The safest way to move Windows from an HDD to an SSD on the same computer is to clone the entire system disk, not just copy the C: drive. A full clone preserves Windows, installed applications, settings, user files, EFI or System Reserved partitions, and Windows Recovery.
Back up important data first, connect the SSD, clone every required partition, shut down, disconnect the old HDD, and boot from the SSD. Keep the HDD untouched until Windows and your files have been thoroughly tested.
Clone Windows or perform a clean installation?
Choose a full-disk clone when the existing Windows installation works properly and you want to retain applications, settings, files, and user accounts. This is usually the quickest method when the SSD is replacing the HDD in the same computer.
Choose a clean installation when Windows is corrupted, infected, unstable, heavily cluttered, or installed on a failing HDD. A clean install is also preferable when moving the drive to a substantially different computer or changing from a legacy BIOS/MBR setup to a modern UEFI/GPT configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)

| Method | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Full-disk clone | Keeping Windows, programs, settings, and files | Copies existing clutter, corruption, or malware |
| Clean installation | Starting fresh or replacing an unhealthy Windows installation | Apps, settings, and files must be restored manually |
| Backup image and restore | Cases where direct cloning is impractical | Requires more storage and preparation |
Microsoft’s installation-media process warns that a clean installation removes personal files, applications, manufacturer customizations, and settings. See Microsoft’s Windows installation-media guidance.
Check SSD compatibility before buying
SSDs are not interchangeable simply because they have similar names. Check the computer or motherboard manual for both physical fit and supported protocol.
- 2.5-inch SATA SSD: Common replacement for a 2.5-inch laptop HDD. It needs a SATA data connection and power.
- M.2 SATA SSD: Uses the M.2 shape but communicates through SATA. An M.2 slot may not support it.
- M.2 NVMe SSD: Requires an M.2 slot with NVMe or PCIe support.
- USB connection: Useful for cloning, but the SSD should normally be installed internally for the final boot.
A laptop with one drive bay may need a SATA-to-USB adapter or an NVMe USB enclosure. The adapter must match the SSD’s protocol; a SATA adapter will not operate an NVMe drive.
How large should the SSD be?
The target SSD must have enough space for Windows, boot and recovery partitions, installed applications, user files, and working space. It does not always need to match the HDD’s total advertised capacity: cloning software can often shrink the Windows partition when the amount of data fits.
- Open Settings → System → Storage in Windows 11, or Settings → System → Storage in Windows 10.
- Check how much space is actually used.
- Inspect all partitions in Disk Management, not only the visible
C:drive. - Move large videos, games, installers, and archives elsewhere if the target is smaller.
- Leave practical free space on the SSD instead of filling it almost completely.
If the clone leaves unused capacity, Disk Management can usually extend the Windows partition when the unallocated space is adjacent to it. Crucial explains why an SSD can show less usable capacity after cloning.
Prepare before cloning
Do not begin until you have a separate backup. A clone is not a backup: it can reproduce accidental deletions or corruption, and the destination disk will be erased.
Backup checklist
- Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, and project folders
- Browser profiles, saved passwords, and synchronization information
- Email archives and game saves
- Application license keys and activation details
- Two-factor-authentication recovery codes
- Your BitLocker recovery key
- A Windows installation or recovery USB
Also check the HDD’s health. If it is clicking, disappearing, reporting read errors, or becoming extremely slow, prioritize copying irreplaceable files or creating a recovery-oriented image. Repeated cloning attempts can worsen a failing drive.

Check Windows activation and edition
- Windows 11: Open Settings → System → Activation.
- Windows 10: Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
Record whether the system runs Windows Home or Pro. Link the digital license to your Microsoft account where applicable. Reinstalling the same edition on the same licensed device will normally reactivate using its digital license, but edition changes and significant hardware changes can require additional activation steps. See Microsoft’s activation guidance.
Handle BitLocker or device encryption
BitLocker does not always need to be fully decrypted, but its recovery key must be saved. Hardware and boot changes can trigger BitLocker recovery.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and check the status:
manage-bde -status
If the operating-system volume is protected, suspend its protectors before cloning:

After Windows has successfully booted from the SSD, resume protection:
manage-bde -protectors -enable C:
Suspending protection keeps the data encrypted while allowing planned boot or hardware changes. The exact behavior depends on the cloning tool, so follow its current instructions too. Microsoft documents these commands in its BitLocker operations guide.

The menu names vary between programs, but the essential process is the same. Macrium Reflect provides a dedicated disk-cloning workflow and advertises support for preparing cloned systems for some changed-hardware scenarios through ReDeploy. Its current licensing and edition terms should be checked on the official Macrium cloning page.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Connect the SSD
Connect the SSD internally or through the correct SATA-to-USB adapter or NVMe enclosure. Then open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management.
Identify both drives by manufacturer, capacity, interface, and existing partition contents. Do not rely only on “Disk 0” or “Disk 1”; numbering can vary. If Windows asks to initialize the SSD, avoid formatting the wrong disk and let the cloning application handle preparation when possible.
2. Select the source and destination
In the cloning application, select the old HDD as the source and the new SSD as the destination. Verify the model and capacity of both disks several times. Cloning normally erases existing data on the destination.
3. Copy the entire disk
Copy every required partition, including:
- EFI System Partition or System Reserved partition
- Microsoft Reserved partition, where present
- The Windows partition
- Windows Recovery partition
- Any manufacturer recovery partition you want to retain
Do not copy only C:. Windows may then have no boot files or recovery environment on the SSD.

If the SSD is smaller than the HDD, reduce the Windows partition before or during cloning. Remove unnecessary files first. Windows can shrink an NTFS volume through Disk Management, or you can use DiskPart:
diskpart
list volume
select volume <number>
shrink desired=<size-in-MB>
Do not shrink or delete a partition until you have confirmed that you selected the correct volume. Large immovable files, unusual partition layouts, or recovery partitions may prevent a smaller target from working.

If the SSD is larger, select the cloning tool’s option to expand the Windows partition, or extend it later in Disk Management if the unallocated space is adjacent.
5. Start the clone
Confirm the destination-erase warning, begin the operation, and allow the computer to reboot into the tool’s preinstallation environment if requested. Do not interrupt the process or disconnect either drive.

Boot from the SSD after cloning
- Shut down the computer completely.
- Disconnect or temporarily remove the old HDD.
- Leave the SSD connected as the only intended Windows disk.
- Start the computer.
- If necessary, enter UEFI or BIOS setup and select Windows Boot Manager associated with the SSD.
Disconnecting the old HDD prevents the firmware from silently booting the old installation and exposes whether the SSD is genuinely bootable.
Once Windows starts, verify that:
- The desktop loads normally.
- The SSD is the
C:drive. - Applications open and user files are present.
- Windows is activated.
- Device Manager shows no storage-controller problem.
- BitLocker can be resumed if it was suspended.
Restart the computer more than once before considering the migration complete. Keep the old HDD untouched until this testing and a current backup are complete.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete migration
The SSD is not detected
Check the physical connection, adapter or enclosure compatibility, M.2 slot support, power connection, and firmware detection. An M.2 drive may be physically installable but electrically incompatible with the slot.
The computer says there is no boot device
- Disconnect the old HDD.
- Confirm that the SSD appears in UEFI or BIOS.
- Select the SSD’s Windows Boot Manager.
- Preserve the cloned disk’s existing boot mode rather than casually switching between UEFI and legacy BIOS.
- Use the cloning application’s boot-repair environment or Windows installation media’s Startup Repair.
A missing EFI or System Reserved partition usually means that only the Windows partition was copied. Redo the migration as a whole-disk clone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe old HDD still boots
Shut down and disconnect the old disk, then select the SSD’s Windows Boot Manager in firmware. Both disks can contain similar boot entries, so leaving the source connected makes the result ambiguous.

BitLocker asks for a recovery key
Use the saved recovery key. Boot, firmware, Secure Boot, and boot-configuration changes can affect BitLocker validation. Do not delete the recovery key or repeatedly change firmware settings without a recovery plan. Microsoft explains these triggers in its BitLocker and BCD guidance.
The clone fails with read errors
Stop repeatedly stressing the HDD. Back up accessible files immediately, check drive health, and use a recovery-oriented imaging tool or professional data-recovery service when the files are irreplaceable. A clone cannot repair a failing source disk and may preserve existing corruption.
The SSD shows less space than expected
Some capacity is consumed by recovery partitions, and the main Windows partition may not have been expanded. Inspect the layout in Disk Management and extend the Windows partition if the unallocated space is adjacent.

Windows activation changes
Same-edition migration on the same computer normally preserves activation, but a motherboard change, different edition, or certain license types can require reactivation. Use Microsoft’s hardware-change activation guidance.
When a clean installation is better
Use Microsoft’s installation media when the old Windows installation is unhealthy, the source drive is failing, you want to remove accumulated software, or the SSD is moving to substantially different hardware.
- Back up personal files and application data separately.
- Create Windows installation media on a USB drive.
- Boot the new computer from that USB drive.
- Install the same Windows edition that is licensed for the device.
- Install drivers and Windows updates.
- Restore files and reinstall applications.
Deleting existing target partitions during setup removes their contents. A clean install is not a shortcut for transferring installed programs or settings.
What to do with the old HDD
Do not format it immediately after seeing the SSD boot once. Keep it unchanged until Windows has booted successfully several times, important programs work, files have been checked, activation is confirmed, recovery options are available, and a current backup exists.
After that, you can retain the HDD as secondary storage, reformat it for noncritical data, use it as an offline backup if its health is good, or securely erase it before disposal or resale. Remember that an old, failing HDD should not be treated as your only backup.
