The quickest way to preview HTML is to save it as an .html file, open that file in a browser, and reload the page after you save changes. For automatic refresh, use an editor preview such as VS Code’s Integrated Browser or a scratchpad such as CodePen. If you need to inspect or temporarily edit a page that is already open, use the browser’s DevTools.

Preview a single HTML file by opening it in your browser

This is the simplest route for a self-contained page: it needs no editor extension, web hosting, or development server. You can use a plain-text editor or a code editor.

  1. Create a new file in your editor and enter a small HTML document, such as:
    <!doctype html>
    <html lang="en">
    <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
    <title>My first page</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <h1>Hello, browser</h1>
    <p>This is my HTML preview.</p>
    </body>
    </html>
  2. Save the file with an .html extension, for example index.html. Make sure the editor has not added .txt to the end of the filename.
  3. Open the file in a browser. You can usually double-click it in your file manager, or use the browser’s Open File command and select index.html. The address bar will show a local file:// address.
  4. Change the HTML in your editor, save the file, and reload the browser tab to see the update.

This workflow is useful for learning markup, checking a quick mockup, or previewing a page that only uses local HTML, CSS, images, and scripts. Reloading is manual: saving in the editor does not necessarily refresh the browser tab.

Check that the file is really HTML

If the browser displays the tags as text or opens the file in a text editor, first check the filename and extension. It should end in .html, not .html.txt. Also make sure the file contains HTML markup and was saved as plain text rather than in a word processor’s document format.

Get automatic preview while editing

If you are changing a page repeatedly, an automatic preview can spare you from switching windows and reloading after every save. The right choice depends on whether you want to preview a local project, a short experiment, or a page you are inspecting.

VS Code Integrated Browser

VS Code documents opening an HTML file in its Integrated Browser by right-clicking the file and choosing Open in Integrated Browser. This keeps a browser view inside the editor. VS Code’s Integrated Browser documentation also describes using its Live Preview extension to preview web pages. Extension behavior and command labels can change between VS Code releases, so if you do not see the option, check the current VS Code documentation or the extension’s availability in your installation.

For a project with multiple files, open the project folder in VS Code rather than treating each file as an unrelated document. That makes it easier to work with linked stylesheets, scripts, and images using their project-relative paths. Save your changes and use the preview’s refresh or live-preview behavior offered by your installed setup.

CodePen Live View

For a small snippet or shareable demo, CodePen’s Live View automatically updates its preview as you edit in the CodePen Editor. It is convenient when you want to experiment without first creating a local project. A hosted scratchpad is not the same as previewing all the files and environment of a complete local application; use your project’s own setup when the result depends on local assets, modules, or server behavior.

Choose the preview method that fits your work

Method Setup Refresh Best fit Sharing and saved changes
Open an .html file directly Save a file and open it in a browser Manual reload after saving A single, self-contained local page Local file; edits are made in the source file
VS Code Integrated Browser or Live Preview Open a file or project in VS Code; Live Preview is an extension Depends on the preview setup; Live Preview is intended for previewing web pages An editor-centered workflow for local work Work from the project files; not a public share link by itself
CodePen Live View Enter code in the CodePen Editor Automatic as you edit Snippets, experiments, and demos Useful for sharing a hosted demo
Browser DevTools Open DevTools on a page that is already loaded Immediate visual feedback for live DOM or style edits Inspecting a rendered page or trying a quick change Edits are generally experiments unless you configure a persistence workflow such as Chrome Workspaces

For a one-file lesson, start with direct opening. For repeated edits in a local project, use an editor preview. For a quick demo that you want to share, use a hosted scratchpad. For questions about what a page is actually rendering, use DevTools.

Preview a project that needs a local server

Opening a file directly gives the browser a file:// URL, but it is not a local web server. Some pages depend on requests, JavaScript modules, or server-side behavior that may not work as expected from a file URL. If the page relies on those features, run it using the development server appropriate to that project and open the server’s local HTTP address in your browser.

The exact command and address depend on the framework or project; there is no one universal server command for every HTML folder. Follow the project’s own setup instructions rather than assuming that opening index.html directly reproduces the server environment. A server-based preview is also the better way to test behavior that requires HTTP requests before deploying the page.

Inspect or experiment with a page using DevTools

DevTools shows the page as rendered at runtime, including the DOM and styles after the browser has processed the page. It is useful when you want to understand why an element looks a certain way or test a CSS or HTML change without first editing the original file.

  1. Open the page in your browser.
  2. Open the browser’s developer tools. The panel is called Inspector in Firefox and Elements in Chrome, Edge, and Safari.
  3. Select an element in the DOM tree, then inspect or temporarily edit its markup and CSS. Changes are reflected in the browser viewport so you can see their effect.
  4. When you find a change you want to keep, make it in the project’s source file and save it, unless you have explicitly set up a workflow that persists DevTools edits.

A change made in the ordinary Elements or Inspector panel is not automatically a change to the original source file. Chrome DevTools offers Workspaces to connect edits made in DevTools with files on disk. Without a persistence workflow, treat DevTools edits as temporary experiments; reloading can discard them.

If the page is already available at a public URL, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot without your setting up a browser capture script. It is a screenshot API, not a replacement for a local interactive preview: use it to capture a reachable page, not to open an unhosted file on your computer. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.

For example, save this cURL request as shot.webp, changing the target URL to the page you want to capture:

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Troubleshoot a preview that does not look right

The browser shows the HTML tags instead of a page

  • Confirm the file ends in .html and was saved as plain text.
  • Check that you opened the HTML file in a browser, not the editor’s text view.
  • For a plain-text editor, make sure it did not silently save the filename as index.html.txt.

CSS or JavaScript is missing

  • Check that the stylesheet or script file is in the location your HTML expects.
  • Verify the relative path and filename, including capitalization. A link such as css/site.css is resolved relative to the HTML file’s location.
  • Save the linked file and reload the browser. If the project relies on server behavior or module loading, try its local development server rather than file://.

An image does not appear

  • Check the image’s relative path from the HTML file and verify the filename and extension.
  • Confirm the image is actually in the project folder you opened, not in a similarly named folder elsewhere.
  • Reload after correcting the path. If the image is hosted remotely, check that its URL is valid and reachable.

Saving does not update the browser

  • With direct file opening, reload the tab after saving.
  • With an editor preview, confirm the preview is pointed at the file or project you are editing and use its refresh behavior if needed.
  • With CodePen Live View, make sure you are editing the CodePen Editor associated with the preview.

DevTools changes disappear

That is expected for ordinary in-browser experiments: they do not automatically update the source file. Copy the successful change into your project and save it, or configure a persistence workflow such as Chrome Workspaces if you specifically want DevTools edits connected to local files.

Frequently asked questions

Can I preview HTML without installing software?

Yes. Save a plain-text file with an .html extension and open it in an installed browser. You only need an editor capable of saving plain text to make changes.

Can I preview HTML on a phone?

The simplest direct-file instructions here assume a computer with a file manager and desktop browser. For a phone, use an editor or coding environment that provides its own preview, or make the page available at a URL you can open on the device. The exact steps depend on the editor and device.

What is the difference between HTML source and the DOM?

The source is the text in your saved file. The DOM is the browser’s runtime representation of the page, which scripts and browser parsing can affect. DevTools’ Elements or Inspector panel is for examining that rendered representation; use your source files when you want to make durable project edits.
