Use Make’s RSS app to watch competitors’ published updates, filter the items that matter, and send matches to a spreadsheet or alert channel. When a competitor’s important information lives on a page without a useful feed—such as a pricing or product page—use Make’s documented Browse AI integration to monitor that page and route completed task data. These are different inputs: RSS finds new feed items; page monitoring detects changes on selected pages.

Choose what you need to monitor

Start by identifying the signal, because the Make scenario depends on it.

Need Recommended route What it watches Important limitation
Announcements, blog posts, news and other newly published items Make RSS New entries in an RSS or Atom feed You must have a usable feed URL.
Pricing, product or other page changes Browse AI with Make Results from a monitoring task on a selected web page Compatibility and extraction quality vary by site; the integration page does not guarantee coverage.

Make’s RSS integration page says it can “Monitor news feeds across your favorite web publications by automating the RSS app to instantly capture fresh content links.” That is a vendor description, not a guarantee of delivery speed or completeness.

Find and validate a competitor’s RSS or Atom feed

Make’s RSS documentation lists a feed URL as a requirement. If you do not know it, try common paths such as /feed or /rss, or inspect the page’s source for an RSS or Atom link. These are discovery suggestions, not a promise that every site publishes a feed.

  1. List the competitor publications you want to follow and the topics that distinguish relevant items.
  2. Try the site’s documented feed link, then test likely paths such as https://example.com/feed or https://example.com/rss.
  3. Open the resulting URL and confirm that it returns an RSS or Atom document with item titles, links and dates rather than an HTML error page.
  4. Keep the original feed URL in your monitoring notes. If a publisher changes it, the scenario will need updating.

For a source that has no feed, do not force an RSS workflow. Move to page monitoring instead.

Build an RSS competitor-monitoring scenario in Make

1. Add the RSS trigger

  1. Create a new scenario in Make.
  2. Add the RSS app and choose Watch RSS feed items, the trigger described in Make’s RSS materials.
  3. Paste the validated RSS or Atom feed URL.
  4. Choose the starting point according to whether you want future items only or also want to process existing entries. Review the module’s current options in the RSS app documentation.
  5. Run the scenario once and inspect the sample bundle. Confirm that the title, link, publication date and description fields are populated.

2. Filter for competitor and topic terms

Add a filter after the RSS trigger. Use terms that identify the competitor, product line or event you actually care about, such as pricing, launch, API or a named product. Make’s Email and RSS integration page documents the pattern of watching specified feeds for new posts containing a keyword.

  • Use several narrowly chosen terms instead of one broad word that matches everything.
  • Include spelling and capitalization variants when the source is inconsistent.
  • Test both a known relevant item and an irrelevant item before activating the schedule.
  • Review false positives periodically; keywords that worked during a launch may become noisy later.

3. Log matches in Google Sheets

Connect Google Sheets after the filter to create a searchable history. Make’s Google Sheets and RSS material documents this integration pattern.

A practical sheet can contain:

  • Competitor
  • Source URL
  • Item title
  • Detected date
  • Original item link
  • Relevance note

Map the RSS item’s title, link and date into the row. Add the relevance note yourself or with a later Make step. These columns are an organizing recommendation, not a required Make schema.

4. Send an alert when a match arrives

Instead of—or in addition to—Sheets, connect the filtered item to your preferred notification route. Include the competitor name, title, original link and date so recipients can investigate without opening Make. Make’s Email and RSS integration shows the general feed-to-message workflow.

5. Schedule and review the scenario

Set a schedule that fits the importance of the source, then review the first runs. The cited Make pages describe supported modules and examples, but they do not establish a universal delivery interval, operation allowance, accuracy rate or monitoring coverage. Treat the schedule and filtering rules as settings to tune for your own sources.

Monitor a competitor’s pricing page when RSS is not enough

A feed reports newly published entries; it normally does not tell you that a number, plan name or feature block changed on a page. Make documents an integration with Browse AI for monitoring competitor pricing and product updates, with Watch Task Execution Finished as the trigger. The resulting task data can then be routed to business tools through Make.

  1. Create or select a Browse AI task for the competitor page and define the fields or page changes you need to capture.
  2. Confirm that the target page can be accessed and that the task extracts the relevant content. The integration documentation does not establish that every site works or that every element will be captured.
  3. In Make, add Browse AI and select Watch Task Execution Finished.
  4. Map the completed task’s data to Google Sheets, email or another destination.
  5. Store the page URL, capture date and extracted values so you can compare successive results.
  6. Inspect several completed tasks before relying on alerts. A task completion event is not, by itself, proof that a meaningful business change occurred.

Use this route as an optional third-party website-monitoring service connected to Make, not as evidence that Make itself extracts every page.

Design a useful competitor log

A monitoring system is easier to operate when every record answers four questions: who changed, what changed, where was it found and when was it detected.

Field RSS example Page-monitoring example
Competitor Acme Acme
Signal type Blog item Pricing page task
Original URL Feed item link Monitored page URL
Detected date Feed publication or scenario date Task completion date
Observed content Title and description Captured fields or change details
Review status Unread, reviewed or dismissed Confirmed change, false positive or needs review

Keep the original link even when your alert contains a summary. That makes it possible to verify context and distinguish a genuine product update from a repeated or corrected item.

Troubleshoot common failures

The RSS module returns an error

  • Cause: The URL is a web page, redirect or unavailable feed rather than RSS or Atom.
  • Fix: Recheck the publisher’s feed link, try the documented discovery paths, inspect page source, and open the final URL to verify its format.

No items pass the filter

  • Cause: The feed’s title or description uses wording different from your keywords.
  • Fix: Inspect a sample bundle, filter on the field that actually contains the term, and add carefully chosen variants.

Too many irrelevant alerts

  • Cause: A broad keyword or a general publication feed.
  • Fix: Add competitor-specific terms, require multiple conditions where appropriate, or split sources into separate routes.

The page-monitoring task finishes but the data is wrong

  • Cause: The page structure, loading behavior or access controls changed.
  • Fix: Recheck the Browse AI task against the live page, narrow the fields being captured, and treat the result as needing review until verified.

A scenario appears to miss a publication

  • Cause: The publisher may not expose that item in the selected feed, or the item may not match the filter.
  • Fix: Compare the publisher’s page with the feed, test another official feed if available, and review filter conditions. Do not assume that an RSS feed represents every page update.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

There is no fair cost, speed or accuracy comparison between the RSS and Browse AI routes in the cited material. Their operational behavior depends on the feed, page, schedule, filters and destination you configure. Start with a small set of high-value sources, inspect actual bundles and task results, and expand only after the records are trustworthy.

  • RSS is usually the simpler first test when a publisher provides a feed because the input is already structured.
  • Page monitoring is appropriate when the signal is a change to a specified page rather than a new publication.
  • Keep a review state in your log so people can separate verified changes from automatic detections.
  • Revisit URLs and selectors when a competitor redesigns its site.
  • Do not claim that alerts are instantaneous, that every site is supported or that every detected change is meaningful; the cited pages do not establish those guarantees.

If you need screenshots of competitor pages for a visual record, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

One GET request is enough:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, device presets, custom JavaScript and CSS, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDFs, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture.

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can Make watch a competitor’s RSS feed?

Yes. The RSS app can watch and retrieve items from a supplied RSS or Atom URL. You must provide a usable feed URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I monitor a competitor’s pricing page?

Use a page-monitoring task through the documented Browse AI and Make integration, then trigger on “Watch Task Execution Finished” and route the resulting data to your chosen destination.

Does RSS monitoring detect every change on a website?

No. RSS tracks items exposed in the feed. Changes made directly to a pricing or product page require a separate page-monitoring approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I monitor a site that has no RSS feed?

Use a website-monitoring task connected through Browse AI and Make, provided the target site and the task’s extraction setup support the page.

Should I put RSS and page monitoring in the same scenario?

Usually keep them as separate routes so publication alerts and page-change results can have different filters, records and review rules.
