WordPress does not document a built-in Discussion setting that emails commenters when their comments are approved. Its moderation email alerts the site administrator—and, where allowed, the post author—when a comment is held. To tell the commenter their comment is now visible, use a plugin built for approval notifications or add custom code that sends email when a comment changes from pending to approved.
What WordPress’s built-in comment emails do
In WordPress, go to Settings > Discussion and find the “A comment is held for moderation” option. When enabled, WordPress can email the site administration address about comments awaiting review; eligible post authors may also receive moderation notices. These messages are for moderators, not for commenters after approval. See the WordPress Discussion settings documentation and comment moderation documentation.
The developer references make the distinction explicit: wp_notify_moderator() concerns moderator notifications, while notify_post_author relates to post-author notices for approved comments. Neither is a documented Discussion checkbox for emailing the commenter. See the moderator notification function and the post-author notification filter.

Use a dedicated plugin for the simplest setup
The WordPress.org listing for Comment Approved Notifier Extended says it automatically notifies comment authors when their comments are approved and supports customizable templates. Before installing, review the listing’s current requirements, update history, and privacy implications.

- Install the plugin from its WordPress.org listing or through your site’s plugin interface.
- Set the recipient to the comment author and edit the subject and message template.
- Use a clear subject, such as “Your comment on [Post title] was approved.” In the message, identify the site and provide a link to the approved comment or post.
- Test the notification on a staging site. Confirm that it is sent on approval, reaches the intended address, and is not duplicated by another plugin or workflow.
Use a notification framework for more comment events
If approval email is one part of a broader comment workflow, BracketSpace Notification documents triggers for approved, replied, published, spammed, trashed, and unapproved comments. Map the approved trigger to an email, review the available variables, and check for duplicate messages if another plugin also sends approval notifications.
What custom code needs to handle
A custom implementation should react to the comment’s status transition rather than send mail whenever a moderation-related action runs. WordPress’s notification code checks approval status before post-author notification, and its behavior can be affected by filters; see the post-author notification function and notification filter reference. The exact hook and callback depend on the WordPress version and how the site handles comments.

- Check that the previous status was pending and the new status is approved, so unrelated status changes do not trigger an approval email.
- Load the comment and confirm that it has a valid commenter email address.
- Build a concise message that identifies the site and post and links to the approved comment.
- Send through WordPress’s mail layer and record failures without exposing the commenter’s address.
- Use an idempotency marker if bulk edits or repeated moderation actions could otherwise send multiple messages.
Custom code offers flexibility, but it also makes you responsible for maintaining the callback and checking it against the site’s comment workflow. Test changes on staging rather than introducing unverified notification code directly on a live site.

Use a recognizable sender, avoid unnecessary personal information, and align the email with the site’s privacy policy and notification preferences. Test delivery on staging, including the recipient, links, and message rendering. A notification feature can request that WordPress send email; it does not by itself establish that messages will reach inboxes. Review the site’s mail setup and monitor for sending failures.
