For one WordPress post or page, set its visibility to Password Protected for a shared-password gate or Private for access by authorized WordPress users. To restrict an entire site, members, or specific roles, add and test an access-control layer: WordPress’s built-in visibility settings apply to individual posts and pages, not the whole site.

Choose the right kind of protection

The right setting depends on who should read the content and how you want to grant access. WordPress offers three built-in visibility states for posts and pages:

Option Who can read it Best fit Main limitation
Public Everyone Normal public publishing It does not restrict access.
Password Protected Anyone with the shared post password Simple sharing of an individual post or page The password is shared, limited to 20 characters, and WordPress remembers one post password at a time. Custom-field output may need separate protection.
Private Users with appropriate WordPress permissions, ordinarily Editors and Administrators Internal or staff content It is not a membership system for ordinary visitors; privileged users can see and change the content.
Restriction plugin or server rule Depends on the configured rule Whole-site, account-, role-, or membership-based access Requires extra software or configuration that you must maintain and test.

WordPress’s content visibility documentation explains the built-in states and notes that restricting an entire site is not a core feature. Consider whether access should depend on a shared secret, a logged-in account, a role or membership, or a rule covering only part of the content. Also account for reader friction, the number of protected items, the need to revoke access for one person, and whether direct media-file URLs need protection.

Password-protect a specific post or page

  1. Open the post or page in the Block Editor and find Status & Visibility. In the Classic Editor, use the Publish controls.
  2. Change Visibility from Public to Password Protected.
  3. Enter a password, then select Publish or Update to apply the change.
  4. Tell readers how they will receive the password. Do not reuse a sensitive account password as the shared content password.
  5. Open the page while logged out, or in a separate browser session, and test the reader experience.

WordPress’s visibility guide describes Password Protected as a per-post or per-page setting. Its password-protection documentation states that post passwords are limited to 20 characters and that a browser cookie remembers the password. WordPress tracks one post password at a time, so a visitor moving between posts with different passwords may be asked again.

Core withholds the protected post content and excerpt, but a theme or custom code may still print custom-field data unless that output is gated. Titles and excerpts are also displayed differently for protected content. Check any template, feed, search result, or custom output that might reveal material beyond the protected post body.

Make content private for WordPress users

  1. Open the post or page and locate Status & Visibility in the Block Editor, or the Publish controls in the Classic Editor.
  2. Change Visibility to Private.
  3. Select Publish or Update, then test the content as an ordinary logged-out visitor.

Private content is intended for users with appropriate WordPress permissions, ordinarily Editors and Administrators. According to WordPress’s documentation, private posts do not appear in article lists to ordinary visitors and cannot be viewed simply by guessing the URL. Use this setting for privileged site users, not as a substitute for granting individual customers or members access.

Restrict an entire site, members, or selected roles

Core post and page visibility does not lock every route into a site. WordPress’s content visibility documentation points to plugins for site-wide restrictions and also describes server-level .htaccess controls as an option.

The WordPress.org listing for Password Protected advertises whole-site and partial-content features. Those are claims made by the plugin listing, not independent security results. Review its current compatibility, support information, and feature details before installing it or another extension.

A protected page does not automatically protect a separately addressable file or stop an authorized reader from copying material they can view. For valuable or sensitive content, test its direct URL while unauthorized and confirm what your site actually serves.

Protect the accounts that can expose content

Visibility settings decide who can read particular content; they do not secure the accounts that can publish or change it. WordPress’s brute-force attack guidance recommends strong, unique administrator passwords and discusses rate limiting, keeping WordPress core, themes, and plugins updated, and protecting XML-RPC when it is unused.

WordPress core does not include two-factor authentication (2FA). Its security handbook discusses adding 2FA through an appropriate plugin or identity provider, as well as passkeys and security keys for phishing-resistant sign-in when the authentication setup supports them. A hardware key is optional login protection; it does not determine who can read a post.

Keep backups you can restore

A typical full WordPress restore needs both the database and the site files. WordPress Developer Resources puts it plainly: “There are two parts to backing up your WordPress site: Database and Files. You need both to be able to fully restore a typical WordPress site.” See the official Backups guide.

That guide suggests weekly backups for smaller sites with fewer posts and daily backups for high-activity sites. These are operational recommendations, not measured statistics; set the schedule according to how much recent content you can afford to lose. Keep copies in separate locations or on different media, and periodically check that an automated backup can actually be restored.
