Yes. In the Instagram mobile app, you can add an animated GIF beneath a Feed post or Reel by opening the comments, tapping Instagram’s GIF button, and choosing a result from the integrated GIPHY library. This is different from uploading a GIF file from your phone, and the button may not appear on every account, post, or platform.
How to post a GIF comment on Instagram
Meta introduced GIF comments in May 2023. Its documented path is the comment icon, the GIF control, and a selection from GIPHY’s library: Meta’s feature announcement.

- Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android phone and sign in.
- Open the Feed post or Reel where you want to comment.
- Tap the speech-bubble Comment icon.
- Find the comment composer at the bottom of the thread.
- Tap Instagram’s GIF button beside the text field. Do not confuse it with a GIF button on your phone’s keyboard.
- Browse the suggestions or search GIPHY for a reaction, phrase, topic, or creator.
- Tap the GIF you want.
- Instagram normally publishes the GIF immediately; some app versions may not show a separate confirmation step.
Button placement and labels can vary slightly by device, app version, account, or rollout. The same feature is intended for comments on regular posts and Reels.
How to reply to a comment with a GIF
- Open the post’s comment thread.
- Tap Reply beneath the comment.
- Look for the GIF control in the reply composer.
- Tap it, search or browse GIPHY, and select a GIF.
GIF replies are feature-dependent: the control may differ by account, app build, content surface, or staged rollout. If the reply composer has no GIF button, use a text reply or post a GIF as a new comment instead.

Can you upload a GIF from your camera roll?
Usually no—not through Instagram’s native GIF-comment workflow. The comment picker searches the integrated GIPHY library; it is not a Photos or Gallery file attachment control. A GIF saved locally as a .gif generally cannot be selected directly as a comment.
- GIF found with Instagram’s GIF button: supported comment path.
- GIF saved on your phone: not normally attachable as a GIF comment.
- Your own or branded GIF: it might become searchable through GIPHY after submission, approval, and indexing, but availability is not immediate or guaranteed.
GIPHY’s separate Instagram instructions describe converting GIFs to looping MP4 video for Feed posts or Stories, not attaching them to comments: GIPHY’s Instagram sharing guide. Converting a file to MP4 therefore does not create a comment attachment.

Does GIF commenting work on Instagram.com?
Use the iPhone or Android app as the primary method. Current how-to coverage reports that mobile users can post GIF comments, while Instagram’s desktop website may let you view GIF comments without presenting the same posting control: NapoleonCat’s current guide. Treat that as a current compatibility observation rather than a permanent rule. A missing desktop button does not by itself indicate an account restriction.
Why the GIF button is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Switch from a desktop browser to the Instagram mobile app.
- Open a different public post or Reel. The original post may have commenting disabled; Instagram says comments are hidden while commenting is off and restored when it is turned back on: Instagram’s comment settings help.
- Update Instagram in the iOS App Store or Google Play, then force-close and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in, and test a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Check whether the control is missing on one account, one device, or every account and post.
Possible explanations include different app versions, staged account availability, regional or service-side changes, a post-level comment setting, a temporary GIPHY or Instagram problem, moderation systems, or an app bug. These are possibilities, not a single confirmed cause for every missing icon. Installing a random GIF keyboard, pasting a GIPHY URL, changing privacy settings without a reason, or assuming a permanent ban will not restore Instagram’s native control.

Why a selected GIF will not post
If the picker opens but publishing fails, isolate whether the problem affects GIFs only:
- Choose a different suggested GIF and try again.
- Try the same action on another post or Reel.
- Post a short text comment. If text also fails, the issue is with commenting or the service rather than that GIF.
- Close and reopen Instagram, update it, and switch networks.
- Wait and retry if several GIFs or posts fail at once, then use Instagram’s in-app help or problem-reporting option if the issue persists.
Instagram uses GIPHY for the picker, while comment availability and filtering can also affect what appears or publishes. Meta does not document one universal error code or guaranteed fix for every failed GIF comment.

The animation itself may contain words. The GIF picker generally does not provide a way to type a separate caption layered onto that animation. If context is necessary, publish a separate text comment or use text alone.

Remove, report, or hide a GIF comment
Instagram treats a GIF comment as a comment for moderation purposes. The author can remove their own comment through its options; a post owner can manage comments on their post; and anyone can report a comment that violates Instagram’s rules. Instagram says reports are generally anonymous, except intellectual-property reports: Instagram’s comment-reporting help.
Comments can also be affected by automatic filtering, Advanced comment filtering, Hidden Words, or manual hiding. Instagram notes that hidden comments may remain in the comment count and, depending on the method, may be visible only to the account owner and the commenter: Instagram’s hidden-comments help. There is no separate, guaranteed GIF-only moderation path.
The Bottom Line
For the most reliable result, use the updated Instagram app, open the post or Reel’s comments, tap the native GIF button, and choose from GIPHY. If that button is absent, check the platform, comment settings, app version, account availability, and temporary service problems before assuming your account cannot use GIF comments.
