To print turn-by-turn directions, open Google Maps on a computer, build and select your route, click the print icon, then choose Print including maps or Print text only. For a plain map, use your browser’s print command or save the view as a PDF; for a custom map with pins or layers, use Google My Maps.
Print Google Maps directions on a computer
Google’s documented print workflow is for directions on a computer. Open Google Maps in a desktop browser and:
- Click Directions and enter your starting point and destination.
- Choose a travel mode, such as driving, walking, cycling, or transit, when available.
- Select the route you intend to take. Check that the origin, destination, and route are correct before printing.
- Click the Print icon.
- Choose Print including maps for the route map and written steps, or Print text only for a compact list of directions.
- Click Print, then select your printer and review its paper and layout settings.
Print including maps is useful when you need geographic context or landmarks, but it can use more paper and leave less room for text. Print text only is a better choice when you mainly need the turns or want to save paper and ink. A long route may span multiple pages, so inspect the preview before printing.
Print a plain map of a place or area
A plain map is different from a route. Google’s dedicated print instructions cover directions; they do not provide the same print-button workflow for every ordinary map view. As a browser fallback:

- Open Google Maps on a computer and search for the place or area.
- Pan and zoom until the area you want is visible. Choose a map layer, such as the standard map or satellite view, if available.
- Open the browser’s print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+P on Mac. These are browser shortcuts, not Google Maps commands.
- Check the preview. Adjust orientation, margins, or scaling if the map is cut off, then print—or choose the PDF destination to save it first.
Browser printing a live map is a workaround, not a guaranteed Google Maps export. If the preview is blank, incomplete, or badly cropped, wait for the map to finish loading, try another browser, or save a PDF and inspect that file before using paper.
Save directions or a map as a PDF
A PDF lets you check the layout before printing, keep a copy, or send the map to someone else. It does not guarantee an exact geographic scale: page size, margins, browser scaling, and map rendering affect the result.
- Directions: Follow the desktop route-print steps and choose Save as PDF or the equivalent PDF destination in the print dialog instead of a physical printer.
- Plain map: Position the map, open the browser print dialog, and select its PDF destination. Review the saved file for missing map tiles, cropped edges, and hard-to-read labels.
If you plan to print at a library or copy shop, a reviewed PDF is usually a more dependable handoff than a live Maps link, whose view or route may not open as intended.

Print from an iPhone or Android phone
Google’s dedicated directions-print instructions are for computers. Mobile print options depend on the phone, app version, operating system, and printer setup, so do not assume the Google Maps app will always show a Print button.
The reliable workaround is to create the route in the app, share the directions to email or a messaging app, then open the route on a computer and print it using the desktop steps above. On Android, Google documents this route-sharing path: open directions, choose a route, tap More, then Share directions and select an app. If you want to send directions to another device, Google notes that this is unavailable for routes with multiple destinations; that limitation concerns sending to a device, not the desktop print workflow.
Print a custom Google My Maps map
For a map with your own pins, layers, or annotations, use Google My Maps. On a computer:

- Sign in to My Maps and open your map.
- In the left panel, open More.
- Choose Print map and follow the print instructions.

My Maps can also export map information, including KML/KMZ for a map and CSV for an individual layer, but those are data exports rather than a ready-made paper layout. My Maps is a better fit for several planned locations or custom layers; for one simple route, ordinary Google Maps is quicker.

Make the printout easier to read
- Choose orientation based on the preview. Landscape can fit a wide route map better; portrait may suit a tall map or text-only directions.
- Use fit-to-page if edges are cut off. It can make the whole map fit, but may shrink street labels.
- Do not show too much at once. Zooming out includes more area but reduces label size. For a large region, save and print several readable map views instead of squeezing everything onto one sheet.
- Prefer the standard map for street names. Satellite imagery can help identify landmarks, but road labels may be less prominent.
- Pair the map with written directions for long trips. A map can provide context while text preserves the turn sequence without making the whole route tiny.
Google’s ordinary print workflow does not promise a user-controlled resolution or a particular scale. Check the preview rather than relying on a specific DPI or scale setting.

Troubleshoot common printing problems
The Print button is missing
First check whether you are viewing a route or just a place. Google documents its print control after you create and select a route on a computer. Open the route in desktop Google Maps, select it, and refresh the page if necessary. If the control still does not appear, try another browser, temporarily disable extensions that might interfere with page content, or use the browser print shortcut as a fallback. If you started on a phone, share the route and open it on a computer.
The preview is blank or incomplete
The map may still be loading, an extension may be interfering, or a shared route link may not have opened correctly. Wait and retry, try a private window or another browser, or rebuild the route directly in Google Maps. For directions, use the route’s own print control before falling back to the browser command. Saving to PDF can help reveal whether the problem is in the live print rendering.

Check the preview, try landscape orientation for a wide map, and use fit-to-page or less restrictive margins. If the live page continues to crop, save as PDF and print the reviewed file. Remember that fitting the page may reduce label readability.

Labels are tiny or blurry
Zoom in for clearer labels, but expect to show less surrounding area. If you need a large area, print several zoomed-in views. Satellite imagery can be harder to read as a street map, and shrinking a long route onto one page can make both the map and text difficult to use.
Your printer does not appear
Save the result as a PDF, then check that the printer is available to your computer and selected in the system print dialog. If you do not own a printer, you can take or upload the PDF to a local library or print shop; available services, file requirements, and prices vary.
Before relying on a printed route
Print a fresh copy close to departure and treat it as a reference, not a live navigation feed. Traffic, road closures, transit schedules, and other conditions can change. If you expect poor connectivity, prepare and save the PDF before you leave: Google’s offline map downloads in the mobile app are intended for offline map access and navigation, not necessarily for generating a paper printout. Also review a PDF before sharing it; it may reveal a home address, workplace, or travel plans.
