In the WordPress Block Editor, open View in the top toolbar and select Preview in new tab. Check the post in the front-end tab, and use the editor’s Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile widths to inspect its layout. After you make changes, save them and refresh the preview tab. To share an unpublished post with someone outside your site, use a temporary preview link such as the one offered by the Public Post Preview plugin; the built-in preview is not a permanent public link.
Preview a post in the WordPress Block Editor
The Block Editor offers two useful ways to inspect a post. Its responsive canvas gives you a quick view of how the content fits at different widths. Preview in new tab opens the post on the front end, where you can see how your active theme presents it. Use both when layout matters: the canvas is convenient for width checks, while the front-end tab shows the site’s presentation of the post. - Open the draft in the Block Editor.
- Select View in the top toolbar.
- Choose Preview in new tab. WordPress opens a front-end view of the current post in a separate browser tab.
- Return to the editor and check the responsive preview widths: Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile. You can also resize the canvas manually between presets.
- Review the new tab for theme-dependent details such as the post layout, typography, and surrounding page presentation.
- If you edit the post, save your changes, switch back to the preview tab, and refresh it. An already-open preview does not automatically show later edits.
For the current saved version, treat the editor as the source of truth: make the change there, save it, then reload the preview. WordPress.com’s guide also advises saving draft edits and refreshing the preview tab: Preview your content (last reviewed August 11, 2026).

What to check at each width
- Desktop: Check the title, featured image, content column, sidebars if present, and spacing around the post.
- Tablet: Look for text or images that become cramped, columns that stack unexpectedly, or navigation that changes shape.
- Mobile: Check that headings, links, images, and embedded content fit the narrower layout and remain readable.
These are visual checks, not a guarantee that every screen, browser, or logged-in state will look identical. Your theme and site configuration determine how post content is displayed.

Share an unpublished post with someone else
The normal preview workflow is best for you or a teammate who can access the site and the post. It does not, by itself, create a permanent public URL for an unpublished draft. If an outside reviewer has no WordPress account, a temporary anonymous preview link may be more appropriate than asking them to log in or publishing early.
Use Public Post Preview for an expiring review link
Public Post Preview is an optional WordPress plugin, not a built-in Block Editor button. Its listing describes enabling anonymous preview for a saved, non-published post from the document settings. The plugin’s FAQ says its link is valid for 48 hours by default; treat it as temporary, and check the listing for current details before relying on it.
- Install and activate Public Post Preview if your site permits plugins.
- Save the post without publishing it.
- Open the post’s document settings and enable the plugin’s public preview option.
- Copy the generated preview URL and send it to the reviewer.
- Ask the reviewer to open it before it expires. If the content changes, save the post and check whether the reviewer needs a refreshed link or page reload.
The link is a way to show a particular unpublished post to someone without a site account; it is not a substitute for access control on the rest of your WordPress site. Avoid sharing it beyond the intended reviewer, and remember that an expiring link can stop working after its validity period.

Choose the route that fits the reviewer

Preview in the Classic Editor
If you do not see the Block Editor’s View menu, you may be using the Classic Editor. Open the post and select Preview in the Publish box. The WordPress Classic Editor guide documents that route: Write posts (Classic Editor). To inspect later edits, save them and open or refresh the preview again.
Preview is not the same as publishing
Opening a preview does not mean you have published the post. WordPress tracks post status separately: a draft is unpublished; pending content awaits a user with publishing capability; scheduled content is set to publish at a future time; private content has restricted visibility; and published content is live. Do not publish a draft early just to let someone see it. A teammate’s ability to review, edit, or publish depends on their role and capabilities as well as the post’s status. Troubleshooting a WordPress post preview
The View menu or preview option is missing
Confirm that you are editing the post in the Block Editor and that the editor’s top toolbar is visible. If the interface instead shows a Publish box with a Preview button, use the Classic Editor route. WordPress.com-hosted sites and self-hosted WordPress sites can differ in available settings, so follow the labels actually shown in your editor.

The preview does not show my latest changes
Save the edited post, then refresh the preview tab. A preview you opened before your latest save can display an earlier version. If you still see old content, confirm that the correct post is open and reload after saving once more.

The canvas is useful for responsive width checks, but the front-end tab shows the post within your site’s theme. Compare the front-end result at the relevant window size; do not assume that the canvas reproduces every theme or site-level detail.
The outside reviewer cannot open the link
Check whether the link was generated by Public Post Preview, whether the post was saved, and whether the plugin’s default 48-hour window has passed. Generate or share a current link when necessary. If your site does not allow plugins, use an account-based review route instead of making the post public just to share it.

A teammate can view the post but cannot publish it
Preview access and publishing authority are separate. Check the user’s WordPress role and capabilities, and check whether the post is a draft, pending, scheduled, private, or published. WordPress documents post states and revisions separately; revision history can help restore or compare saved edits, but it is not required to open a preview. See WordPress Revisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a screenshot of a preview instead of sharing the preview itself?
Yes, if an image or PDF is all the reviewer needs. A screenshot is a fixed capture, not an interactive post preview, and it does not let the reviewer inspect links or responsive behavior.
Can a screenshot API open a draft that requires a WordPress login?
Only if the capture request can reach and authenticate to that page. A screenshot API does not bypass WordPress permissions; use a reachable preview link or an authorized setup.
