 100 pixels from the left and 200 pixels from the top of the display.

Record a positioned region

For example, to capture a 1280-by-720 area starting at that offset:

ffmpeg -f x11grab -framerate 30 -video_size 1280x720 -i :0.0+100,200 output.mp4

Change the offset and dimensions to fit the area you intend to record. If the resulting frame is blank or the command cannot connect, confirm that the session is X11 and that the display identifier is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the options mean

  • -f x11grab selects FFmpeg’s X11 video input device.
  • -framerate 30 requests 30 frames per second for the capture.
  • -video_size 1280x720 sets the input region’s width and height.
  • -i :0.0 identifies the X11 display; an appended +x,y sets the region offset.
  • output.mp4 is the output filename; FFmpeg infers output handling from the extension and available codecs.

This example captures video only. The cited X11 input instructions do not establish a microphone or system-audio capture setup, so do not assume audio is included. For audio mixing or a graphical selection workflow, configure OBS instead. FFmpeg can read live capture devices, apply filters and transcode to many formats, but the exact encoders available depend on the FFmpeg build installed on your system.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is a webpage screenshot rather than Linux desktop video, a screenshot API avoids configuring a browser capture script. One GET request returns an image or PDF; this example saves a webpage capture as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Troubleshoot common recording problems

FFmpeg reports a display or input error

The x11grab example is for X11, not a general Wayland capture command. Check your desktop session; on Wayland, switch to OBS’s PipeWire capture source. On X11, verify that the display value such as :0.0 matches the display available to the process running FFmpeg.

The capture is blank or the wrong area

Check the input dimensions and any +x,y offset. The requested rectangle must correspond to the intended portion of the display. In OBS, inspect the selected source and preview: a window capture and a whole-display capture are different sources, and the wrong one can record the wrong content.

OBS cannot capture on Wayland

Confirm that the session is Wayland and select the PipeWire screen-capture source rather than the XSHM source. OBS documents PipeWire capture as requiring Wayland; XSHM is the Linux X11-oriented source.

The file has no sound

The FFmpeg command above specifies only an X11 video input. For microphone or system audio, configure the corresponding source in OBS and check the audio mixer before recording. Audio-device setup can vary by Linux installation, and the cited capture references do not define one universal audio command.

The clip is too large or in an inconvenient format

GNOME saves its built-in recordings as WebM. FFmpeg can transcode video to many output formats, but the result depends on the encoders available in the installed build. Choose an output format supported by your playback or editing workflow, and verify the converted file before deleting the original.

Performance, reliability and cost

The cited documentation does not establish a universal frame-rate ceiling, CPU requirement, file-size estimate or performance benchmark for these methods. Actual results depend on the desktop, captured content, resolution, frame rate, encoder and hardware. A larger capture region or higher requested frame rate may increase processing and storage demands; test the intended settings with a short sample before an important recording.

GNOME’s shortcut recorder minimizes setup for simple clips. OBS adds control but requires a source and, when needed, audio configuration. FFmpeg makes X11 captures reproducible in scripts, with explicit frame rate, size and offset, but it requires correct session and display details. These desktop recording methods are software features; dedicated capture hardware is not a substitute for recording the Linux desktop itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the GNOME built-in recorder save MP4?
