Append #page=N to the PDF’s HTTP or HTTPS URL, replacing N with the page number. For example: https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4. The browser’s PDF viewer must support this fragment; it is not a command sent to the web server.
The direct URL syntax
Place the page fragment after the complete PDF address:
https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4
For page 25 of a manual, the link is:
https://example.com/manual.pdf#page=25
Adobe Acrobat Help documents this format as #page=[page number] for links to PDFs hosted at HTTP or HTTPS addresses. The fragment is interpreted by the browser or PDF viewer after the file opens. It does not change the PDF, create a new file, or transmit the page number to the website’s server.
How to create and use the link
- Copy the direct PDF URL. It should end in the PDF resource, such as
report.pdf, rather than a web page that embeds the document. - Add the fragment. Type
#page=immediately after the URL, then add the desired number:report.pdf#page=12. - Use the complete link wherever needed. Paste it into HTML, Markdown, an email, a documentation system, or a browser address bar.
- Test it in the viewer your readers will use. A browser-based viewer that honors PDF fragments should open at the requested page. An application that ignores fragments may open the document at its default page instead.
Do not put a slash, space, or second question mark between the file name and the fragment. If the PDF URL already has a query string, place the fragment after that query string:

https://example.com/report.pdf?download=1#page=4
HTTP and HTTPS work; local file paths do not
Adobe’s documented page-link method applies to PDFs reached through HTTP or HTTPS. A local path such as file:///Users/name/report.pdf#page=4 is not covered by that method and may be blocked or handled differently by the operating system and PDF application. Upload the document to an HTTP or HTTPS location when you need a link that others can open consistently.
The fragment is handled on the reader’s device. Because it is not sent in the HTTP request, a redirecting server can preserve the file while the final viewer still decides whether to honor #page=4. If an intermediary strips the fragment from a pasted link, the viewer will have no page instruction to follow.
HTML, Markdown and application examples
HTML
<a href="https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4">Open the report at page 4</a>
Markdown
[Open page 4](https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4)
JavaScript navigation
window.location.href = "https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4";
When generating links in code, treat the PDF URL and the fragment as one final URL. If the base address already contains a fragment, replace that fragment rather than appending a second #. Keep the URL unbroken when placing it in plain-text email; a line wrap inserted by an email client can make the link appear to end before #page=.
Page numbers versus named destinations
A page number is the simplest choice for a stable, fixed edition. Adobe recommends a named destination when pages may be inserted or removed, because the destination remains associated with the intended location instead of a physical page index.

| Link type | Example | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page fragment | report.pdf#page=25 |
A specific page in an issued or otherwise stable document | If pages are added or deleted, page 25 may no longer contain the same material |
| Named destination | report.pdf#glossary |
A section that should remain reachable after pagination changes | The PDF must contain a destination with that exact name, created in a PDF authoring tool such as Acrobat |
In Acrobat, create the destination in the document, then use the destination name after the #. Adobe’s example uses #glossary. Destination names are case-sensitive in some viewers, so copy the name exactly as created.
Mozilla PDF.js viewer options
Mozilla PDF.js documents #page=2 as a viewer option. It also allows multiple fragment options separated by an ampersand:
viewer.html#page=2&zoom=200
Here, page=2 selects the page and zoom=200 requests 200 percent zoom. Other PDF viewers may ignore zoom or support a different set of options, so treat these as PDF.js behavior rather than a universal PDF standard.
When PDF.js loads a PDF through its file= option, the file path belongs in the query string, before the fragment. PDF.js documentation says that path must be on the same server as the viewer. The general shape is:

Why the link may open on the wrong page
The viewer ignores fragments
Some desktop applications, embedded viewers, mobile browsers, and custom document components do not implement page fragments. They may open the PDF at page 1 or at the last remembered position. Try the same URL in a current browser with its built-in PDF viewer to determine whether the problem is the link or the application.
The address is not a direct PDF
A page such as https://example.com/download?id=123 may eventually return a PDF, but a redirect, download handler, or HTML wrapper can prevent a viewer from receiving the fragment as expected. Use the final PDF address when the site provides one, and test the complete link after redirects.
The document’s printed labels differ from its physical index
Reports sometimes label introductory pages with Roman numerals or begin printed numbering after a cover. The page= value addresses the viewer’s page position, while a printed label may use a different numbering scheme. Tell readers which convention your link uses, or link to a named destination for a section that must survive a revised layout.

A redirect or copy-and-paste operation removed the fragment
Fragments are client-side data. A server cannot see them in the initial request, and some redirect services, link shorteners, security filters, or chat systems remove them. Inspect the address bar after navigation. If the final URL no longer ends with #page=N, share the original direct URL through a channel that preserves fragments.
The fragment is malformed
- Correct:
report.pdf#page=10 - Incorrect:
report.pdf?page=10(this is a query parameter, not the PDF page fragment) - Incorrect:
report.pdf##page=10(two hash characters) - Incorrect:
report.pdf#page=ten(the documented form expects a page number)
Testing checklist for publishers and developers
- Open the direct PDF URL without a fragment and confirm that it is actually a PDF.
- Open the complete
#page=Nlink in a browser PDF viewer. - Check that the final address bar still contains the fragment after redirects.
- Test a named destination when the document is likely to be repaginated.
- Try the link on the desktop and mobile viewers used by your audience.
- Provide visible link text such as “Open page 12” instead of relying on the URL alone.
- If the target section is critical, include its heading in surrounding text so readers can find it manually when their viewer ignores fragments.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered image or PDF capture of a URL as part of a workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A URL with a page fragment can be supplied to the capture request; the browser or PDF viewer still has to honor that fragment.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode "url=https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4" -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/report.pdf#page=4' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and response details. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. If that fits your workflow, create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

- It can tell a compatible browser PDF viewer which page to display initially.
- It cannot alter the document, renumber pages, or force an incompatible application to jump.
- It cannot reliably target a section whose location changes unless the PDF contains a named destination.
- It does not protect or hide the PDF; anyone with the underlying PDF URL may still access the document according to that server’s permissions.
For a fixed PDF, use #page=N. For a changing document, create and link a named destination. In both cases, verify the final URL in the viewer your readers actually use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding #page=N create a separate PDF file?
No. It is a fragment interpreted by the client after the existing PDF is opened; the original file remains unchanged.
Can I combine a page target with a PDF.js zoom setting?
Yes, PDF.js documents fragments such as #page=2&zoom=200. Other viewers may ignore the zoom option.
What should I provide when a reader’s app ignores the fragment?
Include the section title or printed page label in the link text and offer the direct PDF URL so the reader can navigate manually.
