The safest Weebly-to-WordPress migration is staged: inventory the site, save Weebly’s archive, import supported content through the route that matches your WordPress destination, rebuild the design and platform-specific features, test the result, then change the domain or DNS. WordPress.com documents an XML-based Weebly import for pages, posts, comments and media, but it does not transfer your theme, custom domain or personal settings.
1. Decide which WordPress destination you are using
First distinguish between WordPress.com and WordPress software installed on separate hosting. The documented automated Weebly flow is for WordPress.com; a self-hosted installation requires you to arrange hosting, install WordPress and use whatever import or manual workflow that setup provides.

Before touching the live domain, make an inventory of:
- Published pages and their current URL paths
- Blog posts, dates, authors, categories, tags and comments
- Images, documents, video embeds and other media
- Menus, navigation, forms, slideshows and third-party embeds
- Store products, orders, customer-facing pages and payment integrations
- Analytics, email forms, SEO metadata and other services connected to the site
- The registrar, DNS provider and any custom domain attached to Weebly
This list becomes your migration checklist and your post-move comparison set.

2. Save a Weebly archive before rebuilding
- Open the Weebly site editor.
- Go to Settings > General.
- Scroll to Archive, enter an email address and choose Email Archive.
- Download the ZIP link delivered by email and keep an offline copy.
Weebly describes this ZIP as a backup or aid for recreating the site elsewhere. It cannot be imported back into Weebly. It is also incomplete: Weebly states, “Blog and store pages aren’t included in the export as they rely directly on our database.” Components such as Contact Form and Slideshow may not work correctly outside the Weebly editor, so treat the archive as reference material rather than a complete, working clone.
3. Import content using the route that fits your destination
WordPress.com: use its Weebly import flow
WordPress.com’s “Import from Weebly” process describes an automated migration that creates a Weebly XML file and then imports it into WordPress.com. The documented content coverage includes pages, posts, comments and media items; the flow also includes reassigning authors.
Follow the prompts in the WordPress.com migration guide for the current interface. Do not confuse this XML conversion with WordPress’s native Tools > Export feature: WordPress’s WXR export is designed to move data from one WordPress site to another, not to read a Weebly site directly.
Self-hosted WordPress: confirm the available importer first
A self-hosted site does not necessarily expose the same screens or automation as WordPress.com. Install and secure WordPress on your chosen host, then check its importer options. If no suitable Weebly importer is available, use the Weebly archive and your inventory to recreate pages and manually copy content, media and settings. This approach demands more checking but lets you handle each page and feature deliberately.
4. Rebuild the parts that do not migrate as content
The WordPress.com guide explicitly says your theme, custom domain and personal settings are not transferred. Plan a separate rebuild for:
- Appearance: choose and configure a WordPress theme, then reproduce typography, colors, headers, footers and responsive layouts.
- Navigation: recreate menus and verify every parent, child and footer link.
- Forms and embeds: replace Weebly forms, slideshows and other editor-dependent components with WordPress-compatible equivalents, then submit each form yourself.
- Commerce: rebuild product catalogs, checkout, taxes, shipping, customer accounts and payment connections; do not assume Weebly store data is present in the archive.
- Search and sharing data: copy page titles, descriptions, image text and social-sharing settings where they matter, while retaining the old URL paths whenever practical.
If a path must change, create a redirect from the old URL to its new destination and test it after launch. Neither the archive nor the documented importer promises that every old URL or search signal will be preserved automatically.
5. Compare the old and new sites before launch
Build a small but representative test set: the home page, an ordinary page, a long page, several blog posts, an image-heavy page, a form, a store page if applicable, and any page receiving significant traffic. For each item, check:
- Text, headings, images, downloads and embedded media
- Internal and external links, menu behavior and mobile layout
- Forms, confirmation messages and notification delivery
- Products, cart, checkout and order notifications, if relevant
- Page titles, descriptions, canonical settings and share previews
- Old URLs, redirects, 404 responses and HTTPS behavior
Keep the Weebly site available while you test, and do not point visitors to the new site until these checks pass. The official documentation does not guarantee a perfect transfer for every account or feature, so verification is your protection against silent omissions.

Content migration, registrar transfer and DNS changes are separate operations. You can test a WordPress site on its temporary address while the Weebly domain continues serving visitors, then change DNS or transfer the domain after the new site is verified.
Weebly’s current service notice describes a wind-down affecting accounts in 67 countries. For users in those countries, the notice schedules affected sites to be unpublished on September 27, 2026, with account access ending on December 26, 2026. Those dates are not a universal shutdown schedule for all Weebly customers. If the notice applies to your account, download your data and arrange domain access before the applicable cutoff.
For a registrar transfer, Weebly notes that the domain must not be within the 60-day post-registration transfer restriction cited by ICANN, and registrar lock must be disabled to initiate the transfer. Check your registrar’s current requirements before following a click-by-click procedure, because labels and eligibility rules vary by provider.
Which migration route should you choose?
| Route | Best fit | Content coverage described | What you must rebuild or verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com Weebly import | A WordPress.com destination | Pages, posts, comments and media through a Weebly XML workflow | Theme, custom domain, personal settings, menus, forms, commerce and URL behavior |
| Manual recreation from the Weebly archive | Self-hosted WordPress or sites needing close feature-by-feature control | Whatever you copy and rebuild from the archive and your inventory; the ZIP excludes Weebly blog and store pages | Every page, media item, URL, integration and interactive feature must be checked individually |
The automated route generally reduces copying for supported content. Manual work takes longer but gives you a deliberate opportunity to redesign and replace Weebly-specific behavior. Neither route removes the need for a full pre-launch comparison.
