You can discourage casual copying in WordPress by installing a content-protection plugin that disables text selection, intercepts common copy shortcuts, and optionally blocks the browser context menu. These controls are deterrents, not a security barrier: visitors can still retrieve published content by other methods or capture it on screen. Apply protection only where it makes sense and test every interactive element after enabling it.

What WordPress copy protection can—and cannot—do

Plugins such as Sandya Copy Protection and WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click use CSS and JavaScript to make routine copying harder. Depending on the plugin and its settings, this can include:

  • Preventing visitors from selecting text.
  • Intercepting common copy-related keyboard shortcuts.
  • Disabling the right-click context menu.
  • Preventing image dragging.

That does not make published text impossible to copy. The Sandya listing describes its protection as a deterrent, and WordPress.org guidance for Disable Right Click & Content Copy Protection notes that websites cannot block operating-system screen capture. Browser tools, cached content, feeds, reader modes, screenshots, and manual retyping can also bypass front-end restrictions.

Choose the least disruptive protection

Approach What it changes Best use Important limitation
Plugin deterrent CSS/JavaScript controls for selection, shortcuts, context menu, and sometimes image dragging Site owners who need a reversible, dashboard-managed setting Not a guarantee against copying or screen capture
Selective plugin scope Protection limited to chosen posts, pages, or elements when the plugin supports those exceptions Sites with a small set of high-value pages Available scope and exception controls vary by plugin listing and version
Unprotected content areas Forms, inputs, dialogs, buttons, code examples, and other interactive or copy-dependent elements remain usable Documentation, tutorials, support pages, and any page where visitors need to copy text Requires checking the actual rendered page after activation

There is no evidence in the available listings for an independently tested “best” plugin, universal browser compatibility, or measured performance advantage. Compare the current WordPress.org listings for documented scope, controls, exceptions, and compatibility information before choosing.

Install and configure a protection plugin

  1. Back up first. Create a current backup or make the change on a staging site so you can restore the previous behavior if forms, menus, or editor-generated components stop working.
  2. Open the plugin installer. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for a copy-protection plugin, and open its WordPress.org listing from the search result. Review the description, update history, tested WordPress information, and support activity rather than assuming that similarly named plugins behave the same way.
  3. Install and activate. Select the plugin you chose, click Install Now, then Activate. The plugin may add a settings screen under Settings, Tools, or its own dashboard menu; use the location shown by that plugin.
  4. Enable only the controls you need. Start with the narrowest option, such as disabling selection on a specific content area. Add shortcut or context-menu blocking only if casual copying remains a problem. If the plugin offers page, post, or element exceptions, exclude pages where copying is part of the user experience.
  5. Save and test while logged out. Open the affected URL in a private window or a separate browser profile. Check normal selection, right-click behavior, keyboard shortcuts, image dragging, scrolling, links, menus, and mobile touch interaction.
  6. Test interactive controls. Submit every form, focus each input and textarea, open dialogs, use review controls, click buttons, and copy any code or citation examples that visitors are expected to reuse. A WordPress.org listing for Simple Content Copy Protection & No Right Click records a fix intended to keep selection blocking from interfering with form fields and dialog/review controls; treat that as a reminder to verify your own site, not as a guarantee for every theme or plugin combination.
  7. Check key templates and devices. Test a post, page, archive, search result, navigation menu, checkout or account screen (if present), and at least one phone-sized viewport. Clear or bypass caching when testing so you are seeing the new scripts and styles.
  8. Roll back if usability suffers. Deactivate the plugin, or turn off the specific control, if visitors cannot complete a task or copy content you intentionally provide. Then narrow the protected scope instead of blocking the whole site.

Where protection should usually be limited

Protect original articles or artwork selectively

If your goal is to deter casual scraping of a particular article, illustration, or product description, apply the rule to that post, page, or content block when the plugin supports exclusions. Selective coverage preserves normal behavior elsewhere and makes it easier to identify a conflict.

Leave copy-dependent pages usable

Do not block selection on pages containing code snippets, commands, quotations, addresses, reference numbers, form instructions, accessibility information, or text visitors reasonably need to copy. Keep login, account, checkout, search, and support interactions usable as well.

Consider accessibility and assistive workflows

Selection blocking can interfere with reading, annotation, translation, magnification, keyboard workflows, and assistive technology. The reviewed listings do not establish a complete accessibility assessment for these plugins, so evaluate the effect with your audience and remove the restriction if it prevents someone from using the page.

Troubleshoot common failures

A form field will not accept text or cannot be selected

Disable selection blocking for that page or element, then retest the field, validation message, date picker, and submit button. If the plugin has an interactive-element exception, enable it; otherwise exclude the entire form page.

Visitors cannot copy code or a citation

Exclude the article section containing reusable text, or disable the protection on documentation and tutorial pages. A blanket rule is the wrong trade-off when copying is the page’s purpose.

The right-click menu is blocked but copying still occurs

That is expected. Context-menu and shortcut controls deter only common actions. They do not secure text that the browser must deliver to display the page.

The site behaves differently after caching or a theme change

Clear page, browser, and CDN caches, then test while logged out. If the issue returns after a theme or plugin update, narrow the protected scope or deactivate the protection until compatibility is confirmed.

When not to use copy protection

  • Your site publishes documentation, educational material, recipes, code, legal notices, or other content visitors need to reuse.
  • Forms, dialogs, checkout, account pages, or menus are more important than deterring casual copying.
  • You need actual confidentiality or access control. Front-end JavaScript and CSS cannot provide that for content already sent to a visitor’s browser.

For sensitive material, use authentication, authorization, private media storage, and server-side access controls instead of relying on selection or right-click blocking.
