To show the newest comments first on a WordPress post, go to Settings > Discussion, change the comment display order to newest first, and save. If comments are paginated, also check which page opens by default: page order and the order of comments within each page are separate controls.

Change the comment order in WordPress

  1. Sign in with an account allowed to change site settings.
  2. Open Settings > Discussion in the WordPress dashboard.
  3. Find the section for breaking comments into pages. If pagination is enabled, review both the number of top-level comments per page and which page is displayed by default.
  4. Set the within-page display order to show the newest comment first, then save the settings.
  5. Open a post with several comments on the public site and confirm that the latest comment appears at the top of the intended page.

WordPress describes this control as choosing, “within each page, whether the oldest, or newest, comment is to be displayed first.”

Understand pagination before testing

Pagination can make a correctly saved setting look wrong. The first page may be the oldest or newest page, while the comments inside that page can independently be sorted oldest-to-newest or newest-to-oldest.

Control What it changes What to verify
Default page Which group of comments opens first Open the first page and then another page
Within-page order The sequence of comments inside each page The newest comment on that page should be at the top
Comments per page How many top-level comments each page contains Confirm the post has enough comments to create multiple pages

After saving, test more than one page when pagination is active. A newest-first setting within each page does not necessarily make the newest comment on the entire post appear on the first page.

Make sure you are changing the right comment list

The comment thread below a post

The Settings > Discussion option controls how comments are displayed on posts when the site uses the normal WordPress comment template.

The Latest Comments block

The Latest Comments block is a separate, sitewide list of recent comments. It can be inserted in a template, template part, page, or widget area. Its own settings control the number of comments and whether to show the commenter avatar, date, and excerpt. Changing the post-thread setting does not configure this block.

The dashboard Comments screen

The admin Comments screen has its own table, which WordPress documentation describes as showing the most recent comment first. That administrative table order does not determine the order visitors see beneath a post.

If visitors still see the oldest comments first

  1. Return to Settings > Discussion and confirm the change was saved.
  2. Test the actual post thread, not the dashboard Comments table or a Latest Comments block.
  3. If comments are paginated, inspect both the default page and another page, checking page order separately from within-page order.
  4. Check whether the theme uses the normal WordPress comment template.
  5. Temporarily identify whether a plugin or custom comment system supplies the visible thread. Such systems may ignore the core Discussion setting.

A cache can also make an old rendering appear briefly after a settings change, so clear the relevant page or site cache before drawing conclusions.

Developer options for custom themes

If a theme renders comments with wp_list_comments(), its developer can set the documented reverse_top_level argument to true. WordPress defines that argument as displaying the newest comments first.

wp_list_comments( array(
    'reverse_top_level' => true,
) );

This is a theme-level implementation detail, not a replacement for checking the dashboard setting. A custom renderer may pass different arguments or ignore the normal template entirely.

Custom comment queries

Code that retrieves comments directly with WP_Comment_Query can control sorting with its orderby and order parameters. The developer reference documents comment_date_gmt as the default orderby and DESC as the default order. Developers diagnosing a mismatch should inspect both the query and the code that renders its results.

$comments = new WP_Comment_Query( array(
    'orderby' => 'comment_date_gmt',
    'order'   => 'DESC',
) );

These APIs explain how a custom theme can produce newest-first output; they do not establish that every WordPress theme or plugin uses them.

Quick diagnosis: which list is out of order?

What you are looking at Relevant control
Comments beneath one post Settings > Discussion, pagination settings, or the theme’s comment renderer
Recent comments shown in a sidebar, template, or page The Latest Comments block’s settings or the component that outputs it
Comments in the WordPress dashboard The admin Comments table; its order is separate from frontend display
