Fastest method: press the Windows key, type Word, and press Enter. The same method opens Excel, PowerPoint, Notepad, Calculator, Paint, Settings, File Explorer, and other installed Windows apps.
For repeated use, pin Word to the taskbar and press Windows plus its taskbar position number. There is no universal Ctrl + Alt + W shortcut that opens Word on every PC.
What “open an app with a shortcut” can mean
These actions are related but not identical:
- Launch: start Word when it is closed.
- Switch: bring an already-running Word window to the foreground.
- Open a new instance: start another Word window, when supported.
- Open a document: start Word and load a particular
.docxfile.
The shortcut you choose determines which of these happens. Windows may activate an existing window instead of opening another one.
1. Open Word with Start search
This is the best option for most users because it requires no setup.

- Press the Windows key.
- Type Word.
- If necessary, select the desktop Microsoft Word result rather than a web result.
- Press Enter.
Use the same steps for any installed app. If Word for the web appears instead of desktop Word, the desktop application may not be installed, or Windows may be showing a browser shortcut.
2. Use a taskbar number shortcut
Windows can launch or switch to an app pinned to a numbered taskbar position. For example, if Word is the third pinned app, press Windows + 3.
- Pin Word to the taskbar.
- Count pinned app icons from left to right.
- Press Windows plus the app’s number.
For a new instance, Microsoft documents Windows + Shift + the app number. For example, try Windows + Shift + 3 for the third pinned app. The result can depend on the application.

Moving, unpinning, or reordering icons changes the shortcut. The shortcut can also switch to an existing Word window rather than launch a separate one. Pin Word to the taskbar
In Windows 11, press the Windows key, search for Word or open the app list, right-click Word, choose Show more options if it appears, and select Pin to taskbar.

In Windows 10, right-click the program and choose More > Pin to taskbar. Pinning is usually easier to maintain than a custom hotkey.
3. Create a desktop shortcut
A desktop shortcut is useful when you want a visible launcher or need a shortcut that can later receive a custom key combination.
Drag Word from Start
- Press the Windows key and find Word. In Windows 11, select All if needed.
- Drag the Word entry onto the desktop.
- Windows creates a desktop shortcut.
This approach also works for other Office programs. Microsoft describes it in its guide to creating Office desktop shortcuts.
Use the New Shortcut wizard
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New > Shortcut.
- Enter the location of the app, file, folder, or webpage.
- Follow the wizard and name the shortcut.
The exact location of Word’s executable varies between Microsoft 365, perpetual Office editions, 32-bit and 64-bit installations, and custom setups. Do not assume that one WINWORD.EXE path works on every PC.
4. Find hard-to-locate apps with shell:AppsFolder
Some installed or packaged apps do not expose an obvious executable in Program Files. Windows’ installed-apps folder provides another route.

- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
shell:AppsFolder. - Press Enter.
- Find Word or another app. You can use first-letter navigation.
- Right-click the app and select Create shortcut.
- Accept the prompt to place the shortcut on the desktop.
You can also launch the app directly from this folder. Microsoft documents this location and its keyboard navigation in its Start menu accessibility guidance.

5. Assign a custom shortcut key
After creating a desktop shortcut, Windows may let you assign a key combination to it.
- Right-click the Word shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Click the Shortcut key field.
- Press a key, such as W. Windows typically turns it into a combination such as Ctrl + Alt + W.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The field may not appear for every shortcut type. Traditional desktop programs generally behave more predictably than Microsoft Store, packaged, or web apps. A combination may also conflict with another application, keyboard utility, input method, or language layout.
This conventional workflow is described in Microsoft Q&A guidance, rather than a formal Windows support article. If the shortcut stops working, check that the shortcut target still exists and that the key combination is not being intercepted.
Do not confuse this with Word’s internal shortcut editor. Word’s File > Options > Customize Ribbon > Customize screen changes shortcuts for commands, macros, styles, fonts, and symbols inside Word; it does not necessarily launch Word from the Windows desktop. 6. Use PowerToys for advanced app launchers
Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager is useful when you want centrally managed shortcuts or more control than a desktop shortcut provides.
- Install Microsoft PowerToys from Microsoft’s official distribution channel.
- Open PowerToys and select Keyboard Manager.
- Open the shortcut-remapping feature and add a shortcut.
- Set the action to Start App.
- Choose the application executable.
- Optionally configure arguments, the Start in directory, elevation, visibility, and behavior when the app is already running.
Depending on the configuration, PowerToys can show an existing window, start another instance, do nothing, close the app, or end the task. It is more flexible than the built-in shortcut-key field, but it adds another utility and configuration layer. For ordinary Word launching, Start search or taskbar numbering is simpler.
7. Use the Office key on compatible keyboards
Some keyboards have a dedicated physical Office key. On supported hardware, Office Key + W opens Word. Other documented combinations include:

This is not a normal Windows shortcut available on ordinary keyboards. Microsoft says the feature requires Windows 10 version 1903 or newer and compatible hardware. See the Office key documentation.

8. Open Word with a particular document
A shortcut can target a document instead of only the Word application. The result is that Word opens and loads that file directly.

The general command pattern is:
"C:pathtoWINWORD.EXE" "C:pathtoDocument.docx"Word’s executable location differs by installation, so use the path that exists on your computer. Advanced shortcuts can also use a template or a Word command-line switch. Examples include /safe to start Word in Safe Mode, /q to suppress the splash screen, and /t with a specified template. Switch support and behavior can vary by Word edition; consult Microsoft’s Office command-line switch documentation. Be cautious with template files because they can contain macros.
Which method should you choose?

Troubleshooting
Word is not installed
Start search may show Word for the web or no Word result. Install the desktop application if you need an executable shortcut, command-line switches, or offline access.
The shortcut opens an existing window
Windows + a taskbar number is designed to open or switch to the pinned app. Try Windows + Shift + the number for another instance, or launch Word again from Start. Application behavior can vary.

Confirm that the shortcut still points to a valid target, the Shortcut key field is present and saved, and another program is not using the same combination. Managed work PCs, remote desktops, virtual machines, and keyboard layouts can capture shortcuts differently.
The app is installed but missing from Start
Press Windows + R, enter shell:AppsFolder, and look for it there. Packaged apps may not provide a normal executable path.
The shortcut broke after an Office update
Office repair, an edition change, or an uninstall can move or remove the executable. Recreate the shortcut or update its target. Using Start search or taskbar pinning avoids maintaining a hard-coded executable path.
Windows 10 versus Windows 11
The core shortcuts work on both versions, although Start and taskbar menus differ. Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 users can still use these shortcuts, but should consider their support status when planning a longer-term setup.
