In a legacy Internet Explorer 11 desktop installation, open Tools (the gear icon) > Internet Options > General > Languages > Language Preferences. Move the language you want to the top of the preferred-language list, select OK, and restart Internet Explorer.
This changes the language preference that websites can detect. It does not translate page content or change the language of Windows menus.
Change the preferred website language in Internet Explorer 11
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Select the Tools gear in the upper-right corner. You can also press Alt+X.
- Choose Internet Options.
- On the General tab, select Languages.
- Select Language Preferences.
- Choose the language you want websites to prefer. Use Move up until it is first in the list. Add it first if it is not listed.
- Select OK on each open dialog, close Internet Explorer, and reopen it.
Websites that support content negotiation may now serve the first compatible language in your list. A site can still use its own account, region, cookie, or language-menu setting instead.
What this setting changes—and what it does not

Windows Preferred languages and Windows display language can be configured independently. Changing the preferred list does not automatically change the Windows interface.

Use Windows settings when Internet Explorer’s language dialog is unavailable
Internet Explorer is retired software, so some installations no longer expose the old dialog or cannot launch the desktop application. On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, add the language if necessary.
- Move it to the top of the list.
Microsoft says the first supported language in this list determines the language used by Microsoft Store apps and websites. The exact labels and layout vary between Windows releases.

Change the Windows interface language
To change the language of Windows itself, select the desired option under Windows display language. Install the language first if Windows requests it. Signing out and back in may be required before the change appears across Settings, File Explorer, and other interface elements.
If the site still appears in the old language
- Check the site’s own language selector; it may override the browser preference.
- Confirm the desired language is first, not merely present in the list.
- Close and reopen Internet Explorer after changing the order.
- Sign in to the site and review its account or regional language setting.
- Remember that the preference cannot translate text when the site has no version in that language.
Internet Explorer support status
Internet Explorer 11 desktop support ended on June 15, 2022, for certain Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channels and Windows 10 IoT Semi-Annual Channels. Microsoft scheduled permanent disablement of the desktop app on certain Windows 10 versions through an Edge update on February 14, 2023. Availability differs by Windows version and edition.

For general browsing, Microsoft recommends Microsoft Edge. If a business or internal site still requires Internet Explorer compatibility, use Internet Explorer mode in Edge where it is available. Microsoft’s lifecycle information states that IE mode is supported through at least 2029, with one year’s notice before retirement; the applicable support details depend on the Windows version and edition.

Which method should you use?
- Still running a legacy IE 11 desktop installation: use Internet Options > General > Languages and move the preferred language to the top.
- IE’s old dialog is missing: set the order under Windows Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- You need Windows menus in another language: change Windows display language instead of only the website preference.
- You need an old site that no longer works in IE: open it in Edge IE mode rather than relying on the unsupported desktop browser.
