A full-page screenshot captures the entire scrollable document, not only the pixels currently visible in the browser window. For a one-off image, Firefox and Chrome DevTools provide built-in commands. For repeatable work, use Playwright or Puppeteer, and inspect pages with lazy loading, sticky elements, or infinite scroll because a fullPage option does not guarantee that every deferred item has rendered.
What “full page” captures
Full-page mode extends the capture beyond the viewport to the page’s scrollable content. That differs from a viewport screenshot, which records only what is visible, and from an element screenshot, which targets one component such as a chart or article.
Choose the target before you start:
- Whole document: use full-page capture for an article, landing page, or report.
- One component: capture a locator or CSS-selected element when the rest of the page is irrelevant.
- Loading diagnostics: Chrome’s Network-panel screenshots show visual states during loading; they are not the same as a final full-size screenshot.
Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Enable the screenshot button
- Open Firefox DevTools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Open DevTools Settings.
- In Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the screenshot icon in the DevTools toolbar. Firefox saves the image to your Downloads folder.
Firefox’s screenshot interface also documents a Save full page choice. Labels and placement can change between Firefox versions, so use the wording shown in your installed version if it differs.
Use the console command
Firefox DevTools also accepts a console screenshot command with the --fullpage flag:
:screenshot screenshot.png --fullpageThe command can also take options such as a delay, device-pixel-ratio adjustment, selector, and file settings. Check the current Firefox documentation for exact syntax before relying on those optional arguments in a script.

Take a full-size screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode (the phone/tablet icon).
- Open the More options menu in the device toolbar.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome also offers Capture screenshot, which is viewport-only. The full-size command includes content outside the visible viewport. This documented route is specific to Device Mode; do not assume an identically named command exists in every Chrome panel.
Do not confuse it with screenshots in the Network panel. Those captures record visual states while resources load and are intended for diagnosing loading behavior, not for producing one final, complete page image.
Automate full-page captures with Playwright
Automation is preferable when you need the same capture repeatedly, want a reproducible viewport, or must integrate screenshots into tests and build jobs. Install Playwright in a Node.js project, install its browser binaries, then use the page screenshot API.

Add waits deliberately: waitUntil: 'networkidle' is not a universal guarantee that lazy content has finished, and a selector-specific wait is often more meaningful:

Puppeteer provides browser navigation, interaction, and full-page or element screenshots. A minimal script is:

})();Use Puppeteer when it already fits your Node.js automation stack; use Playwright when its browser coverage, locator API, or test tooling better matches your project. The cited documentation establishes their capture capabilities, not a universal speed or accuracy winner.
Lazy loading, infinite scroll, and other page traps
A full-page flag describes the area to capture; it does not promise that every site will load deferred content. Review the resulting image whenever the page uses:

- Lazy images: images may load only after an element approaches the viewport.
- Infinite scroll: additional items may require scrolling or an application-specific trigger.
- Nested scroll containers: the document may be short while a panel inside it holds the real content.
- Virtualized lists: the browser may render only currently visible rows.
- Sticky headers: a fixed header can appear repeatedly or cover content in a stitched image.
There is no single documented workaround that handles all of these cases. A page-specific approach can include scrolling the relevant container, waiting for a known “loaded” selector, increasing a delay, or capturing the component directly. Treat each workaround as site-dependent and verify the output instead of assuming success.

Use browser controls when you need one image quickly. Use automation when URLs, viewports, waits, and filenames must be consistent. Use an element capture when a complete document would include irrelevant material.

Troubleshoot incomplete or incorrect captures
The image stops at the viewport
Confirm that you selected Firefox’s entire-page control, Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, or the automation option fullPage: true. A normal screenshot command is viewport-only.
Images or sections are missing
Wait for a page-specific selector, add a modest delay, and inspect whether content is inside a nested scroller or virtualized list. If the site requires scrolling to trigger rendering, automate that container before capture. Recheck the image after every change.

The page is blank or shows a consent dialog
Handle the dialog as part of navigation, or use a capture service that can accept common consent interfaces before taking the image. Confirm that authentication, custom headers, and cookies are available to the browser context when the page is private.
Sticky content is duplicated or overlays text
Capture the relevant element instead, or use page-specific CSS/JavaScript to disable the sticky behavior. This is not a guaranteed browser-wide fix; test against the actual layout.

Use a realistic navigation timeout, avoid waiting forever for pages that keep analytics connections open, and replace a global network-idle wait with a selector that represents usable content. Log the URL and save an error screenshot so a failed navigation is distinguishable from an empty page.

Practical reliability and cost checklist
- Set a stable viewport and device scale when comparing captures.
- Wait for content that matters, not merely for an arbitrary timer.
- Inspect pages with lazy loading, nested scrolling, or virtualization.
- Keep authentication data out of logs and source control.
- Save the URL, timestamp, browser version, and capture settings with automated artifacts.
- Retry transient navigation failures, but do not treat retries as proof that a page rendered correctly.
- For API workflows, use response verdict and billing headers to distinguish a clean capture from a failed or non-billable request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-page mode capture an entire infinite-scroll feed?
Not necessarily. Infinite-scroll applications often require page-specific scrolling or an API-driven export before all items exist in the document.
Can I capture only one element?
