If you still see Undo in Gmail’s “Message sent” notification, click or tap it immediately. That is Gmail’s only normal way to stop a message. It is not a true post-delivery recall: Gmail delays final sending for a short, configurable period (up to 30 seconds), rather than removing an email from someone else’s inbox.
As of August 18, 2026, once the Undo option disappears, Gmail cannot remotely retract an ordinary delivered message. Use the steps below for your device, then follow the recovery checklist if the window has expired.
Unsend an email immediately
On a computer
- Send the message in Gmail at mail.google.com.
- Watch the lower-left corner for the Message sent notification.
- Click Undo before the cancellation period ends.
Gmail cancels that send attempt and returns the message to the compose window, where you can edit it or discard it. The notification may also include View message. See Google’s official send and unsend instructions.
On Android
In the Gmail app, send the message and immediately tap Undo in the sent notification. Google documents the same control for Android in its Android instructions.

On iPhone or iPad
Send the message, then tap Undo in the notification that appears. The iPhone and iPad instructions describe this process.
If you sent the message through Apple Mail, Outlook, or another client, its controls may differ. Google recommends using the Gmail app or Gmail website when you need Gmail’s Undo Send behavior.
Set the maximum Gmail cancellation period
Gmail lets you choose 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds. Thirty seconds is the maximum; it is not 30 minutes.

- Click the gear icon, then See all settings.
- Stay on the General tab and find Undo Send.
- Set Send cancellation period to 30 seconds (or another available value).
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save changes.
This is a preventive delay. Changing the setting after an earlier message was sent cannot recover that message. A longer delay gives you more time to catch a wrong recipient or attachment, but it also delays delivery by up to 30 seconds. Details are in Google’s Gmail sending help.
Can Gmail recall a message after Undo disappears?
No—not an ordinary email. Gmail has no user-facing command that removes a delivered message from a recipient’s mailbox, whether the address is Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Apple, a company server, or another provider. “Recall” is common shorthand for Undo Send, not a remote deletion feature.
Deleting the copy in your Sent folder only changes your mailbox. It does not delete the recipient’s copy. An unread message, read receipt, or the recipient’s use of Gmail does not change this limitation. Workspace administrators may have separate retention, investigation, or security procedures, but those are not a standard Gmail recall button.
If the Undo button disappeared
The period may have expired, the notification may have been dismissed, or the message may have been sent from a different mail app. A temporary Wi-Fi or mobile-data problem can also interfere with the notification. First check Sent to confirm what happened, then:

- Contact the recipient immediately and explain the mistake.
- Send a concise correction or retraction, if appropriate.
- Ask the recipient not to open, forward, copy, or retain the message, and to delete it (including Trash or Deleted Items where appropriate).
- If you exposed a password, API key, recovery code, or access token, revoke or rotate it immediately.
- For personal, financial, health, legal, or company-confidential data, follow your organization’s security, privacy, legal, or compliance reporting process.

Special cases that are not ordinary recall
Confidential mode
Confidential mode must have been enabled before sending. To revoke access, open the message in Sent and click Remove access. This controls access to the confidential message until its expiration; it does not turn a normal email into a recall.

Confidential mode can disable forwarding, copying, printing, and downloading, but it cannot prevent screenshots or photographs, and it cannot erase information the recipient already viewed or copied independently. See Google’s Confidential mode documentation.
Scheduled messages
A scheduled message has not been delivered yet, so you can cancel it:
- Open Gmail and select Scheduled in the left panel.
- Open the message.
- Click Cancel send.
Gmail returns it to Drafts. This is cancellation before delivery, not recall after delivery. Google’s instructions are at Schedule emails to send.

- Set Undo Send to 30 seconds.
- Use Schedule send for high-risk or late-night messages so you have time to review them.
- Before sending, verify every recipient, attachment, link, quoted section, and sensitive detail.
- Use Confidential mode when access controls fit the situation, while remembering its screenshot limitations.
- For business accounts, Google Workspace can add administration and organizational security policies, but it does not convert Gmail’s 30-second Undo Send into post-delivery recall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recall a Gmail email after one hour?
No. After the Undo Send period ends (at most 30 seconds), Gmail cannot remove an ordinary delivered message from the recipient’s mailbox. Contact the recipient and begin any needed security or privacy response.
Does deleting a message from Sent recall it?
No. It deletes or moves only your copy. The recipient’s copy remains in their mailbox.
Can I recall a Gmail message sent to Outlook or Yahoo?
No. Gmail has no remote-recall channel for ordinary messages sent to external providers.
