For music files stored on a Windows PC, import them into the Apple Music app, then use Apple Devices to sync the whole library or selected songs, albums, artists, genres, and playlists to your iPhone. You do not need an Apple Music subscription to sync music you own. If you mean songs from an Apple Music subscription, use Sync Library instead; those tracks follow a different process.
Choose the right method first
- MP3s, albums, or other local music files on your PC: Import them into Apple Music for Windows, then sync them with Apple Devices.
- Apple Music subscription songs: Sign in on both devices and use Sync Library. Subscription tracks are not transferred by ordinary cable sync when Sync Library is enabled.
- An existing iTunes library: You may be able to keep using iTunes for that library or legacy workflow. Apple’s current Windows music-sync instructions use Apple Music and Apple Devices.
- Music from another streaming service: Use that service’s iPhone app. Its downloaded tracks do not automatically become local songs in Apple’s Music app.
This guide covers Windows 10 or later. The current Apple-supported workflow is Apple Music for the computer library plus Apple Devices for iPhone syncing.
What you need
- A Windows PC with the music files accessible.
- Apple Music for Windows and Apple Devices for Windows. Both are free to download; a paid Apple Music subscription is not required for local-file syncing.
- An unlocked iPhone, a USB or USB-C cable, and enough free iPhone storage for the music you select.
- A backup of your PC music files, especially before changing a sync setup or moving files.
Apple Music manages the music library on the PC. Apple Devices manages the connected iPhone and applies the sync settings. Installing Apple Devices alone is not enough for Apple’s current music-sync workflow.

Move local music with Apple Music and Apple Devices
1. Import music into Apple Music
Open Apple Music on Windows and use its library import command to add the files or folder containing your music. The exact menu wording can vary with app version, but look for an option to add files or folders to the library. After importing, check that the songs appear and play in Apple Music. Review artist, album, track number, and playlist details now, before syncing.

Keep the source files in a stable folder and back them up. Importing does not necessarily make a new, self-contained copy of every file in one central library folder. Apple’s import guidance explains that library entries can refer to files in their original locations; if you move or delete those originals later, a track may become unavailable.
2. Connect and trust the iPhone
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a USB or USB-C cable.
- Unlock the iPhone. If it asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and enter the passcode.
- Open Apple Devices and select your iPhone in the sidebar.
Start with a cable, especially for a first sync or a large library. Apple also supports Wi-Fi syncing, which is more convenient once the connection is set up.
3. Choose what to sync
- In Apple Devices, select the iPhone, then choose Music.
- Check Sync music onto [iPhone name].
- Choose Entire music library to sync everything in the PC library, or Selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists to choose specific items.
- If selecting items, check only the artists, albums, genres, or playlists you want on the iPhone. You can optionally choose Include videos.
- You can also enable Automatically fill free space with songs when syncing selected content. This fills available space for you; it is less precise than choosing a specific playlist or albums.
- Select Apply and wait for the sync to finish.
Labels may vary slightly by app version or language. Look for the equivalent music-sync controls if the wording differs. For a device with limited storage, selected playlists or albums are usually easier to manage than syncing the entire PC library.

When Apple Devices has finished applying the changes, use the iPhone’s eject control in the app before unplugging it. Open the iPhone’s Music app and check Library, Albums, Artists, or Playlists. If offline listening is the goal, test a transferred song with the iPhone disconnected from Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Sync only some music
Selective syncing is useful when the PC library is larger than the iPhone’s available space, or when you want a travel, workout, or family playlist without copying everything. In Apple Devices, choose the iPhone, open Music, enable music syncing, select Selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists, check the content you want, then choose Apply.

Use a specific playlist when you want a predictable set of songs. The automatic free-space option is convenient, but it chooses songs to fill space rather than preserving a carefully curated selection.
If you subscribe to Apple Music
For Apple Music catalog tracks, use Apple Music’s cloud library rather than ordinary cable syncing. Install Apple Music on the PC and iPhone, sign in to both with the same Apple Account, and turn on Sync Library. Add music to your library, then download the tracks you want on the iPhone for offline playback. See Apple’s instructions for getting music on iPhone.
With Sync Library enabled, Apple Music subscription content is handled through your account and library across devices; it cannot be cable-synced as if it were a local file in the PC library. This is different from syncing music files you own. A subscription is useful for streaming and cloud access across devices, but it is not a requirement for transferring your own local music.
Using an existing iTunes library
If your PC already has an iTunes library or your setup depends on iTunes, you may continue with its documented workflow rather than rebuilding the library immediately. In iTunes, import music with File > Add File to Library or File > Add Folder to Library. Connect and unlock the iPhone, select its device button, choose Music in the sidebar, check Sync Music, choose the entire library or selected items, and select Apply. Eject the iPhone before disconnecting. Apple documents this in its iTunes sync instructions.
Some iTunes versions also provide a manual route: select Music and Library, open Downloaded, right-click an item, choose Add to Device, and select the iPhone. This is an alternative for installations that expose those controls; Apple’s newer Windows directions center on Apple Devices.

Remove synced music without deleting PC originals
To remove automatically synced music from the iPhone, connect it, open Apple Devices, select the iPhone and Music, deselect the items you no longer want, choose Apply, then eject the phone. This removes the selected synced music from the device while leaving it in the Windows library.
Do not delete the PC library copy just to free iPhone space. If a synced item is deleted from the Windows library, or excluded from the selected sync setup, it can also disappear from the iPhone at the next sync. If you want to keep the song, retain a separate backup on the PC or another storage device.
Troubleshooting
The iPhone does not appear in Apple Devices
- Unlock the iPhone and reconnect it. Accept the Trust This Computer prompt if it appears.
- Try another USB port and a known-good cable.
- Confirm Apple Devices is installed and up to date, then restart both the PC and iPhone.
- Use USB rather than Wi-Fi while diagnosing the connection, and check whether Windows recognizes the phone at all.

A song is in Apple Music on the PC but not on the iPhone
First play the song on the PC and confirm the original file is still in its location. Then check that the correct iPhone is selected, music syncing is enabled, and the song falls within the selected artists, albums, genres, or playlists. Also check available iPhone storage. If the library uses Sync Library for an Apple Music subscription, use that cloud workflow rather than expecting the subscription track to appear through cable sync.
For a quick test, select one small playlist containing a known-good local file and apply the sync. If that works, review the broader selection or the missing file’s location and format.

A sync warning says existing music may be removed
Pause before selecting Apply if the summary or warning is unexpected. Automatic syncing follows the current PC library and selected content; it is not necessarily additive. Music on the iPhone that came from another computer or library may be removed when you change sync arrangements. Back up the PC library, review the selected content, and consider starting with a small playlist. Do not proceed on the assumption that syncing will preserve every existing iPhone track.
There is not enough space
Check free space on the iPhone and choose a smaller set of albums or playlists in Apple Devices. A fixed storage estimate is not useful for every library because song sizes vary. Avoid selecting the entire library if it exceeds available space; automatic fill is an option when you do not need a curated selection.
Files went missing after moving folders, or a format will not import
If a song stopped playing in the PC library after you moved its folder, restore it to the original location or remove and re-import it from its new stable location. Some protected or incompatible formats may not import or play. Apple’s iTunes import documentation, for example, notes that protected WMA files cannot be added; unprotected WMA handling can depend on the workflow. Do not assume every audio format is supported in every Windows Apple app.
Wi-Fi sync stalls or the phone disappears
Make sure the PC and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the iPhone has already been paired or configured for wireless syncing. For a large first transfer, switch back to USB. If Wi-Fi sync repeatedly stalls, reconnect by cable and apply the sync there.

No—not as a normal USB flash-drive copy into Apple’s Music library. The supported Windows route for local music is to import it into the PC music library and sync through Apple Devices (or an applicable legacy iTunes workflow). A third-party player may have its own file-transfer method, but copying a generic file that way does not automatically add it to the iPhone’s native Music library.
