To preview a Twitter post before it is public, now use the X composer: enter your text, attach media, and inspect everything before selecting Post. X provides a play-button preview for attached videos and a draft-review view for threads. Its Undo Post setting can provide a short post-send opportunity to change a post, but that is not the same as a normal pre-publication preview.
What “preview” means on Twitter (X)
Twitter is now called X, although many people still use the older name. X does not present every ordinary text post in a separate, browser-style preview screen. Instead, the composer itself is the pre-publication review area. You can read the text, inspect attachments, and make changes before pressing Post. X’s official posting guide covers composing on the web, iOS, and Android: How to Post.
There are additional controls for particular content types. Videos have a documented play-button preview, and threads can be saved as drafts and reopened in a review view. Scheduling changes when a post is published; it does not create a rendered preview.
Preview a regular post before publishing
- Open the composer. On the X website, select the compose button. In the mobile app, tap the compose button to start a post.
- Write the complete text. Check spelling, punctuation, links, mentions, hashtags, and line breaks. A link can look correct in the editor while pointing to the wrong destination, so activate or otherwise verify it before posting when your interface allows.
- Add media. Attach the photo, GIF, or video you intend to publish. Wait for the upload and processing indicators to finish; an attachment that is still processing may not be available to viewers in the same way.
- Review the audience and options. Check any reply, visibility, or interaction settings shown in the composer. Make sure you are using the intended account if you manage more than one.
- Read it once as a stranger would. Look for an accidental extra character, an incomplete sentence, an unintended mention, a missing alt-text description, or a sensitive detail in the image.
- Select Post only after the final check. Until you confirm, the composition remains an unsent draft in the composer rather than a public post.
X’s interface labels and placement can change between desktop, iOS, and Android. The underlying process is the same: compose, inspect, edit, and only then publish.

A practical pre-send checklist
- Does the text say exactly what you mean, including dates, numbers, and negations?
- Are mentions attached to the intended accounts?
- Do links use the correct page and a secure
httpsaddress? - Are the correct image, GIF, or video files attached and in the intended order?
- Does the media reveal private information such as an email address, location, browser tab, or notification?
- Have you checked the post from the perspective of someone who does not know the surrounding context?
Preview an attached video
X documents a specific preview control for video. After attaching a video, tap or click its play button in the composer to watch it before publishing. X says you can preview the video and make additional edits before sharing it; see How to share and watch videos on X.
Use this check to confirm the opening frame, audio, crop, captions, and the point at which the video ends. This documented play control applies to the attached video; it should not be interpreted as a promise that every text-and-image post receives a separate, fully rendered preview page.
Preview a thread before publishing
A thread needs a different review flow because several posts must be checked in sequence.
- Start a post and use the control to add additional posts to the thread.
- Write each post and attach media to the post where it belongs.
- Save the thread as a draft rather than publishing it immediately.
- Open the draft and select View (number of) posts, replacing “number” with the count shown by X.
- Read the posts from first to last. Check that each continuation makes sense, that media is attached to the correct post, and that no post is missing a word or link.
- Edit the draft if needed, save it again, and publish only when the entire sequence is correct.
X describes this workflow in How to create a thread on X. A draft review is especially useful for checking numbering, quotations, code blocks, and references that depend on the previous post.

What Undo Post can—and cannot—do
X’s Undo Post feature is a short post-send opportunity to preview and change a post before it becomes public. The X Help Center states: “Undo post offers the ability to preview and change posts before they’re public.” Read About Edit Post for the current behavior and settings.
This is not a normal pre-send preview. You have already selected the send action, and the opportunity lasts only for the configured undo period. If the window expires, the post can become public without another confirmation. Availability and settings may vary, so do not treat Undo Post as a substitute for checking the composer first. It is also distinct from editing a post after publication: the undo flow is intended to stop or change the post before it is public.
Scheduling is delayed publication, not preview
If you need a post to appear later, X Pro documents choosing a future date and time in its scheduling workflow: How to use X Pro. X Ads also documents scheduling and managing draft and scheduled posts. Its guide says a scheduled post is not discoverable on X or by data partners until the scheduled time: Scheduled Posts.
Scheduling gives you time to revisit the draft before its release, but it does not automatically show how the post will look in a public timeline. Open the scheduled item and review its text and attachments yourself. If you need a visual check of a public page after publication, capture that page separately; a scheduled draft is not publicly reachable for a screenshot service to render.

Troubleshooting preview problems
The video will not play in the composer
Wait until the upload and processing indicators finish, then try the play control again. If it still fails, remove and reattach the file or try the current X app or website in a stable connection. Do not publish a video you have not been able to inspect; a successful upload indicator alone does not confirm that the final playback is correct.
The thread review does not show every post
Return to the saved draft and verify that each additional post was added before saving. Open View (number of) posts again and count the entries manually. If a post is missing, add it to the draft and save before publishing.
I posted too soon
If Undo Post is enabled and its window is still visible, use it immediately and correct the composition. If the window has ended, the post may already be public; the available options then depend on the current X account and product features. Do not assume that an edit-after-publication option is identical to Undo Post.
The scheduled post looks different from the draft
Open the scheduled item itself, not only the original composition, and verify the final text, links, media, and selected time zone. Scheduling delays release but does not provide a separate visual mock-up. If timing is critical, allow time for one more manual review before the scheduled time.

The controls are missing
Feature availability can differ by platform, account, subscription, and rollout. Update the app, try the web composer, and consult the relevant X Help Center page linked above. Labels can also change as X updates the interface.

Frequently overlooked checks
- Mentions: confirm that an autocomplete selection did not attach the wrong account.
- Links: check the destination, not just the visible text.
- Images: inspect corners and background areas where personal information can appear.
- Threads: read the sequence without relying on your memory of what you intended to write.
- Timing: treat a scheduled time as a release deadline and perform a final review before it arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does X provide a preview button for every post?
No separate universal preview screen is documented for every post. The composer is the normal place to inspect text and attachments; X specifically documents a play-button preview for videos and a draft-review view for threads.
Can I preview a private draft with a screenshot API?
Not ordinarily. A private draft is inside your authenticated X composer, while a screenshot API receives a URL. Use the X composer or thread draft review for unpublished content.
Is Undo Post the same as editing a public post?
No. Undo Post is a short opportunity to change a post before it becomes public. Editing an already public post is a separate feature and workflow.
