To move an element in Canva, select it and drag it to a new spot. For smaller adjustments on a computer, select the object and press an arrow key; hold Shift with an arrow key to move it farther. If it seems stuck, check whether it is locked, covered by another object, grouped, or in text-editing or crop mode.
Move one element on a computer
- Open your design and click the object once. A selection outline or handles should appear.
- Place the pointer inside the selected object, away from its corner and side handles.
- Click and drag the object to its new position. Use Canva’s alignment guides as visual references, then release the mouse.
Dragging from the body of the object changes its position. Dragging a corner or side handle usually resizes it instead. With text, select the text box to move the box; double-clicking the text can put you into text-editing mode instead. Canva documents desktop and mobile editing workflows separately, and controls can vary by device and design type (Canva text editing help).
Move an element in the Canva mobile app
- Open the design and tap the element.
- Keep your finger on the selected object and drag it where you want it.
- Release your finger. If the target is small or crowded, zoom in and try again.
When objects overlap, a tap may select the topmost one rather than the one you want. Tap an exposed part of the target or use the available Layers, Position, Arrange, or overflow controls. Mobile toolbar placement and available actions can differ from desktop, and not every Canva document type supports the same transformations.

On desktop, select the object and press the left, right, up, or down arrow key to nudge it. Hold Shift while pressing an arrow key to move it farther per keystroke. Canva’s official keyboard-shortcut reference lists these movement shortcuts; it does not establish a universal pixel distance, so do not assume a fixed number of pixels per press. Shortcuts can vary with operating system or language, and may not work as expected while you are editing text rather than selecting its box.

For alignment, look for Position, Arrange, or a related control in the editor toolbar or menu. Depending on the design and editor view, these controls may offer page-relative alignment, such as centering or aligning edges, and even distribution for multiple objects. Use alignment and distribution tools when you want a consistent layout rather than adjusting each object by eye. Canva’s editing and designing help covers editor features such as guides and layers. Do not expect X and Y coordinate fields to be available for every object or design type.
Move several elements together
To move a selection without changing the spacing between its objects, select the first element, then hold Shift and select the others. Drag one of the selected elements to move them together. If you will reposition them as a unit repeatedly, group them first using the toolbar or context menu.
Canva’s shortcut reference lists Command + G on Mac or Ctrl + G on Windows to group selected elements, and Command + Shift + G or Ctrl + Shift + G to ungroup. Grouping helps prevent accidental spacing changes, but can make selecting a single component harder. Ungroup when you need to edit items independently; group again once the layout is settled.

Bring an element forward or send it behind another
Changing an object’s position on the canvas is different from changing its place in the layer stack. If an object is hidden or difficult to select, use the editor’s Position, Layers, or Arrange controls to change its order. Depending on the interface, options may include moving forward or backward one layer, bringing to front, or sending to back. Layer order changes what appears on top; it does not change the object’s canvas coordinates.
Canva’s shortcut reference lists these layer-order keys for selected objects:
- Move forward: Command + ] on Mac; Ctrl + ] on Windows.
- Move backward: Command + [ on Mac; Ctrl + [ on Windows.
- Bring to front: Option + Command + ] on Mac; Alt + Ctrl + ] on Windows.
- Send to back: Option + Command + [ on Mac; Alt + Ctrl + [ on Windows.
Shortcuts may change, and a key combination can behave differently if the editor has focus inside text. If a command does not work, use the current toolbar or menu instead.

Unlock an element before moving it
A locked element normally cannot be repositioned. Select it if possible, choose the lock control or the relevant menu option to unlock it, move it, then lock it again if needed. Exact control placement depends on the editor, selection, device, and viewport. If another object is covering it, use Layers or Arrange to locate and select it first, or temporarily move the covering object.
Canva’s plan comparison lists locking among its features, but account and plan availability can change. Do not assume that needing to move an object means you need a paid plan; check the controls available in your own editor.
Move an image inside a frame or grid
A frame and the image it contains are separate things to move:

- Move the frame: Select its outer boundary and drag it. The frame and its contents move together.
- Reposition the image inside it: Enter the image’s crop or edit mode, then drag the image within the frame. The frame stays in place while the visible crop changes.
This distinction is useful for profile photos, thumbnails, collages, and mockups. If dragging shifts the whole frame when you meant to change the crop, undo and enter the image’s crop/edit controls. Canva’s flip and rotate help also distinguishes working with images in frames or grids.

To put an object on a different page in the same design, select it and copy, then paste it onto the destination page. Use cut and paste if you want it removed from the original page; copy and paste leaves it there. You can also duplicate the object and move the duplicate when you want to keep the original.

Why can’t I move an element in Canva?
- It is locked: Unlock it using the lock control or menu.
- Another object is on top: Select the target through Layers or change the covering object’s layer order.
- You selected the wrong object: Zoom in, click a visible part of the target, or use the layer list. Canva’s shortcut reference also lists Tab and Shift + Tab for selecting the next or previous element in supported editor contexts.
- You are editing text: Exit text-editing mode and select the text box’s outer boundary.
- You are dragging a handle: Start the drag inside the object, away from resize handles.
- The object is grouped: Move the group, enter it to select a component, or ungroup it.
- You are in crop mode: Exit crop mode to move the frame, or stay in crop mode to reposition its contents.
- The design type has different controls: Canva features vary by editor and content type. For example, its current help page says rotating elements in Canva Docs is unavailable; that limitation concerns rotation and should not be assumed to apply to every design or movement operation.
- The canvas interaction seems stuck: Try undoing the last action, reselecting the object, or reopening the design if the editor is temporarily unresponsive.
If an object disappears after a drag, press Command + Z on Mac or Ctrl + Z on Windows to undo. Otherwise, check whether it was moved off the page or behind another element, then use Layers or Arrange to find and bring it forward. If several changes have gone wrong, Canva’s editing controls include version-history features; availability and location depend on the current editor.

Shortcuts are most useful when an object is selected and the canvas has focus. Canva may revise them, and behavior can vary with the current editor, operating system, and whether text editing is active. For the latest list, check Canva’s keyboard-shortcut help.
