WordPress does not document a built-in random-order argument for its user queries. The reliable pattern is to query an explicitly defined, bounded set of eligible users with WP_User_Query or get_users(), randomize that result in PHP, and render only the fields your visitors should see.
Choose who may appear before you randomize anything
A registered-user list is a privacy decision, not just a display setting. Decide which roles are eligible, which accounts must be excluded, and whether names, avatars or profile links are appropriate for public viewing. Do not expose email addresses, login names or other sensitive fields merely because the API can return them.
- Include only the roles that belong in the public list.
- Exclude administrator, service and test accounts where appropriate.
- Request only the fields required by the template.
- Set a maximum candidate count and a maximum number of displayed users.

Recommended implementation with get_users()
This example collects up to 100 eligible users, shuffles that candidate array, then displays five. Replace the role and excluded IDs with rules that match your site.

This produces a random subset from the candidates fetched for that request. It is not a guarantee that every account has equal long-term exposure, and repeatedly loading the page may produce different results. For very large memberships, review a design suited to your scale rather than expanding the candidate limit without bound.

Using WP_User_Query for more control
Use the class when eligibility spans several roles or requires more explicit query arguments. The result can be handled with the same separate selection step.

?>WP_User_Query also supports include/exclude filters, ordering, limits and paging. Those controls narrow and shape the candidate set; the random choice remains application logic in this approach.

For a conventional list, you can let WordPress generate the markup:

?>These options provide ordinary ordering and limits, not a documented random order. Choose a custom query when random selection, role rules or bespoke markup are requirements.

Performance and privacy safeguards
- Keep the candidate set bounded. The user-query documentation cautions against unbounded retrieval on larger sites; use
numberand, where appropriate, paging. - Do not fetch unnecessary data. Avoid fields such as email and login unless the feature genuinely requires them and your privacy policy permits publication.
- Cache deliberately. If the same random group should remain stable for a period, cache the selected IDs rather than querying and reshuffling on every request. Choose a duration that matches the feature’s purpose.
- Check empty results. Roles, exclusions or an empty membership can leave no candidates, so provide a fallback message or hide the component.
- Review access expectations. A user account existing in WordPress does not, by itself, establish consent to appear in a public directory.
Plugin and administration alternatives
A directory plugin can be appropriate when you need registration flows, profiles, cards and directory shortcodes in addition to a random widget. WP User Manager’s WordPress.org listing describes those broader directory features, but it does not establish a random-display feature, current compatibility, pricing or affiliate availability. Verify the plugin’s present documentation and test it with your theme before relying on it.
WP-CLI’s wp user list command is useful for administrators inspecting users and restricting output fields. It is an administrative tool, not a front-end random display mechanism.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Everyone appears every time: confirm that you call
shuffle()beforearray_slice(), and that page or object caching is not serving one cached response. - Too few users appear: inspect the role and exclusion rules and ensure the candidate limit is at least as large as the requested display count.
- Sensitive data leaks: reduce
fieldsand escape output; never print an entireWP_Userobject into a template. - Large sites slow down: lower the bounded candidate set, use paging or a reviewed scalable selection design, and measure the result in your own environment.
