In Microsoft Edge for Windows, right-click the window’s title bar and choose Name window…. Enter a label such as Work or Research, then select Save. The label identifies that one open Edge window in places such as Alt+Tab and taskbar previews; it does not rename Edge, a tab, a profile, or a Workspace.
Name an Edge window
- Open Microsoft Edge and activate the window you want to identify.
- Right-click the window’s upper frame, usually the title bar. In some Edge builds, the command is also available by right-clicking an empty area beside the tabs.
- Select Name window….
- Type a short, recognizable label, such as
Work,Taxes 2026,Vacation planning,Client – Contoso, orResearch – Laptop purchase. - Select Save or confirm the entry.
Repeat the process for each Edge window. Choose names based on the task or project, rather than the website currently open. For example, Quarterly taxes remains useful when you switch from a bank tab to a spreadsheet, while Google does not.
This feature applies to an entire browser window. A single named window can contain many unrelated tabs, but you cannot use it to rename an individual tab, tab group, Edge profile, Microsoft Edge application, or Windows virtual desktop.

Where the name appears
The practical purpose of naming a window is faster identification when several Edge windows are open. Depending on your Windows settings, Edge version, and window layout, the label may appear in:

- Alt+Tab: useful when multiple windows have similar tab titles.
- Taskbar window previews: the name can help you choose the right thumbnail.
- The browser title bar: some configurations show it there, particularly with vertical tabs and the relevant title-bar option enabled.
Display behavior is not universal. The active tab’s title can still appear elsewhere, and naming a window does not replace every Edge or Windows label. Microsoft’s documentation for this feature is limited, so placement can change with Edge builds, title-bar settings, staged rollouts, and Windows behavior. Rename or clear a window name
To change a label, activate the named window, open the title-bar context menu again, choose Name window…, replace the existing text, and confirm.
If your build accepts a blank value, deleting the text and saving may remove the custom name. If it does not, replace the label with a neutral name such as Edge window. There is no consistently documented Microsoft procedure for clearing a name on every build; closing the window and checking how Edge recreates it can be a practical test, but do not treat that as a guaranteed reset method.

- Use the correct menu. Right-click the actual title bar, not a tab. Then try the empty area around the tab strip as well.
- Make the frame accessible. If the title bar is hidden, temporarily adjust Edge’s appearance/title-bar settings, or restore the window from maximized mode and try again.
- Update Edge. Open
edge://settings/help, let Edge check for updates, and restart the browser. - Check the experimental flag. Visit
edge://flags/#window-naming. If Window Naming exists, its state can affect availability. Flags are experimental and may be renamed, removed, or ignored, so this is not a permanent fix. A Microsoft Q&A discussion documents the flag but does not establish a supported enable/disable policy. - Check a managed installation. On a work or school device, open
edge://policyto see applied policies and ask the administrator whether controlled rollouts or restrictions are involved. No supported enterprise policy for window naming is established in the available documentation. - Report the change. Use Settings and more (…) → Help and feedback → Send feedback if the command disappeared after an update or behaves differently from another computer.
Does Edge save a named window permanently?
Do not rely on ordinary window naming as a permanent, reusable project. The label identifies the current window; it is not the same as saving that window and all its tabs as a named tab set. A June 2026 Microsoft Q&A response distinguishes named windows from saved collections and explains that newer Edge does not provide a built-in library for reopening a named window with its tabs outside features such as session restoration or Favorites. That is forum guidance, not a formal product guarantee, and restoration can vary by build.

If you need to return to a project later, use a Workspace, Favorites, or Edge’s session-restore settings. Do not assume that an ordinary window name syncs to another computer.
Named windows, Workspaces, profiles, and Favorites

Profiles separate browsing data and sign-in environments; naming a window does not create or switch profiles. Use profiles for work versus personal accounts, not merely for labels. See Microsoft’s profile documentation.
Workspaces are a different Edge organization feature. A Workspace has a project name and theme and groups related tabs in a project-oriented browser window. It can be edited or deleted from the Workspaces menu. Microsoft’s product page currently lists desktop Edge, Windows 10/11 or Mac, Edge version 144 or later, and a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra ID account as requirements, although availability can vary by device, market, and rollout. Check the support guide and product page for current conditions.
Platform limits and useful naming habits
The procedure and benefits documented here are for Microsoft Edge desktop on Windows, where Alt+Tab, taskbar previews, and Windows title bars make the feature especially useful. The supplied evidence does not establish identical behavior on macOS or Linux, so do not assume the same command or display locations there.

- Keep labels short enough to recognize in a task switcher.
- Use stable project or purpose names, not the current website.
- Name every window in a consistent style, such as
Work – ClientorPersonal – Travel. - Remember that a name improves recognition but does not prevent closing the wrong window or guarantee recovery of its tabs.

Can I name more than one Edge window?

Can I name an InPrivate window?

Is a Workspace the same as a named window?
No. A named window labels an ordinary open window; a Workspace is Edge’s project-oriented tab organization feature.
Does this work on Mac?
The strongest evidence is for Windows. Edge’s Workspaces support Mac under stated conditions, but identical named-window behavior on macOS is not established here.
