Move a website-builder site to WordPress as a planned rebuild and migration, not a one-click theme transfer. Export the content the builder supports, recreate its design and features where necessary, preserve existing URLs or add one-to-one 301 redirects, and keep the old site live until the WordPress version passes checks. You can connect your existing domain to the new site or transfer its registration; those are separate choices.
What moves—and what may need to be rebuilt
The migration method depends on the builder and the WordPress destination. WordPress.com says its import options cover sites from platforms including Wix and Squarespace, and it also offers assisted migration. An import can move supported content, but it does not necessarily reproduce the original site as a working design.
Expect to check separately whether you can bring over pages, posts, images, products, customer data, and other records. Themes, layouts, fonts, widgets, forms, memberships, ecommerce features, and integrations may need to be recreated or replaced. Squarespace’s official guidance, for example, says some content can be imported, but the former layout, design, and fonts cannot.

Do not assume a builder export includes every asset or feature, or promise a pixel-identical result unless the platforms explicitly support it. Before choosing a migration route, compare the source platform’s export depth, design portability, ecommerce and customer-data portability, redirect controls, domain and DNS arrangements, integrations, and likely manual work.

Choose your WordPress destination
WordPress.com
Consider WordPress.com if its managed hosting and import options fit your needs. Its support documentation describes direct imports and assisted migration. A full-site migration replaces everything on the destination site, so use a new site or one that contains no material you need to keep.
Self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress requires a hosting provider and a WordPress installation. It is the better fit when you need control over the server, plugins, themes, or database. Plan for backups: WordPress’s migration handbook calls for backing up the WordPress directory, media, plugins, other files, and database when moving servers.
Move the site in a controlled sequence
- Inventory the current site. Make a complete list of indexable URLs, pages, posts, images, downloads, products, forms, redirects, metadata, analytics tags, and third-party integrations. Record the current domain, DNS provider, email-related DNS records, and URL patterns. A crawl or builder export can help establish the URL list.
- Save exports and preserve a rollback option. Download the content and media the builder makes available. Keep the old site online and maintain its subscription while you build and validate the replacement. Before changing URLs or moving a WordPress installation between servers, follow WordPress’s guidance to back up the relevant files and database.
- Set up the destination. Create the WordPress.com site or arrange hosting and install WordPress for a self-hosted site. Build the theme, block designs, pages, and templates on the destination before sending visitors there. Configure SSL as part of the new site setup.
- Check feature replacements before committing. For an ecommerce or membership site, confirm that the planned WordPress setup supports the required products, customers, payments, subscriptions, account flows, and transactional email. Identify replacement options for forms, custom collections, animations, and integrations that the source cannot export.
- Import supported material and rebuild the rest. Use the applicable import or assisted-migration route for content the platforms support. Recreate builder-only sections and features that have no usable export path. Review imported pages rather than assuming their appearance and behavior match the original.
- Preserve the address of each page where practical. Match old slugs and permalink patterns on WordPress when you can. For every URL that must change, maintain a redirect sheet with the old URL, new URL, status, and owner. Set a permanent 301 redirect from each changed address to its closest replacement. Learn WordPress explains that a 301 indicates a permanent move to search engines; implementation options include Redirection, Simple 301 Redirects, and All-in-One SEO. Avoid redirect chains and do not send every retired page to the homepage.
- Test the staging site before cutover. Work through the checks below using the old URL inventory and the features your site depends on.
- Connect the domain or transfer its registration. Choose the approach that fits your domain and DNS arrangements, then schedule the change for a time when you can monitor it. Keep existing email records intact.
- Monitor the live site before retiring the builder. Review errors, traffic, forms, sales, and customer support reports after cutover. Keep the old site or a working redirect layer available while the new site settles, and cancel the builder only once the replacement and domain are stable.
Connect the domain or transfer it?
Connecting a domain changes where it points; transferring a domain changes its registrar or domain host. You do not have to transfer registration just to use the domain with WordPress. Wix distinguishes the options this way: when a domain is transferred to Wix, Wix becomes its domain host, while a connection can leave registration with the current host. The DNS method—nameservers or pointing—also affects where DNS records are managed.

|---|---|---|
| Connect the existing domain | DNS is updated to point the domain to the new site; registration can remain with the current provider. | Confirm whether nameserver or pointing changes are required, where DNS will be managed, and that email records remain in place. |
| Transfer the domain | The domain registration moves to a different provider, which becomes the domain host. | Check the domain’s lock status and obtain any required authorization or EPP code before starting the transfer. |
Wix’s documentation says DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to take effect. Keep the old site available during propagation so visitors resolving the old destination are not sent to a dead site.

Pre-launch checks for content, SEO, and site functions
- URLs and redirects: test every old address against the URL inventory. Confirm that unchanged URLs load and changed ones redirect directly to their intended replacements. Look for 404 errors, unexpected redirects, and redirect chains.
- Pages and media: inspect navigation, responsive layouts, images, downloads, and key page content on the new site.
- Forms and accounts: submit forms and test account or membership flows. Confirm that submissions reach the expected destination.
- Commerce: test product pages and the checkout and payment flow, plus customer and subscription functions that apply to your site.
- Search and measurement settings: check metadata, canonicals, robots.txt, the XML sitemap, analytics tags, and page status codes.
- Domain and email: verify that the domain reaches the new site and that email-related DNS records have not been lost or altered.
URL preservation is an important SEO control, but it does not guarantee that search visibility will remain unchanged. Keep old paths where practical, use appropriate permanent redirects where they are not, and monitor Search Console coverage and analytics after launch.

During the transition, review server logs, Search Console coverage, analytics, form submissions, sales, and support tickets. Use the old URL list to identify missing pages or incorrect redirects, then correct them promptly. Retire the builder only after the WordPress site and domain are stable and the features visitors rely on are working.
