If your iPhone 16 is already set up, Apple’s supported Move to iOS process cannot import your Android WhatsApp history without erasing the iPhone. Apple lists WhatsApp messages and media among the data that can move, but the transfer starts during iPhone setup. If you cannot erase the iPhone, a paid third-party tool is the main option to try for live chats; it is not an Apple- or WhatsApp-supported equivalent. Exporting chats is free, but creates an archive—not conversations you can restore in WhatsApp.
Choose the method that fits what you need

Apple’s current Android-to-iPhone transfer instructions require an iPhone to be at setup for the “From Android” route. If you want live WhatsApp conversations on an already-configured iPhone and will not erase it, consider a third-party utility only after weighing the risks below.
Use Apple’s supported method if you can erase the iPhone
Move to iOS can transfer WhatsApp messages and media as part of a broader Android-to-iPhone migration. Apple also lists contacts, SMS messages and message history, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, mail accounts, calendars, call history, web bookmarks, and some free apps available on both platforms. Music, books and PDFs may need to be moved separately. A transferable-data list is not a promise that every WhatsApp setting, account artifact, or Business-specific feature will move.
Prepare both phones and protect existing data
- Back up the iPhone you already use. Make an encrypted backup to iCloud or a computer, then confirm it completed. Erasing the phone removes its local content and settings.
- Keep an Android fallback. In WhatsApp on Android, make a current Google Drive backup if available, and confirm the chats and media you need still open on the phone. A Google Drive backup is useful for Android recovery; it is not an iPhone WhatsApp restore.
- Confirm the account details. Note the WhatsApp number and make sure you can receive its verification code on the iPhone. Plan to use the same number when activating WhatsApp there.
- Check storage and updates. Ensure the iPhone has enough free space for the selected content. Update WhatsApp and both phones’ operating systems where practical.
- Power and connect the devices. Keep both phones plugged in, with Wi-Fi enabled. Apple documents a cable-based transfer option for supported combinations; a compatible USB-C connection may be preferable if wireless transfer is unreliable. The available route and exact requirements depend on the devices and software offered during setup.
Apple updates its supported-device and software guidance. Check its current instructions for the requirements that apply to your specific Android phone and iPhone before erasing anything.

Erase the iPhone and transfer WhatsApp
- On the iPhone, open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Menu wording can vary by iOS version. Do not continue until you have verified the backup you intend to keep.
- Start iPhone setup. At Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From Android.
- On Android, open or install Move to iOS, then follow its prompts and permissions. If setup offers a supported app-free transfer route, follow the on-screen instructions instead.
- Enter the code shown on the iPhone when prompted. Connect the phones using the offered wireless or compatible cable method.
- Choose WhatsApp and any other categories you want to move. Leave both phones nearby, powered and undisturbed until the transfer reports completion.
- Finish iPhone setup, install WhatsApp from the App Store, and verify it with the same number used on Android. Follow WhatsApp’s import prompt if it appears.
- Inspect the transferred chats and media before deleting WhatsApp data or resetting the Android phone.
Apple’s guidance says to keep the devices near each other and connected to power until the transfer finishes. If the iPhone runs out of space or Apple reports an incomplete transfer, its regional transfer guidance may direct you to erase the iPhone and restart the migration.
If you cannot erase the iPhone: assess third-party tools carefully
Products such as Wondershare MobileTrans and Tenorshare iCareFone WhatsApp Transfer advertise Android-to-iPhone WhatsApp migration without resetting the destination phone. MobileTrans also has a product and plans page. These are vendor claims, not independent guarantees: success, privacy practices, supported WhatsApp versions, and handling of existing iPhone conversations can vary.

Before paying or connecting either phone, do the following:
- Make separate backups of both phones. For the iPhone, use an encrypted backup and verify it completed.
- Download the utility only from its official vendor site. Read the license, refund terms, device limits, and what the trial actually permits before purchase.
- Check current support for your exact iPhone 16 model and iOS release, Android model and version, WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business edition, and the size of your chat library.
- Ask how the tool handles encrypted backups, two-step verification, existing iPhone WhatsApp messages, and data processed on a computer or server. Do not assume private chats remain only on your devices.
- Avoid tools that ask you to disable security protections, install a modified WhatsApp client, or upload a private chat database to an unfamiliar service.
- Assume existing iPhone WhatsApp data could be overwritten or merged imperfectly unless the vendor clearly explains the behavior for your setup—and preserve a backup either way.
- Keep the Android phone intact until you have checked the transferred history on the iPhone.
A no-reset utility may require a Windows or Mac computer, a cable, or both. Another Wondershare-associated product, Mutsapper, is marketed for some mobile or OTG-based transfers; its requirements and compatibility can differ. No product should be treated as an official migration route simply because it advertises “one click” or “no data loss.”

Free alternatives preserve records, not live chats
Export an individual chat for reference
WhatsApp’s export-chat feature can create a text-based file and may include media. The result is an attachment or archive you can keep or read; it does not become a normal conversation in iPhone WhatsApp and cannot be restored into the iOS WhatsApp database using WhatsApp’s standard tools. Large exports may be limited or omit some media, so use this when a readable record is enough—not as a migration.
Copy photos and other files separately
You can move photos and videos with Google Photos, a computer, USB storage, cloud storage, or another file-transfer workflow. The files may then be available on the iPhone, but they will not retain their position in the original WhatsApp conversation. Chat association, captions, sender information and conversational context may be lost.

Skip the spare-iPhone bridge unless you accept experimentation
Some users describe importing to a spare iPhone and then attempting another transfer to the target phone. Apple does not document this as a way to import into an already-configured iPhone. It can involve more than one reset, requires enough space on the spare device, and may not preserve or merge the history cleanly. Treat it as an unverified workaround, not a dependable shortcut.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete migration
WhatsApp does not appear as a transfer option
- Confirm both WhatsApp and Move to iOS are current and that the iPhone is genuinely at the initial setup flow.
- Check Apple’s current software and device requirements, and confirm you selected From Android during setup.
- Verify there is enough iPhone storage and that you are moving the supported WhatsApp edition rather than a modified client.
- Restart both phones and retry only after confirming the iPhone backup is safe. If wireless transfer repeatedly disconnects, use a compatible direct cable if the setup flow supports it.
- If the transfer keeps dropping, temporarily disable Android cellular data and keep both devices on power.
The transfer stops or seems frozen
Large media libraries can take a long time; do not cancel immediately. Check the iPhone’s available space, remove unnecessary large Android files if space is marginal, and retry with a supported cable connection if possible. If it is clearly stalled, restart both phones and try again. If the iPhone is full or Apple reports that only some content transferred, follow Apple’s recovery guidance; completing a fresh setup-stage migration may require erasing the iPhone again.

WhatsApp opens but chats or media are missing
- Confirm WhatsApp was installed after the Move to iOS transfer finished and that you verified the same phone number.
- Make sure the transfer completed on both phones; do not treat a Google Drive backup as an iCloud restore.
- Compare WhatsApp storage totals on both phones, then inspect older conversations as well as recent ones.
- Check documents and voice notes, not only photos and videos. Confirm the iPhone has enough free storage for the data.
- Keep the Android phone and its WhatsApp data available. Do not uninstall WhatsApp or delete the account there while investigating.
Verify the history before retiring the Android phone
- Open recent and older conversations, including chats from different years.
- Check that group chats and starred messages are present.
- Open photos, videos, documents and voice notes rather than relying on thumbnails alone.
- Confirm the correct WhatsApp number is active and that a new message can arrive on the iPhone.
- Make a fresh iPhone backup after confirming the migration.
