To receive an embedded editor event on your server, the editor provider must offer a server-side webhook or API for that event. Configure it to send requests to a backend endpoint you control, then validate and process the provider’s documented payload. A JavaScript callback, DOM event, or iframe message happens in the browser; it does not reach your server unless your application explicitly forwards it.

There is no universal embedded-editor event format. The exact event names, setup steps, authentication, and delivery behavior depend on the editor and the event you need to observe.

First determine where the event exists

“An event from the embedded editor” can describe two different things:

  • A server-side webhook: the editor provider sends an HTTP request to your backend after a documented action. This is the right starting point for server-side synchronization or notifications.
  • A browser-side event: the embedded page or host page receives a JavaScript callback, DOM event, or iframe message. This is useful for updating the interface immediately, but it is not provider-to-server delivery.

Before writing a receiver, identify the editor, the precise action (such as a successful save), and the documentation for that event. The presence of an embedded JavaScript callback does not prove that the provider exposes an equivalent webhook.

Choose the event path that fits the job

Question Webhook or server API Browser callback, DOM event, or iframe message
Where is it delivered? To a configured server endpoint, when the provider supports that event. To code running in the embedded page or host page.
Typical use Backend synchronization, notifications, or other server processing documented by the provider. Immediate UI changes and coordination within the page.
What must you implement? A vendor-specific HTTP receiver, payload handling, and the vendor’s documented authenticity checks. The vendor’s JavaScript or messaging interface; forwarding is additional application code.
What must you verify? Event availability, signature scheme, timestamps, retries, ordering, and delivery semantics for that provider. Callback semantics and, for cross-origin messages, the documented origin-validation requirements.

Do not treat a browser event as a secure server notification. If you forward one from the browser, your backend is receiving a client-originated request, not independent confirmation from the editor provider. Design authorization and verification accordingly.

Set up a provider webhook safely

  1. Find the event in the provider’s server-side documentation. Confirm that the exact action you care about is available as a webhook or API event, and note the documented payload version and conditions under which it fires.
  2. Create a reachable backend endpoint. Use the provider’s prescribed integration settings or webhook-creation flow, and configure the public HTTPS URL your service can receive. For Templated, the documented location is Embed Setup under Advanced Settings.
  3. Implement the provider’s request contract. Parse its envelope and event-specific fields; retain the identifiers and metadata needed to associate the event with the correct account, document, template, or user.
  4. Authenticate before taking action. Apply the provider’s specified signature, timestamp, or other verification method to the received request. Follow its implementation guide exactly; do not guess a header name, signing algorithm, or secret format.
  5. Make processing resilient to asynchronous delivery. Queue work when appropriate, make handlers safe to run more than once where delivery behavior warrants it, and do not assume events arrive in chronological order unless the provider documents that guarantee.
  6. Test the real event and failure cases. Use the provider’s event definitions and payload examples. Verify what happens for invalid authentication, an unknown event, a duplicate, delayed arrival, and a handler failure.

These are implementation steps, not a common wire protocol: the endpoint method, JSON fields, authentication headers, acknowledgement requirements, retry policy, and ordering guarantees remain provider-specific.

Examples from editor documentation

Templated: action webhooks

Templated documents webhook events for create, save, and download. Example payloads include action, templateId, and metadata. Its setup instructions place the URL in Embed Setup’s Advanced Settings. These details describe Templated’s documented interface only; they do not establish signature, retry, or ordering guarantees for it. Templated documentation.

CKEditor Cloud Services: signed, asynchronous webhooks

CKEditor Cloud Services documents HTTP POST events with an event, environment_id, sent_at, and event-specific payload. Its documentation says requests carry a signature and timestamp that can be checked, and warns that webhook events are asynchronous and should not be assumed to arrive in order. It describes collaboration and comment events. Use CKEditor’s specific signature guide rather than applying an assumed generic scheme. Adobe Universal Editor: DOM events

Adobe Universal Editor documents aue: content and UI DOM events on affected elements that bubble to BODY. Their payloads include request and response data, and the events are triggered after the corresponding call succeeds. This is a remote-page DOM event mechanism, not evidence of a general server webhook. Adobe Universal Editor events.

Figma embeds: iframe messages

Figma documents prototype events sent as messages from the iframe. Its example checks that event.origin matches https://www.figma.com. Apply the documented origin check before trusting a message; an iframe message is still a browser event, not a webhook. Figma embed documentation.

DocSpring: editor callbacks

DocSpring documents callbacks including onSave and a catch-all onEvent. It says onSave observes successful saves; onDone fires only when there are no pending changes, active save request, or save error. These callbacks are browser-side integration points, not proof of provider-to-server delivery. DocSpring embedded editor documentation.

Browser-side events and forwarding

Use a browser callback when the page itself needs to react—for example, to update a status indicator after the editor reports a save. If the backend also needs to know, first check whether the provider offers a webhook for the event. Forwarding from the browser can be appropriate for application-specific UI telemetry or coordination, but do not use it as a substitute for a provider-authenticated event when server-side confirmation matters.

For iframe messages, validate the sender origin according to the provider’s guidance and validate the message shape before using it. For DOM events, attach listeners where the provider documents them and account for event bubbling and the distinction between a request being made and a successful response. Do not infer that a callback called “done” means “saved” without reading its defined conditions.

Handle ordering, retries, and duplicate work deliberately

Delivery behavior is not universal. In particular, CKEditor Cloud Services documents asynchronous, unordered webhook events. If events update stored state, compare provider event timestamps or versions using that provider’s documented semantics before allowing an older event to overwrite newer state. Preserve event identifiers where available and make side effects safe against duplicate processing when the provider’s delivery policy makes duplicates possible.

For other vendors, consult their current documentation for retry behavior, acknowledgement expectations, and delivery guarantees. The examples here do not establish those properties across products. Avoid inventing a retry schedule or assuming “exactly once” delivery.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • No request reaches the endpoint: confirm that the selected event is available as a server webhook, that the configured URL is correct and publicly reachable, and that the provider integration is enabled. A browser callback does not automatically generate a server request.
  • The endpoint gets a request but processing fails: compare the body with the provider’s event-specific example. Handle event envelopes and optional fields as documented, rather than assuming all event types share one payload.
  • Authentication rejects a valid-looking event: verify the provider’s prescribed signature procedure, timestamp handling, secret, and exact request bytes. Do not improvise a signature implementation or trust an unsigned body merely to make the handler pass.
  • State appears to go backward: check whether the provider sends events asynchronously or out of order. CKEditor Cloud Services explicitly warns that its webhook events should not be assumed to arrive in order; use documented timestamps or version data when applying updates.
  • The UI reacts but the backend does not: that is expected for a browser-only callback or iframe message unless the host application forwards it. Prefer a provider webhook for backend work when one exists.
  • A callback fires at an unexpected point: read the callback’s exact success and completion conditions. DocSpring, for example, defines onDone as requiring no pending changes, active save request, or save error; it is not interchangeable with every save notification.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate task is capturing the editor page for inspection or documentation—not receiving its application events—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot capture does not replace a webhook or deliver editor events to your backend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive an editor’s save event if the editor only documents a JavaScript callback?

Not directly as a provider-to-server event. You can react in the browser and may forward data from your host application, but that is a client-originated request; check whether the provider offers an authenticated webhook for server-confirmed saves.

Does a webhook guarantee that events arrive once and in order?

There is no cross-vendor guarantee. Check the selected provider’s delivery documentation; CKEditor Cloud Services specifically describes asynchronous, unordered delivery.
