To read an Instagram DM without showing “Seen,” turn off Show read receipts before opening the conversation. Instagram offers this control for all chats and, where available, individual chats. It hides the read receipt—not your identity or every sign that you interacted with the person.
Turn off read receipts for all chats
Use the Instagram app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu, then open Settings and activity (the label may vary).
- Tap Messages and story replies.
- Choose Show read receipts and turn the setting off.
- Only then open the conversation you want to read.
Meta documents the setting under account settings → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts. Menu names and placement can vary by app version, language, account, and interface rollout. Meta’s announcement describes controls for all chats and specific chats. Instagram’s Help Center lists read-receipt management on mobile, not computers.
Turn off read receipts for one chat
If you want receipts disabled only in a particular conversation, open the chat and tap the person’s name or chat information at the top. Look under Privacy and safety for Read receipts or Show read receipts, then switch it off. The per-chat option may not appear on every account or app build. Meta confirms the specific-chat control, but the exact placement can vary; a current interface example is also described by iDownloadBlog.

Check before opening the message
Confirm the relevant toggle is off before opening the conversation. If you already opened a message while read receipts were enabled, do not assume that switching them off afterward will erase a receipt already sent; changing the setting later is not a guaranteed retroactive fix.
Avoid replying, reacting, calling, or otherwise interacting if your goal is discretion. Those actions can make it obvious that you saw the message even when the “Seen” label is hidden. Do not treat the read-receipt setting as a guarantee for every message type, including disappearing photos or videos.

“Seen” is not the same as “Active now”
Read receipts show whether a message has been read. Activity Status is a separate visibility control for presence information, such as whether you are active. Turning off read receipts alone does not necessarily hide activity indicators. If you also want to limit what others can see about your presence, look for Activity Status in Instagram’s current privacy or visibility settings; its Help Center guidance covers that separate control. Typing, replying, or reacting may also reveal activity.

A notification preview may show some message text without opening the Instagram chat, but it is only a limited workaround. Long messages can be cut off, and previews cannot fully convey photos, videos, voice messages, links, or interactive content. Tapping a notification may open the conversation. A lock-screen preview can also expose private text to anyone who can see your device.

For privacy, limit message previews in your phone’s notification settings. Instagram separately provides controls for message and message-request notifications, but does not present previews as an anonymous-reading feature. See Instagram’s notification guidance.
Message requests and hidden requests
A message request is separate from an accepted chat. Requests appear in a separate area until accepted, so do not assume their behavior is identical to a conversation in your main inbox. Hidden requests are filtered into a separate folder; Instagram says these do not generate notifications. That does not guarantee that every way of opening or accepting a request is invisible. Methods that are not dependable read-receipt fixes
- Airplane mode: Do not rely on it. Activity may synchronize when the device reconnects, and behavior can change with app updates.
- Mark as unread: This is an inbox-management feature, not a way to reverse a read receipt already sent.
- Mute or archive: These manage notifications or inbox organization; they are not read-receipt controls.
- Restrict or block: These affect how you interact with someone, but should not be treated as guaranteed ways to conceal that you read an existing message.
Use Instagram’s read-receipt setting rather than relying on unrelated controls as privacy hacks.

Do not give a supposed DM viewer your Instagram password, browser cookie, verification code, or permission to install a “security” download. A service making this promise may harvest credentials, expose private messages, take over an account, install unwanted software, or simply charge for a feature it never provides. Do not assume an outside service has legitimate access to private DMs. Review Meta’s Privacy Center and account controls instead.

If you cannot find the setting
- Use the official Instagram app on a phone or tablet; Instagram’s Help Center says read-receipt management is not available on computers.
- Update the app, close and reopen it, then check Messages and story replies again.
- Look inside the individual chat’s information or privacy controls if you need a per-chat setting.
- If the control is still missing, your account or app interface may differ. Do not open a sensitive message while troubleshooting if avoiding a receipt matters.
Finally, a hidden read receipt is not the same as a private conversation from Instagram itself. Meta’s information about end-to-end encrypted chats describes what encryption means for supported chats and notes changes affecting older encrypted conversations after June 23, 2025. Availability and handling can depend on the chat; do not infer from a hidden “Seen” label that Instagram cannot access message content.
