TrueCrypt is discontinued, and its official site warns that it may contain unfixed security issues. For a new encrypted flash drive, use VeraCrypt, which can also open TrueCrypt-format volumes. For most people, the safest starting point is an encrypted container file on the USB drive: it protects the files you put inside without requiring you to erase the whole drive.
Is TrueCrypt still safe to use?
No new TrueCrypt setup is recommended. The project is discontinued, and the official TrueCrypt site warns that the software may contain unfixed security issues. That is not evidence of a confirmed backdoor, but it is a good reason not to install an old TrueCrypt release for new protection or download it from an unofficial mirror.
VeraCrypt is the current practical choice for new volumes and supports TrueCrypt-format volumes. Its official download page lists version 1.26.29, released June 9, 2026. Download it only from the official site, and verify its signature if your threat model warrants the extra check. Existing TrueCrypt volumes can often be opened or migrated, but preserve a backup and test it before changing or deleting anything.

A VeraCrypt container is a file that holds an encrypted virtual disk. It can sit alongside ordinary files on the flash drive and is usually easier to back up and less disruptive than encrypting the entire device. Its approximate size and filename are visible, and you must mount it before using its contents. A damaged container can affect many files at once.

Whole-device encryption reduces the chance of accidentally leaving sensitive files outside the encrypted area. It also means existing contents must be backed up and usually erased, and you cannot access the drive without compatible software. For most readers, use a container unless there is a specific need to encrypt the entire device.
Create a VeraCrypt container on Windows
These steps use the VeraCrypt Windows interface. Labels may differ in later releases. Back up important files first, check that the USB drive has enough free space, and decide which operating systems need to read the drive. VeraCrypt availability on Windows, macOS, and Linux does not guarantee that every host, filesystem, or restricted computer will work.
- Download and launch VeraCrypt from its official download page.
- Click Create Volume, choose Create an encrypted file container, then choose Standard VeraCrypt volume.
- Click Select File, browse to the flash drive, and enter a new filename such as
PrivateData.hc. Choose a new filename; selecting an existing file replaces it rather than encrypting it. - Leave the default encryption and hash settings unless you have a documented reason to change them. Set a container size that leaves room for any other files you plan to keep on the USB drive.
- Enter and confirm a long, unique passphrase. Move the mouse in the wizard’s randomness area, click Format, and wait for creation to finish.
- Exit the wizard. Creating the container does not encrypt files that were already on the USB drive or elsewhere; you will copy sensitive files into it after mounting.
For an ordinary container, consider the wizard’s format options rather than assuming Quick Format is always wrong or always appropriate. VeraCrypt specifically warns against Quick Format when creating an outer volume intended to contain a hidden volume; that is a separate, advanced configuration.

Mount, use, and lock the container
- Insert the flash drive and open VeraCrypt. Select an unused drive letter.
- Click Select File and choose the
.hccontainer on the USB drive. - Click Mount, enter the passphrase, and leave PRF autodetection in place unless you know you need another setting. Autodetection can take longer.
- Open the newly mounted drive letter in File Explorer. Copy or move your sensitive files into it and work with them as you would on an ordinary disk.
- When finished, close files and applications using the volume. In VeraCrypt, select the mounted volume and click Unmount. Wait until it disappears from the mounted-volume list, then eject the flash drive using Windows’ safe-eject control.
While mounted, files are decrypted in memory as they are read and encrypted before they are written. They are not protected from malware, a keylogger, a malicious administrator, or someone using an already-unlocked computer. Do not remove the USB drive while the volume is mounted or files are open.
Encrypt the entire USB drive instead
Warning: this can erase existing data. Do not proceed unless you have a complete backup on separate storage and have opened several files from that backup to confirm it works. Encryption does not make a failing flash drive recoverable.
- Run VeraCrypt with administrator privileges.
- Click Create Volume, then choose the option to encrypt a non-system partition/drive.
- Select a standard volume unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to use a hidden volume. Carefully identify the correct removable partition or device.
- Confirm that the existing data can be erased. Select the filesystem and encryption options, then complete the wizard’s formatting or encryption process.
- Mount the encrypted device through VeraCrypt. Only after confirming that it mounts successfully should you copy files back from the verified backup.
Filesystem choice affects compatibility. FAT32 is widely supported but cannot store an individual file larger than roughly 4 GB. NTFS is more Windows-oriented. exFAT is commonly used for removable storage across platforms, but support depends on the operating system and configuration. Check the current VeraCrypt documentation and the target computers before choosing; there is no filesystem that is best for every setup.

Can you use VeraCrypt on any computer?
No. VeraCrypt’s portable mode avoids a conventional installation, but on Windows it still requires administrator privileges. A computer may block USB access, driver loading, or third-party software under its security policy. A portable copy of VeraCrypt stored on the flash drive is not itself encrypted, and running it may leave evidence in the host computer’s registry.

Do not assume you can unlock the drive on a public, school, workplace, library, or borrowed computer. A hostile or infected computer can capture your passphrase or copy files while the volume is mounted. Portable mode does not prevent that.
Keep passwords, keys, and recovery copies safe
Use a long, unique passphrase and store it somewhere separate from the encrypted drive, such as a reputable password manager. Password recovery is not a normal fallback: if the passphrase is lost, access may be permanently lost. A keyfile can add another authentication requirement, but losing it or changing it without planning can also lock you out. Never keep the only copy of a passphrase or keyfile inside the encrypted volume.

For an important volume, consult VeraCrypt’s official documentation about making a volume header backup. The header contains information needed to mount a volume, so damage to it can prevent access even if the encrypted data remains. Store a header backup securely: it is sensitive, may assist an attacker with volume analysis or restoration, and is not a substitute for a complete data backup.
Keep at least one separate, current backup and verify that it opens with the required password or keyfile. A single encrypted USB drive is not an archival plan; flash storage can fail, suffer corruption, or be lost or damaged.
Move an existing TrueCrypt volume
- Do not overwrite the original volume. Make a separate backup copy first.
- Install the current VeraCrypt release from its official site and test whether it can mount the TrueCrypt-format volume.
- If you need to migrate it, follow VeraCrypt’s official TrueCrypt conversion documentation. The volume type, settings, filesystem, operating system, and physical condition can affect the process.
- Where practical, copy the decrypted files into a newly created VeraCrypt volume. Verify the files, make a backup of the new volume, and keep the old copy until the new one is confirmed usable.
Do not assume every TrueCrypt volume can be converted automatically or without risk. Work from a copy, not the only copy.

What encryption does not cover
Encryption helps protect data at rest while the volume is locked. It does not protect files copied elsewhere in unencrypted form, and it cannot prevent deletion, corruption, hardware failure, or malware. Applications may create temporary or recovery files outside the encrypted volume; other possible traces include browser caches, print queues, paging files, hibernation files, crash dumps, and cloud-sync folders. Avoid untrusted computers and check where the applications you use save temporary or backup data.
If you copied sensitive files into a new container, verify the encrypted copies before dealing with the unencrypted originals. Ordinary deletion or secure-delete tools cannot reliably erase flash storage because wear-leveling may leave data in remapped cells. The safer approach is to encrypt before sensitive files are stored on the device, or follow the storage manufacturer’s guidance for erasing and recreating it.
Troubleshooting access problems
- Wrong password: Check the keyboard layout, capitalization, accidental spaces, whether a keyfile was used, and whether you selected the right volume. If the password is genuinely lost, assume the data may be unrecoverable.
- Windows says the disk must be formatted: Cancel the prompt if the device is supposed to contain a VeraCrypt-encrypted partition or device. Open it through VeraCrypt instead; Windows may not recognize the encrypted filesystem.
- VeraCrypt cannot see the USB drive: Check whether the operating system detects it, try another USB port, and see whether it appears in Disk Management. Do not format, initialize, or repartition it if it contains data you need.
- The volume will not mount: Possible causes include a wrong password or keyfile, incompatible settings, a damaged header or flash drive, missing permissions, driver or operating-system incompatibility, or another process using the volume. When possible, troubleshoot a copy and consult VeraCrypt’s official documentation rather than experimenting on the only copy.
When another option may fit better
If you use Windows alone, check whether BitLocker To Go is supported by your edition, device, and organization’s policy. Its recovery-key process matters, and cross-platform access is less convenient.

Encrypted archives can work for a small number of files or transfers, but archive settings and metadata protection vary, and extraction can create unencrypted copies. Hardware-encrypted USB drives may suit locked-down or managed environments, but they still need backups and depend on their vendor and management system.
