To move an object in Canva, select it and drag it to a new spot on the page. For finer placement, use the arrow keys or Canva’s Position controls; if an object is hard to select, locked, grouped, or behind something else, use the Layers view to find and manage it.
Move an object with a mouse or touchpad
An “object” is any selectable item in a design: for example, a text box, photo, video, shape, line, icon, sticker, chart, table, frame, or group. Canva’s editing and designing help covers these different types of content.
- Open your design and click the object you want to move.
- When its selection boundary appears, click and hold on the object’s body—not a corner or side handle.
- Drag it to the new location, then release.
The object should change position without changing size or orientation. As you drag, Canva may show dotted alignment guides when the object lines up with other elements. Use them to align edges or centers; Canva also recommends consistent alignment and spacing in its alignment guidance.
If the object resizes or rotates, undo and start the drag from its middle. Corner and side handles change size, while a rotation handle turns the object.

Move an object on mobile
- Tap the object once to select it.
- Press and hold inside it, then drag it to the new spot.
- Release when it is aligned where you want it.
Toolbar placement can differ between mobile and desktop, and controls can vary with the selected object and editor. If an item is small, zoom in before dragging. Use two fingers to pan or zoom the canvas when needed, and avoid double-tapping text unless you mean to edit its contents. On a touchscreen, make sure you are dragging the selected item rather than panning the canvas.
Move an object precisely
On desktop, select the object as an object—not with a text cursor active inside a text box—and press an arrow key to nudge it. Canva’s keyboard-shortcut reference lists arrow keys for small movements and Shift + Arrow for larger movements. It does not specify a universal pixel distance, so check the result in your design rather than assuming a fixed increment.

You can also select an item and open Position in the toolbar. Depending on the editor, design, selection, and account, its controls can help with alignment, spacing, sizing, rotation, and arrangement. Canva describes these capabilities in its product announcement about Position and Layers. Do not assume that a numeric X/Y field appears for every object or in every version of the editor.

Move several objects together
To move a temporary selection, hold Shift and click each object on desktop, then drag the selection. Canva documents Shift-based multi-selection in its editing guidance. On mobile, use the editor’s multi-select control or gesture if it is available; the exact control may differ by app version.
If you will move the same elements together repeatedly, select them and choose Group, or use the grouping shortcut if it works in your editor. The group moves as one unit, preserving the members’ relative spacing. To edit a member individually, select the group and choose Ungroup. Grouping and ungrouping shortcuts are listed in Canva’s shortcut reference linked above.

Change which object is in front
Dragging changes an object’s location on the page. It does not necessarily change whether it appears above or below another object. That is a separate action: changing the layer order.
Select the object and use Position or the editor’s arrange controls to choose an option such as Bring forward, Send backward, Bring to front, or Send to back. You can also use the Layers view to inspect overlapping elements and change their order. Canva says Layers can show design elements and support selecting, repositioning, and deleting them, including identifying locked, grouped, or background items; see its Layers announcement.

Find an object that is hidden or difficult to select
- Try clicking an exposed edge of the object.
- If another item is covering it, temporarily move that top item out of the way.
- Open Layers and select the intended element from the list instead of clicking it on the canvas.
- Move the element, and adjust its layer order if needed. Restore any temporarily moved item.
Layers is particularly useful when several objects overlap or when a background or grouped item is difficult to identify on the page. If you move the wrong element, undo immediately, then select the intended one from Layers.
What to check when an object will not move

| You cannot select the item you want | Use Layers, click an exposed edge, or temporarily move the item covering it. |

| A text cursor appears | You are editing the text rather than moving its box. Press Escape or click the box boundary, then drag the box. Canva’s text instructions explain that double-clicking a text box enters text-editing mode. |
| The object changes size or rotates | Undo and drag from the body of the object, away from its resize or rotate handles. |
| The image shifts inside a frame | You are likely adjusting the image in crop mode, not moving the frame. Finish or exit cropping, then select the frame boundary to move the frame. Use crop controls when you intend to reposition the image inside it. |
| A background will not behave like a separate object | Use the background’s own editing, crop, or replacement controls. A background may not be an ordinary free-floating element. |
| Arrow keys do nothing | Make sure the object—not the canvas or a text cursor—has focus. Check whether it is locked, and try dragging or Position controls instead. |
Locking availability can depend on your account or workspace. Canva lists element locking among its plan-dependent controls on its pricing page; if you cannot unlock an item, your current permissions or plan may not expose the control.
Template elements and flat images
A template item may be a normal element, part of a group, locked, or set as a background. Select it directly or use Layers to determine which case applies. If several separate elements have been combined into one flat image, Canva cannot ordinarily move each visible part independently—the image is a single object. Canva markets Magic Layers as a way to turn some flat designs into editable layouts, but it is a separate feature and should not be assumed to work on every image or account.

These combinations are listed in Canva’s shortcut reference, but the retrieved page is localized, and shortcuts can vary with the editor, browser, operating system, or updates. Check the shortcuts shown in your own Canva interface if a combination does not work. Keyboard nudging is a convenience, not a guaranteed replacement for pointer or touch controls; Canva’s accessibility report notes that some canvas interactions are not fully keyboard accessible.
Do you need Canva Pro to move objects?
No paid plan is needed just to drag ordinary objects around a design. Pro or other workspace features may matter for premium content, advanced editing tools, or particular locking and brand-management controls, but upgrading solely to move a basic object is not necessary. Plan features and availability can change, so check Canva’s current plan comparison for your region and account.
