Ubuntu’s GNOME file manager is usually labeled Files, though its underlying name is Nautilus. To work with a protected folder, install Ubuntu’s nautilus-admin extension and use its Open as Administrator action. For occasional browsing, you can also try the admin:/// location in Files. Both approaches elevate access for a specific task; avoid launching the whole file manager with ordinary sudo.

Recommended: open a protected folder with nautilus-admin

nautilus-admin is an optional Ubuntu-packaged Nautilus extension that adds administrative actions. Ubuntu’s package index lists it in the universe repository for Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 25.10, and 26.04 LTS; package availability depends on your enabled repositories. See the Ubuntu package listing. You need Ubuntu Desktop with Files/Nautilus, an account permitted to perform administrative actions, a terminal, configured package repositories, and an active graphical session with a PolicyKit authentication agent.

  1. Open Terminal and refresh the package index:

    sudo apt update

    This downloads current package metadata.

  2. Install the extension:

    sudo apt install nautilus-admin
  3. Restart Files so it loads the extension:

    nautilus -q

Then reopen Files from the application launcher. If the existing process does not close or the menu remains absent, log out and back in, or reboot; avoid abruptly terminating Files while it may be handling an operation.

  4. In Files, browse to the parent directory of the protected folder, right-click that folder, and choose Open as Administrator. Authenticate when prompted. The extension opens the selected folder in a new Nautilus window with root privileges, according to its Ubuntu Launchpad description.

  5. Make only the necessary change, then close the elevated window.

Exact wording and restart behavior can vary by Nautilus and GNOME release. The extension’s folder action is distinct from its separate Edit as Administrator integration, which the package description associates with Gedit; do not assume that right-clicking any file offers the same folder-opening action.

Browse with admin:/// without installing the extension

On Ubuntu/GNOME versions where the administrative GVfs location is available, Files can browse with elevated filesystem access through a PolicyKit-mediated backend. The normal Files process remains associated with your user rather than opening a second desktop file-manager process as root. Community documentation describes this workflow, but the exact controls vary by release; see the Ask Ubuntu instructions.

  1. Open Files normally and select Other Locations.

  2. Find the server-address field, enter admin:///, then press Enter or choose Connect.

  3. Authenticate when prompted and navigate to the required location. A specific path such as admin:///etc can often be entered directly.

If the address field or administrative location is unavailable, use the extension method if supported by your installation, or make the specific change from a terminal. This interface is not guaranteed across Ubuntu flavors, derivatives, remote sessions, or GNOME releases.

For one protected file, elevate only the edit

If you need to change a single configuration file, a narrowly scoped terminal command is often safer than keeping a privileged file manager open:

sudoedit /etc/example.conf

sudoedit opens the file for editing using the configured editor while arranging the privileged write. If you prefer Nano, use:

sudo nano /etc/example.conf

Replace the example path with the real file. Avoid defaulting to commands such as sudo gedit or sudo gnome-text-editor; graphical applications run as root can create or alter files in your home directory with root ownership.

Why not run sudo nautilus?

Do not use sudo nautilus as the usual solution. Ubuntu warns that running graphical applications directly with ordinary sudo can change ownership or permissions in the user’s home environment. Root-owned files there can later prevent ordinary applications from saving settings or documents. Ubuntu’s guidance also identifies old gksu/gksudo instructions as obsolete on modern Ubuntu: Ubuntu RootSudo documentation.

pkexec nautilus is not a universal replacement. PolicyKit’s pkexec runs a program as another user (root by default), but its default environment is deliberately restricted and normally does not pass graphical variables such as $DISPLAY and $XAUTHORITY. Its success depends on the application, session, and policy configuration; see the Ubuntu pkexec manual. This is especially relevant on Wayland, remote desktop, and other sessions whose graphical environment or authentication agent may differ.

Check that access worked—and that the result is right

  • Confirm that the expected new administrative window opened, or that the admin:/// connection authenticated.

  • For a harmless check, use a temporary file in a noncritical test directory rather than changing an important system file.

  • After the real operation, verify the file’s intended owner and permissions. Elevated access does not mean ownership should be changed permanently.

  • Close the privileged window as soon as the task is complete. Avoid using it for ordinary home-directory browsing, downloads, or launching applications.

Troubleshooting

APT cannot find nautilus-admin

The package may be unavailable because universe is disabled, package lists are stale, the system is not Ubuntu, or the installation lacks GNOME Files. On standard Ubuntu releases using the usual repository layout, enable the component and retry:

sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nautilus-admin

On a derivative, check its repository configuration rather than assuming Ubuntu’s repository command applies.

The context-menu action does not appear

Run nautilus -q, then reopen Files. If needed, log out and back in or reboot. Check whether the package is installed and available:

apt policy nautilus-admin

Also confirm that the actual file manager is Nautilus and consider extension compatibility with your installed Nautilus version. If installation was interrupted, reinstalling the package may help. The package action is for folders; its separate file-editing integration depends on the associated editor.

Authentication fails or no prompt appears

The account may not be authorized for administrative actions, the password may be incorrect, or the session may lack an active PolicyKit authentication agent. Headless and remote sessions can behave differently. Ubuntu’s sudo model generally authenticates an authorized user rather than requiring a separately enabled root password; see Ubuntu’s explanation of RootSudo.

Permission denied persists after elevation

Elevation does not override every restriction. Check whether the filesystem is mounted read-only and whether the target is a symbolic link to a differently restricted location. Network or FUSE filesystems, filesystem errors, AppArmor or other mandatory access controls, and backend limitations can also prevent an operation. Diagnose the mount and the actual target before changing ownership or permissions.

A file in your home directory is now owned by root

An elevated GUI operation can leave files in the user’s home directory owned by root, which can stop ordinary applications from saving them. Identify the specific affected path and inspect its ownership before repairing it. Do not run a blanket recursive chown on the whole home directory: it can undo intentional ownership, ACLs, or special-directory settings.
