To optimize images in WordPress, remove files the page does not need, resize the rest for their actual display contexts, compress them at an acceptable visual quality, and deliver an appropriate responsive size and format. Then compare the same pages before and after. Image optimization can reduce page weight, but it cannot guarantee a particular speed gain: results depend on the images used and the rest of the site.
1. Find images that are too large or unnecessary
Start with the page, not the compression setting. Remove decorative or redundant images that do not serve the page. For each remaining image, compare its intrinsic pixel dimensions with how it appears on the page and the device sizes you support. A very large source image can still waste bytes after compression if visitors only see it at a much smaller size.
WordPress advises site owners to optimize image files and choose a suitable format and compression level. Its performance guidance also recommends measuring site performance and considering the wider page, rather than treating images as the only possible cause of slow loading: WordPress optimization guidance.
2. Choose a suitable format and compression level
Choose based on the image’s content, transparency needs, and acceptable appearance at its intended display size. Photographs often tolerate lossy compression, but inspect the result for visible artifacts. For logos, interface graphics, and other images with transparency or crisp edges, check that compression preserves those details.

When WebP may help
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. Google describes it as a format designed to produce smaller web images: Google’s WebP documentation. Google’s published comparisons report lossless WebP images 26% smaller than PNGs and lossy WebP images 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent quality. These are format-documentation comparisons, not a promise of the same savings for a particular WordPress site.
The WordPress Theme Handbook says WebP images are around 30% smaller on average than JPEG or PNG equivalents, but that general figure is not a measurement of your own media library: WordPress Theme Handbook: Images. Google also notes that images account for up to 60–65% of bytes on most web pages; that broad figure does not establish how much of any specific page’s weight comes from images: Google image compression guidance.

3. Make sure WordPress serves the right size
WordPress can generate smaller image sub-sizes registered by the theme or site. The Theme Handbook says those sub-sizes use the original upload format by default, so uploading a WebP or converting an original does not by itself prove that every image reference, thumbnail, or cached file will use a modern format.

Check the public page’s markup and browser network requests. Confirm that the browser receives an image with dimensions appropriate to its display context, rather than an unnecessarily large original. Responsive image markup can offer different candidates for different screen sizes, but verify what is actually requested. Format conversion alone cannot compensate for oversized dimensions.

4. Choose one compatible optimization workflow
Image processing may happen during upload, through a plugin, or through a delivery service or CDN. Before enabling a workflow, check whether it handles existing media or only new uploads, whether it retains originals or fallbacks when needed, how it creates sub-sizes, and whether your host supports its processing and delivery requirements. Avoid configuring multiple plugins to rewrite or serve the same formats; overlapping rules can produce conflicts or make it unclear which file visitors receive.
Plugin-based optimization
The WordPress.org listing for EWWW Image Optimizer describes image optimization options, WebP and AVIF conversion, resizing, lazy loading, responsive image support, and CDN delivery features. These are capabilities stated in the plugin listing, not independent performance-test results. Check the current listing and your host’s configuration to confirm which features apply to your setup.

WordPress 7.1 upload processing
WordPress developer documentation describes client-side media processing as enabled by default in WordPress 7.1 for supported browsers, with server-side processing as a fallback. The documented upload workflow can compress, resize, crop, convert formats, rotate, and generate thumbnails in the browser: WordPress client-side media processing documentation.
A WordPress Core announcement dated 2026-07-22 reports JPEG reductions of about 15% with MozJPEG-like encoding in that implementation. That result is specific to the described implementation and is not a universal saving expected for every upload. Upload processing also does not establish that every image on a published page will be delivered at an optimal size or format: check the resulting page and network requests.

5. Measure whether the changes helped
- Record a baseline. Choose representative pages and measure them with browser developer tools or an online page benchmark, as recommended by WordPress performance guidance.
- Apply the image changes. Remove unneeded files, resize sources or outputs for their display contexts, and adjust compression or delivery settings.
- Measure the same pages again. Keep conditions reasonably consistent so the comparison is useful.
- Inspect image requests as well as the overall result. Compare transferred image bytes and dimensions, then check the page-level performance result.
- Investigate mixed results. If image bytes fell but the overall page result did not improve, other resources or bottlenecks may be controlling the measurement.
Do not claim a speed improvement without measurements. Image optimization is one part of page performance, and its effect depends on what the page loads and what else is limiting it.
