The most reliable built-in way to share files from a Mac to a Windows PC on the same local network is SMB (Server Message Block). Turn on macOS File Sharing, enable SMB for an authorized Mac account, add a specific folder, then open that share in Windows with a UNC path such as \192.168.1.25Mac Exchange.
This is local-network sharing—not internet access, AirDrop, Nearby sharing, remote control, or cloud synchronization. Do not expose SMB directly to the public internet.
Before you begin
- Both computers must be powered on and connected to the same home or office network. Wi-Fi and Ethernet both work; a direct Ethernet connection can also work when networking is configured correctly.
- The Mac must be awake enough to accept network connections.
- You need a folder to share and the password for an authorized local Mac account.
- The network must not be an isolated guest Wi-Fi network.
- SMB traffic, normally TCP port 445, must not be blocked by a firewall or security product.
For remote access from outside the network, use a properly configured VPN or a cloud service such as OneDrive. Microsoft treats ordinary Windows network sharing as a LAN feature and recommends cloud storage for internet sharing: Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing guidance.
Turn on SMB File Sharing on the Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select General > Sharing.
- Select the information button next to File Sharing.
- Turn on File Sharing.
- Select Options.
- Enable Share files and folders using SMB.
- Under Windows File Sharing, enable every Mac account that should connect from Windows.
- Enter the requested password for each account, then select Done.
Apple documents this setup in its current Mac guides: File Sharing settings and Windows file sharing. Localized versions may label the controls as checkboxes or “On,” but the function is the same.

Understand the two permission layers
SMB account authorization and macOS file-system permissions are separate. A Windows login can succeed while saving, renaming, or deleting fails because the Mac account has read-only access or the file is locked or owned by another account. Grant write access only when it is necessary. For recurring access, a dedicated local Mac account with a strong, unique password is easier to manage than sharing a personal account.
Find the Mac name, IP address, and share name
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing, select the information button next to File Sharing, and read the address macOS displays. Apple documents formats such as smb://DNSname/sharename and smb://IPaddress/sharename: Apple’s SMB address guide.

| Mac address | Windows path |
|---|---|
smb://MacName/ShareName |
\MacNameShareName |
smb://192.168.1.25/ShareName |
\192.168.1.25ShareName |
smb://192.168.1.25/ |
\192.168.1.25 |
The share name is the name published by File Sharing and may differ from the original folder name. An IP address can change when the router renews DHCP, so a computer name or a DHCP reservation is preferable for a permanent setup.
Connect from Windows
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and enter a UNC path, for example
\MacNameMac Exchange. - If the name does not resolve, enter the Mac’s IP address instead:
\192.168.1.25Mac Exchange. - When prompted, enter the username and password of a Mac account enabled under Windows File Sharing.
- Open, copy, edit, or save files according to that account’s folder permissions.
Browsing through File Explorer > Network is optional. Discovery and name resolution can fail even when SMB itself works, so a direct UNC path—especially the IP-based form—is the better connectivity test.

Map the Mac share as a Windows drive
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Select More > Map network drive. If the command is hidden, right-click This PC and choose it.
- Choose a drive letter.
- Enter the UNC path, such as
\192.168.1.25Mac Exchange. - Enable Reconnect at sign-in only if the computer normally remains on this network.
- Select Finish and provide credentials if requested.
This is Microsoft’s current Windows 10/11 procedure: Map a network drive. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 or another supported release is the safer long-term choice.
If Windows cannot see or open the Mac
- Confirm both devices are on the same LAN and that neither is using a guest network, blocking VPN, or isolated wireless mode.
- Test the host without a share name:
\192.168.1.25. - Try the complete IP-based path:
\192.168.1.25ShareName. - Confirm File Sharing, SMB, the target folder, and the correct Mac account are enabled.
- Check the Windows network profile is Private, and enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing if you need Network browsing.
- Check firewall and security software rules for local SMB traffic.
- Check the folder’s macOS permissions.
- Restart File Sharing or both computers, then retry.
Windows discovery also depends on services such as Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. These affect whether the Mac appears under Network; they are not necessarily required for a direct IP connection.

Common errors and first fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mac absent from Network | Discovery or name resolution | Use \IPaddress directly. |
| “Path cannot be found” | Wrong address, share name, or network | Test \IPaddress, then verify the published share name. |
| “Access denied” | Account authorization or folder permissions | Recheck the SMB account and macOS access level. |
| Password rejected | Wrong or cached credentials | Use the authorized Mac account and remove stale entries in Windows Credential Manager. |
| Reading works, saving fails | Read-only permission, locked file, or ownership | Grant deliberate write access and test a new file in the shared folder. |
| It worked before, then stopped | Changed DHCP address, sleep, renamed folder, disabled SMB, or changed network profile | Recheck the current address, sharing settings, and network. |
When a password still fails
Do not assume the password itself is wrong. Windows may be reusing an old credential, the account may not be enabled for SMB, or a macOS upgrade may require the account password to be reset for Windows sharing. Apple also notes that passwords for accounts enabled for Windows sharing may be stored less securely: Apple’s File Sharing documentation.
When discovery is the only problem
Apple documents optional workgroup/WINS settings at System Settings > Network > active connection > Details > WINS. Matching a Windows workgroup can help older browsing environments, but it is not a universal requirement for a direct UNC path. Use the Mac’s IP address to bypass discovery issues.
Do not downgrade SMB security
Do not enable SMB 1 as a routine workaround or disable security settings permanently. Apple describes SMB 3 as the default modern connection method and documents signing behavior and special compatibility cases here: Apple Platform Deployment: SMB. Fix addressing, credentials, permissions, and firewall rules first.
Security and cleanup
- Never forward SMB ports to the public internet.
- Share a dedicated folder, not the whole Mac, and prefer named authenticated accounts over unrestricted guest access.
- Use read-only permissions for retrieval-only shares.
- When Windows access is no longer needed, disable the account under Windows File Sharing; for a temporary setup, turn off SMB/File Sharing entirely.
- Apple’s current guidance warns that passwords for Windows-enabled accounts may be stored less securely, making cleanup especially important.
Choose an alternative when SMB is not the right fit
| Need | Better fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One-time nearby transfer or restricted network | USB drive or external SSD | No network troubleshooting; the drive must use a cross-platform file system such as exFAT for normal Mac/Windows read-write use. |
| Remote access, links, collaboration, or version history | OneDrive or Dropbox | Requires a cloud account and synchronization; see OneDrive plans or Dropbox plans. |
| Always-on storage for several computers | NAS, such as Synology | Requires hardware, disks, updates, backups, and administration; see Synology products. |
| Secure access to the existing LAN from elsewhere | VPN | Needs separate setup; it is safer than exposing SMB directly. |
For occasional local sharing, native SMB is usually the simplest choice. A NAS becomes more appropriate when the Mac should not have to remain powered on or when centralized users, backups, snapshots, and multi-device storage matter.
