Pair an Apple Watch Series 4 from the Apple Watch app—not the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings. Before starting, verify that your iPhone, iOS version, watch variant and watchOS version are compatible: Apple lists Series 4 through watchOS 10.6.1, while watchOS 26 starts with Series 6 and newer supported models.

Then turn on the watch, unlock the iPhone, choose Continue in the pairing assistant, scan the watch animation and leave both devices close while synchronization completes.

Check compatibility before pairing

Apple’s compatibility table lists these Series 4 combinations:

Series 4 GPS iPhone 5s or later with iOS 12 or later watchOS 5 through watchOS 10.6.1
Series 4 GPS + Cellular iPhone 6 or later with iOS 12 or later watchOS 5 through watchOS 10.6.1

These are Apple’s listed combinations, not a guarantee that every newer iPhone running the newest iOS will pair. Check the exact model and software on Apple’s compatibility table. As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists watchOS 26 support beginning with Apple Watch Series 6, newer SE models and Ultra models; Series 4 remains capped at watchOS 10.6.1.

Have these ready

  • Apple Watch Series 4 and its magnetic charger.
  • A compatible iPhone connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, with Bluetooth enabled.
  • Your Apple Account email address or phone number and password.
  • The watch passcode, if it already shows a configured watch face.
  • At least 50 percent charge on both devices when transferring to a new iPhone; Apple recommends this for transfer operations.

A watch showing a normal clock face or requesting an existing passcode may still be paired to another iPhone. Use the transfer or unpairing instructions below instead of repeatedly attempting a new pairing.

Pair a Series 4 for the first time

  1. Charge and start the watch. Put it on the charger if needed. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Prepare the iPhone. Unlock it, turn on Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth, and connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  3. Open the pairing assistant. Hold the iPhone near the watch. When the prompt to use the iPhone to set up Apple Watch appears, tap Continue. If no prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app, tap All Watches, then Add Watch or Pair New Watch; wording can vary by iOS version.
  4. Choose the owner. Tap Set Up for Myself.
  5. Scan the animation. Center the moving pattern on the watch inside the iPhone’s viewfinder. Keep the watch and phone steady until pairing completes.
  6. Complete setup. Follow the prompts to accept terms, sign in to your Apple Account, create a watch passcode if wanted, and configure features such as location, notifications and Apple Pay.
  7. Choose your data path. Select Restore from Backup when replacing an iPhone or resetting a watch and a suitable backup exists. Choose Set Up as New Apple Watch for a clean start or when no usable backup is available.
  8. Configure cellular service, if applicable. A GPS + Cellular model may offer activation during setup. You can also do this later in the Apple Watch app.
  9. Wait for synchronization. Keep both devices close, powered and unlocked as needed until the watch reaches its normal watch face and the Apple Watch app shows setup is complete.

Apple documents this camera-based process and its fallback in the Apple Watch setup guide.

If the camera cannot scan the pairing animation

  1. Improve the lighting and clean both the iPhone camera lens and watch display.
  2. Center the animation in the viewfinder and hold the devices steady.
  3. Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually at the bottom of the pairing screen.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions and enter the six-digit code shown on the watch when requested.

Manual pairing is useful when the camera cannot focus, the display is damaged, the animation will not appear or accessibility needs make scanning difficult. Apple describes the six-digit fallback in its secure-pairing documentation.

Move Series 4 to a new iPhone

Transfer is safer than treating an already configured watch as a brand-new device because it preserves more settings and data when a valid backup is available.

  1. Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch as far as their hardware and compatibility allow.
  2. On the old iPhone, enable Health in iCloud if you use iCloud syncing.
  3. Back up the old iPhone. If you use a computer backup, make it encrypted so Health and Activity data can be included.
  4. Set up the new iPhone from the most recent backup.
  5. Keep the watch unlocked, on your wrist or nearby, and close to the new iPhone.
  6. Open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone and follow the transfer prompt.
  7. If the new iPhone instead shows Start Pairing, unpair the watch from the old iPhone, then pair it again and restore the available watch backup or choose Set Up as New Apple Watch.

Apple says an iPhone backup also backs up the Apple Watch. However, iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data; without the original device or an appropriate backup, some Health and Activity content may not be recoverable. See Apple’s new-iPhone transfer guidance and missing-data troubleshooting.

If the watch is already paired to another iPhone

When the old iPhone is available

  1. On the old iPhone, open Apple Watch.
  2. Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
  3. Tap the information button next to the watch.
  4. Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm.
  5. Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
  6. Enter the Apple Account password when asked to disable Activation Lock.
  7. Pair the erased watch with the new iPhone.

Unpairing from the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. Apple’s exact flow is in its unpairing guide.

When the old iPhone is unavailable

  1. On the watch, open Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Enter the watch passcode if requested and confirm.

This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account previously linked to it will still be required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bought the Series 4 used? Stop at Activation Lock

An Activation Lock screen means the watch is still linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. The buyer cannot legitimately bypass it. Ask the seller to unpair the watch correctly or remove it from their account through Find My, then start setup again. A factory reset by itself is not enough. Apple explains the requirement for the linked account credentials in its Activation Lock support article.

Cellular setup and limitations

On a Series 4 GPS + Cellular model, activation may appear during setup or later under the Apple Watch app’s cellular settings. Apple normally requires the iPhone and watch to use the same carrier, but support depends on country, carrier, account type and the particular plan. A cellular-capable watch therefore does not guarantee that service can be activated or transferred.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No pairing prompt appears

  • Unlock the iPhone and place it immediately beside the watch.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is on and Wi-Fi or cellular data is working.
  • Open Apple Watch > All Watches > Add Watch manually.
  • Restart both devices.
  • Check that the watch is not already paired or Activation Locked.

The iPhone cannot connect

  • Confirm the iPhone model, iOS version, watch variant and watchOS version meet Apple’s compatibility requirements.
  • Restart both devices and try again.
  • Update software where possible.
  • If the watch is stuck in an earlier pairing state, erase it and pair again—but remember that direct erasure leaves Activation Lock active.

Apple’s troubleshooting sequence starts with checking whether the watch is already paired and restarting both devices; see Apple’s pairing troubleshooting page.

The watch is stuck on the Apple logo or pairing screen

This recovery erases the watch:

  1. Press and hold the Digital Crown and side button together until the watch restarts.
  2. Release both controls.
  3. Firmly press the display or press and hold the Digital Crown when prompted.
  4. Tap Reset, then pair the watch again.

Use this only when you accept the data loss; Apple documents the procedure in its transfer and recovery guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The iPhone asks for an unknown passcode

The watch is usually still configured or protected by its existing pairing. Do not guess repeatedly. Erase it, then provide the linked Apple Account credentials if Activation Lock appears.

Pairing Not Complete or missing Health data

  • Keep the devices together and powered while synchronization continues.
  • Confirm Health is enabled in iCloud on the relevant iPhones.
  • Restore from the correct watch or iPhone backup.
  • Use an encrypted computer backup when transferring Health and Activity data through a computer.
  • Allow time for iCloud data to repopulate.
  • Remember that Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud.

Cellular activation fails

  • Verify that the watch is the GPS + Cellular model.
  • Check carrier and regional support for Apple Watch Series 4.
  • Confirm the iPhone and watch meet the carrier’s plan and account requirements.
  • Try activation later in the Apple Watch app if setup was completed without cellular service.

Final setup checklist

  • The watch appears in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app.
  • The watch reaches its normal face without a pairing or Activation Lock prompt.
  • Synchronization has finished.
  • Your Apple Account is signed in.
  • A passcode is configured if you want one.
  • The cellular plan is active, if your model and carrier support it.
  • Health and Activity history has appeared, subject to the backup limitations above.
