Whisky can still run some Windows games on an Apple Silicon Mac, but it is no longer a maintained product. The official project was archived on May 11, 2025; its latest listed release is version 2.3.5 from April 5, 2025, and the project warns that games may stop working as macOS, launchers, or game builds change. For an older or known-compatible title, Whisky remains a useful free experiment. For a game you depend on, especially an online game, a maintained alternative such as CrossOver or a full Windows installation is usually the safer choice.
What Whisky actually does
Whisky is a macOS graphical front end for Wine and Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK). Wine translates Windows application interfaces, while GPTK supplies Apple-oriented graphics and compatibility components. Whisky packages that work into an interface for creating isolated environments called bottles, installing programs, choosing executables, and changing settings.
It does not install a full copy of Windows and is not a conventional virtual machine. Avoid describing a game as running “natively”: Whisky avoids a traditional VM, but Windows code still passes through translation and compatibility layers. Apple documents GPTK primarily as a game-porting and evaluation toolkit, not as a universal consumer gaming platform: Apple Game Porting Toolkit documentation.

Is Whisky still maintained in 2026?
No. Active development ended in 2025, the official repository is read-only, and the project says it will not receive normal ongoing compatibility fixes or Wine updates. The Whisky site now recommends CrossOver. A macOS update, a Steam update, or a new game build can therefore break a setup that previously worked. The original AppleInsider guide, published April 9, 2024, remains useful for learning the interface but should not be treated as a current support promise: AppleInsider’s Whisky guide.
Check these requirements first
- Mac: Apple Silicon (M1 or later). The archived project lists Intel Macs as unsupported for its GPTK workflow.
- macOS: Sonoma 14.0 or later was the project’s stated baseline. That is an archived requirement, not a guarantee for the macOS release you use in 2026.
- Game: A legitimate installer, Steam/Epic/GOG copy, or other licensed Windows version. Whisky does not supply games, licenses, Windows, or DRM workarounds.
- Storage: Leave room for the bottle, installer, game files, shader caches, updates, and saves.
- Expectations: Compatibility is title-specific. Anti-cheat, kernel drivers, unusual launchers, unsupported DirectX features, 32-bit dependencies, VR hardware, and proprietary media systems are common blockers.
Check whether the publisher offers a native Mac version before using a compatibility layer; a native port generally avoids these translation problems.
Install Whisky (the historical workflow)
Because the project is archived, labels or setup behavior may differ from the original guide. The documented process was:

- Download the disk image from getwhisky.app.
- Open the DMG and drag Whisky into
/Applicationson the Mac’s startup disk. The original guide specifically warns that another location may prevent launch. - Open Whisky. If prompted, allow it to install Rosetta and the Game Porting Toolkit.
- If the initial check fails, use Whisky’s setup option to rerun it, then restart the Mac and try again.
- Optionally install the WhiskyCmd command-line tool from Whisky’s menu.
If macOS blocks the app, review its normal privacy and security prompt and re-download only from the official site or archived official repository. Do not broadly disable Gatekeeper.
Create a bottle
- Click Create Bottle.
- Enter a descriptive name, such as the game title.
- Choose a Windows profile. The historical interface offered Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.
- Select a storage location, or accept the default.
A bottle is an isolated Windows-style environment. Its main filesystem includes drive_c, with folders such as Program Files and Program Files (x86). Separate bottles help keep games from interfering with one another and make testing, backup, and removal simpler, although caches and some system components are not necessarily independent.
Install a game
Using an installer
- Put the installer in the bottle’s
drive_c, or select it with Whisky’s Run command. - Run the installer inside that bottle.
- Install to a Windows-style directory inside
drive_c. - After installation, locate the game’s actual main
.exe. - Use Pin Program to create a launcher entry.
Using an already-installed or portable game
Copy the complete game folder into drive_c, normally beneath Program Files or Program Files (x86). Then choose Pin Program, browse to the real executable, name the pin, and select Pin. Copying only an executable often fails because games also need adjacent data, DLLs, redistributables, launchers, or registry entries.

Steam and other launchers
Install and run the launcher inside the bottle when required. The launcher may need its own configuration, while the game itself may work better as a separate pinned executable. Do not assume every Steam game works.
CD or ISO software
Copy the disc contents into drive_c and run the installer there rather than relying on direct optical-media access. A disc image may still require an original disc, valid key, or compatible copy-protection system; use only software you are licensed to use.

Pin and launch the correct executable
- Select the bottle.
- Choose Pin Program.
- Enter a name and browse to the game’s main
.exe. - Select Pin, then double-click the new entry.
Choose the game executable, not an updater, crash reporter, uninstaller, 32-bit helper, or shortcut. If the first pin does not appear, the original guide reports that Refresh can make it visible.

Settings that can affect compatibility
- Windows version: Some installers or games expect a particular Windows profile.
- Retina and scaling: Change rendered resolution and interface size; incorrect values can produce tiny UI, blur, or black screens.
- Metal and DXVK-related options: These alter DirectX translation paths. Neither is a universal fix, so change one setting at a time.
- Winetricks: Can add specific runtimes, fonts, or libraries. Install only components a game requires; random additions can destabilize a bottle.
- Wine Configuration, Registry Editor, and Wine Control Panel: Advanced tools. Back up the bottle and record each change.
- Logs and shader caches: Use Open Logs Folder to preserve diagnostics. File → Clear Shader Caches can help with stale or corrupted shader compilation.
Troubleshoot in a controlled order
- Confirm Apple Silicon, the archived macOS baseline, free storage, and a legitimate game copy.
- Verify that the game—not merely another game in the same genre—has current Wine/GPTK compatibility evidence.
- Check that you are using the correct bottle, executable, working directory, and complete game folder.
- Try a fresh bottle before repeatedly modifying a damaged one.
- Install only required runtimes, then change one graphics or scaling option at a time.
- Clear shader caches when symptoms suggest stale shader compilation.
- Open the logs folder and save logs before making further changes.
- Recheck compatibility after macOS, Steam, launcher, or game updates.
If Whisky will not open
Re-copy it to /Applications, re-download the archived build, and check macOS security prompts. If failure began after a macOS update, treat unsupported maintenance as a likely cause.
If GPTK or Rosetta setup fails
Confirm the Mac architecture and macOS baseline, rerun Whisky’s setup check if available, restart, and try again. A later macOS release may have made the old component incompatible.
If installation succeeds but the game cannot find files
Copy the entire directory, pin the executable inside the bottle, and preserve its relative folders. Launching from the actual installation directory is often important.

If the game shows a black screen or crashes
Test a clean bottle, try the appropriate Windows profile, adjust one graphics option, clear shader caches, and consult title-specific reports. A game that worked before an update may simply have outgrown the archived runtime.
If multiplayer fails
Anti-cheat or protected services may reject compatibility layers. Treat this as a service limitation, not a graphics setting, and never bypass anti-cheat or modify protected files.
When to stop troubleshooting
Whisky is a poor fit when a title requires kernel-level drivers, unsupported anti-cheat, proprietary Windows services, unusual hardware drivers, or consistently crashes in a clean bottle. Also stop when a launcher update repeatedly breaks the environment or performance is unacceptable. “Installs,” “launches,” “renders correctly,” “works online,” and “runs well” are separate outcomes.

Should you use Whisky in 2026?
- Use it cautiously for a legacy or single-player game with current, title-specific evidence and a willingness to maintain an unsupported setup.
- Choose CrossOver when the game matters and you want a maintained Wine-based path; Whisky’s own site recommends it.
- Choose a virtual machine when broad Windows software compatibility matters more than lightweight gaming performance.
- Choose a Windows PC, console, or cloud service for competitive games, strict anti-cheat, or titles with no trustworthy compatibility evidence.
Before installing, confirm: Apple Silicon hardware, a compatible macOS version, adequate storage, a licensed game, a separate bottle, the correct executable, backed-up saves, and acceptance that the archived software can stop working without a fix.
