To keep a cookie-consent banner out of a PDF or screenshot, target the banner itself at capture time. For PDFs, a print stylesheet is usually the least disruptive method: Playwright and Puppeteer render PDFs with print CSS by default. For image screenshots, inject a narrowly scoped stylesheet during capture. If you want a PDF styled like the on-screen page, switch to screen media before generating it and verify the resulting layout. Hiding a banner changes only what appears in the capture; it does not record consent.
Choose the method that matches your output
First decide whether you need a PDF or an image. The two formats use different capture paths, and a rule intended for print may not affect a screenshot.
| Output and situation | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PDF, and you can edit the website | Add a targeted @media print rule for the known banner. |
The banner is absent from the PDF while page content remains. |
| PDF of a third-party site | Inject a targeted print rule in your browser automation. | The selector matches the actual page and the PDF retains its content. |
| PDF should resemble the screen | Emulate screen media before creating the PDF. | Screen styling may change layout and backgrounds; inspect the PDF. |
| Image screenshot | Apply a capture-time stylesheet that hides the identified banner. | The rule takes effect at capture time and does not hide unrelated content. |
| Repeated jobs across many sites | Consider a hosted capture service with consent-banner handling or maintain per-site selectors. | Vendor coverage varies; test your target pages. |
There is no universal selector for cookie banners. Inspect the target page, identify the element that actually contains the banner, and test the output on that site.
Find and target the banner, not every overlay
- Open the page in a browser and inspect the visible consent banner with developer tools.
- Identify a selector that refers specifically to the banner, such as its site-specific ID or class. Avoid broad rules that hide every dialog, fixed element, or overlay.
- Check whether the element is inside an iframe or Shadow DOM. Ordinary page selectors may not reach those structures unless the capture tool supports it.
- Apply the rule only to the capture or print context, then open the resulting PDF or image and check both the banner and the underlying page content.
For a site you control, a print-only rule lets the interface remain available during ordinary browsing while excluding it from printed output. For a third-party site, use an injected stylesheet rather than assuming you can change the site’s own CSS.

Playwright’s page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. A targeted print rule can therefore hide a known banner without changing the regular screen appearance. Replace .cookie-banner below with the selector you observed on the page.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.addStyleTag({
content: `@media print {
.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
}`
});
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
await browser.close();
The selector is illustrative, not universal. If the site renders its consent interface late, wait for the page or the relevant element before capturing. If the banner is inside a frame or shadow root, check whether your selector and injected style reach it in your setup.
Use screen styling when that is the intended PDF
If the desired PDF should use screen CSS rather than print CSS, select screen media before calling page.pdf():
await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' });
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
Screen emulation changes the page’s styling context; it is not itself a banner-removal setting. If the banner remains visible, add a targeted capture-time style that applies to the selected media, or use an appropriate site stylesheet. Review the PDF for changed layout, colors, and backgrounds.

Playwright PDF options include paper format or dimensions, margins, background printing, page ranges, and scale. These control page output and pagination; they do not, by themselves, suppress a cookie banner. Choose them after establishing the correct media and banner rule.
Playwright: remove a banner from an image screenshot
For a PNG or other screenshot, use the screenshot style option to apply CSS temporarily at capture time. Playwright documents this option for changing or hiding dynamic elements; its stylesheet can pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames. A narrow selector is still essential.
#1 Best Overall
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true,
style: '.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }'
});
await browser.close();
Use the actual selector from the target page. The stylesheet affects the captured rendering; it does not save a site preference or prove that a visitor made a consent choice.
Puppeteer: remove a banner from a PDF
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() also generates PDFs with print CSS media. Inject a site-specific print rule before generation:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.addStyleTag({

});
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
await browser.close();
To render the PDF with screen media instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). As with Playwright, inspect the result: changing media can change more than the banner, and a guessed selector can leave the banner untouched.
Browser Print or Save as PDF
If you own the site, add a print stylesheet that hides only the consent interface:
@media print {
.cookie-banner {
display: none !important;
}
}
Then use the browser’s ordinary Print or Save as PDF workflow and review the output. For a third-party page whose CSS you cannot edit, use browser developer tools or an automation script to add a targeted rule for that capture. Browser menus and developer-tool workflows differ, so the repeatable option is a script that applies the rule before printing.

Hosted capture for recurring jobs
For recurring captures across sites, a hosted browser service may reduce the amount of browser setup you maintain. Browserless documents a blockConsentModals=true option for its BQL sessions and screenshot, PDF, and other REST endpoints. The vendor says the feature covers most major consent platforms, including OneTrust and Cookiebot, and recommends custom selectors for sites its built-in blocker does not handle. Treat that coverage as a vendor statement, not a guarantee for every site; test your own targets.

ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one API request. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For example, request a PDF of a page:

Appearance is not consent
CSS that hides a banner changes what the capture shows. It does not, by itself, register a visitor’s choice or update the site’s consent-management state. If the goal is to record consent, use the site’s actual controls and follow the requirements that apply to your context; these browser-capture techniques do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
Troubleshooting
- The banner is still in the PDF: Confirm that the selector matches the rendered banner, that the style is added before PDF generation, and that the relevant media is print or screen as intended. Check for a late-loading banner, iframe, or shadow root.
- The banner disappears on screen but not in the PDF: The PDF uses print media by default in Playwright and Puppeteer. Add a print-specific rule or deliberately emulate screen media before creating the PDF.
- The PDF layout changes unexpectedly: Screen media changes the page’s CSS context. Return to print media or use a targeted print rule, then inspect margins, backgrounds, pagination, and page content.
- Content under the banner is missing or shifted: Check whether the rule targets a parent container that also contains page content. Narrow the selector to the banner element and recapture.
- A screenshot ignores the injected style: Confirm that you used Playwright’s screenshot-time
styleoption and supplied the correct selector. For nested frames or Shadow DOM, use a capture method that can reach those elements. - The banner reappears on another site: Consent interfaces use different markup and behavior. Inspect that site’s banner and provide a site-specific selector rather than reusing a selector that only matched another page.
FAQ
Will hiding a cookie banner make the site think I accepted cookies?
No. A CSS rule only changes the rendered capture unless you separately interact with the site’s consent controls and the site’s system records that action.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use the same CSS selector on every website?
Usually not. Selectors depend on each site’s markup, so inspect and verify them on the pages you capture.

Does Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet affect frames and Shadow DOM?
Playwright documents its screenshot style option as applying to Shadow DOM and inner frames. The selector must still identify the banner in the target page.
