To post a feed photo in 2026, use Instagram’s app on an iPhone or Instagram.com in a browser on Windows or Mac. On iPhone, choose Create or + → Post. On a computer, choose Create → Post → Select from computer. You do not need to transfer a computer photo to your phone or install a third-party app.
Before you post
Have your Instagram login, the original image file, and a reliable internet connection ready. Decide whether you are publishing one photo or a carousel containing multiple photos or videos.
For current image guidance, Meta documents a supported aspect-ratio range of 1.91:1 to 3:4. Instagram preserves photos between 320 and 1,080 pixels wide within that range; images wider than 1,080 pixels may be reduced, while very small images may be enlarged and look less sharp. These are preparation examples, not a requirement to resize every photo manually. Instagram’s preview can also fit or crop the image.

How to post one picture from an iPhone
- Open the Instagram app and tap Create or the + button. Interface labels and button locations can vary by app version and account.
- Choose Post, then select a photo from your iPhone’s Photos library.
- Tap Next. Use the fit or crop control to choose the framing and orientation.
- Apply a filter or use Instagram’s adjustment tools if needed.
- Tap Next again.
- Add a caption. You can also add a location, tag people, invite a collaborator, add accessibility or alt text where offered, and cross-post to connected accounts.
- Review the preview carefully for cropped faces, cut-off text, or important details near the edge.
- Tap Share, or choose the scheduling option if your account is eligible.
If Instagram cannot see the photo
Instagram may have no Photos permission, access only to selected photos, or the image may still be stored in iCloud. Check Instagram’s Photos permission in the iPhone Settings app, grant access to the required image, and reopen the composer. If the picture is in the Files app, save or export it to Photos first. An iCloud photo may need time to download its full-resolution version.
How to post multiple pictures from an iPhone
- Tap Create or + → Post.
- Tap the multiple-selection icon.
- Select the photos or videos in the order they should appear.
- Tap Next, choose the overall crop or orientation, and edit the items if the available controls allow it.
- Rearrange or remove items before continuing.
- Add one caption and location, tag accounts where supported, review the carousel, and tap Share.
Meta currently documents carousels of up to 10 photos and videos. The chosen orientation applies to the carousel as a whole, so prepare the images on matching canvases when possible. After publishing, you can edit the caption, location, and tagged accounts, but you cannot reorder, edit, or delete individual carousel items; deleting the entire post is still possible. How to post a picture from a Windows PC
- Open Instagram in a current browser and sign in.
- Click Create in the left navigation.
- Choose Post.
- Click Select from computer and choose the image in File Explorer.
- Use the crop controls to select Original, Square, Portrait, or Landscape, depending on what your account displays.
- Click Next, apply filters or adjustments if needed, then click Next again.
- Add the caption, location, tags, and accessibility information offered by the composer.
- Click Share.
This is the current documented Instagram web workflow; exact labels may vary as Instagram tests interface changes. A current browser is sufficient—you do not need Instagram’s phone app or a separate desktop publishing program.
How to post a picture from a Mac
The process is the same as on Windows. Open Instagram in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or another supported browser, then use Create → Post → Select from computer. Choose the image through Finder, adjust its crop, add post details, and click Share.

The practical difference is only where the file is stored: Finder on macOS instead of File Explorer on Windows. You do not need to send the photo to your iPhone first.
How to upload a carousel from a PC or Mac
- Choose Create → Post → Select from computer.
- Select up to 10 photos or videos.
- Choose the shared frame and adjust how each item fits.
- Drag items to reorder them or remove unwanted items.
- Continue to editing and post details.
- Add one caption and location, tag accounts where available, and click Share.
Because one overall orientation applies to the carousel, mixed portrait and landscape files may receive unwanted cropping. For the cleanest result, resize or place every image on the same canvas ratio before uploading.

How to schedule an Instagram photo
Native scheduling is documented for professional accounts: Creator and Business. Meta’s current help information says professional accounts can schedule photos, carousels, and Reels in the Instagram mobile app, up to 75 days ahead and with a limit of 25 scheduled posts per day. These limits, features, and labels may vary by account, country, and app version. Some features, including product tagging, collaborations, sponsored posts, and fundraisers, may not work with scheduled content. See Meta’s scheduling guidance.

A personal account can normally publish manually, but native scheduling may not appear. Switching to Creator or Business changes the account type and can affect privacy because professional accounts cannot be private in the same way personal accounts can.
Meta Business Suite
Meta Business Suite is optional, not required for ordinary posting. It is useful when you manage a professional Instagram account connected to a Facebook Page, publish to Facebook and Instagram together, plan a calendar, or manage comments and messages centrally. When a third-party scheduler makes sense
Tools such as Buffer may be worthwhile for several social networks, team approvals, bulk scheduling, platform-specific versions, or cross-network reporting. For an occasional photo on one Instagram account, Instagram’s native tools are usually simpler and avoid another account connection. A design tool such as Adobe Express is useful when you need to create or resize an image, not merely upload a finished photo.
Why Instagram crops the picture
Cropping usually means the image’s aspect ratio falls outside Instagram’s supported range. Use the expand or original-fit control in the preview, crop the image before uploading, or add padding on a canvas whose ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Keep faces and text away from the edges. In a carousel, prepare every image in the same orientation because the frame applies to all items.
Why the upload is stuck or fails
- Weak connection: Switch to reliable Wi-Fi or cellular service and retry.
- Large or problematic carousel: Test one image, then add items back gradually.
- Outdated app or browser: Update Instagram or try a current browser such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge.
- Browser interference: Disable script-blocking extensions, reload Instagram, or try a private window or another browser.
- File issue: Retry with a fresh export from the original image rather than a repeatedly compressed copy.
- Account issue: Check for a temporary posting restriction or a content-policy notice. Log out only after confirming your password and two-factor authentication method.
If the post publishes but is not visible, check the profile grid and feed, confirm that you selected Post rather than Story or Reel, refresh the app, and check whether Instagram shows an account restriction.
Why the picture looks blurry
Start with the original file, export it at up to 1,080 pixels wide, and use a supported ratio. Screenshots, downloaded copies, repeated JPEG exports, very small images, and interrupted uploads can all reduce sharpness. Meta notes that images smaller than the supported quality range may be enlarged and images wider than 1,080 pixels may be reduced; resizing does not restore detail that is already missing.
