The WordPress More block lets you choose where a post preview ends on blog homepages and archive pages. It shows the content before the marker, then adds a link to the complete post—but only when the relevant theme or template displays the post’s full content. If the template uses excerpts, the More block may be ignored.
That distinction also separates the More block from the similarly named Read More block: More is inserted into an individual post, while Read More is normally added to a Query Loop or theme template.
What the More block does
The More block creates a manual break inside a post. On supported post lists, WordPress displays everything before the break as the preview and provides a link to the full article.

- After the block: the remaining post content, normally visible after the visitor opens the post.
- On the full post: the introductory content appears again by default, unless Hide the excerpt is enabled.
It is not a general-purpose hide/show element. Adding it to an ordinary page does not automatically conceal everything below it when that page is viewed directly.

WordPress stores the block as the static core/more block. Its basic markup is:

How to insert the More block
- Open the post in the WordPress Block Editor.
- Place the cursor where the preview should end—usually after the opening paragraph or two.
- Click the Block Inserter (+).
- Search for More, then select it.
- Alternatively, type
/morein a paragraph block and press Enter. - Save or update the post.
- Check the blog homepage and relevant archives to confirm the result.
Choose a point that gives readers useful context without reproducing most of the article. A break immediately after the title may feel abrupt; one near the end of the post defeats the purpose of a preview.

Change the “Read More” wording
After inserting the block, click its text and replace the default label with wording that describes the destination. Examples include:

Specific labels are more useful when a link is viewed outside its surrounding context. “Read more” is acceptable, but “Read the full WordPress tutorial” tells visitors more clearly what will open.
To restore the theme’s default label, remove all custom text from the More block and save the post. When no custom text is supplied, the theme’s default—possibly translated or restyled—is used.
Hide the introduction on the full post
By default, WordPress shows the content before the More block both in the archive preview and again on the full post. To use that content only as a teaser:

- Open the block settings sidebar with the settings or cog button if it is hidden.
- Find Hide the excerpt.
- Enable the setting.
- Preview both the archive and the full post.
Enable this option when the pre-More text is a deliberately written teaser that would be repetitive on the article page. Leave it disabled when the preview contains essential background, the opening paragraph, or other context the reader needs at the start of the full article.

Where the More block works
The block is primarily intended for lists of posts, including:
- The blog homepage
- Category, tag, and date archives
- Search results and other post lists, depending on the theme
- Some Query Loop configurations
Its effect depends on the listing template. A template that outputs full Post Content can honor the More marker. A template that outputs a Post Excerpt may use a manual or automatically generated excerpt instead.
Pages and custom post types require extra qualification. They may support the block when the theme or Query Loop renders them appropriately, but support is not universal. A More block placed in a standalone page should not be treated as a collapsible section.

A manual excerpt is independent of the More block. When no manual excerpt is supplied, WordPress documentation describes an automatic fallback based on the first 55 words, followed by […] in the Excerpt block. The theme or template can affect how that content is presented.

The Excerpt block can include an optional Read More link and provides template-level control over its presentation. The separate Read More block is a dynamic core/read-more block with controls for link text, target behavior, typography, color, spacing, borders, and other styling.
Simple rule: If you are editing an individual post and want to choose where its preview ends, use More. If you are editing the post-list template and want to design the link, use Read More. Read More does not define how much post content appears before the link.
Using More with block themes and Query Loop
On a block theme, open Appearance → Editor and inspect the relevant template or Query Loop. Within the Post Template, check whether the listing uses Post Content or Post Excerpt. These choices often determine whether the More marker affects the visible preview.
A Query Loop can use different combinations of Post Content, Post Excerpt, and Read More blocks. As a result, the same post can look different on the homepage, a category archive, search results, and a custom Query Loop. Adjust the template when the desired result is a consistent site-wide archive design rather than an individual editorial cutoff.

Why the More block appears not to work
- The archive uses excerpts. Check Settings → Reading, the theme’s archive template, and any Query Loop settings. If the template requests excerpts, the More block may be ignored.
- You are viewing a standalone page. The block primarily affects posts displayed in lists, not a page opened directly.
- The wrong block was added. More belongs inside the post. Read More belongs in a Query Loop or theme template.
- The template is custom. A theme may use custom excerpt handling or render content in a way that does not expose the marker.
- There is a second More block. WordPress allows only one More block per post. Remove the duplicate or move the existing block.
- The editor preview is misleading. The editor shows the block as a divider; theme styling controls its final spacing, color, typography, and label.
- A cache is showing an older version. Check the result in a private window, then clear relevant browser, plugin, hosting, or CDN caches.
Do not confuse the visual archive result with feed settings. Settings → Reading also controls the number of posts shown per page and whether feeds contain full text or excerpts, but feed behavior is separate from the theme’s homepage and archive template.
A practical test procedure
After adding or moving the block, test the actual contexts your visitors use:
- Blog homepage
- Category or tag archive
- Search results
- Full single-post view
- Mobile view
- Any custom Query Loop
Confirm that the preview ends at the intended point, the link wording is correct, the full post has the desired introduction behavior, and the cutoff does not leave a heading, image, or embed looking disconnected.

Best practices
- Place the break after a meaningful introduction, not at an arbitrary sentence.
- Review the result on mobile as well as desktop.
- Use descriptive link text when it improves clarity.
- Do not hide essential context merely to avoid repetition.
- Use a manual excerpt when the archive needs a polished summary that is different from the article opening.
- Use an Excerpt block when the site owner wants archive behavior controlled centrally.
- Remember that the More block is a presentation and navigation feature—not a privacy control, access restriction, or proven SEO improvement.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Is this a post list rather than a directly viewed page?
- Does the template output Post Content or Post Excerpt?
- Did you insert the More block, not the template-level Read More block?
- Is there only one More block in the post?
- Did you save or update the post?
- Have you checked the relevant Query Loop or block theme template?
- Could browser, WordPress, hosting, or CDN caching be serving an old page?
