To change a web page just for a screenshot, edit its rendered HTML or CSS in your browser’s developer tools, check the result, then capture the page. These edits are local to your browser; they do not publish changes to the website. For a quick one-off, use the Elements panel in Chrome or the Inspector in Firefox. If a supported change must remain after a reload, Chrome’s Local Overrides can serve a saved local copy of a response instead.
Choose the right kind of edit
Start by deciding whether you need a temporary visual adjustment or a change that persists while you reload the page. This matters because editing the displayed page and changing the local copy of a network response are different workflows.
- One-off screenshot: edit the rendered HTML or CSS in the browser’s Elements or Inspector panel. This is quick, but a reload can discard the changes.
- Repeatable Chrome edit: use Local Overrides for supported response content or response headers. Chrome saves a local copy and serves it on reload.
- Selected element only: Firefox Inspector has a “Screenshot Node” context-menu option for the selected node. It captures that element, not a full-page view.
Browser developer tools are for changing what you see locally, not for publishing an edit to a website. Do not treat a modified screenshot as proof that the live site has changed.

Use this method when you need to adjust a heading, hide a distracting element, change a color, or alter spacing for a single capture. The browser’s labels and panel arrangement can vary by version, but the relevant tools are the Elements panel in Chrome and the Inspector in Firefox.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Open the page in Chrome or Firefox, then open developer tools. In Chrome, open Elements; in Firefox, open Inspector.
- Use the element picker to select the text or element you want to change. If the selection is difficult, find the corresponding node in the HTML tree.
- For a text or markup change, edit the displayed HTML or content. Firefox’s Inspector supports editing tags, attributes, and content directly in the HTML pane; for a larger markup change, use Edit As HTML.
- For appearance changes, edit CSS rules in Chrome’s Elements > Styles panel. Firefox’s Page Inspector is also intended for examining and modifying HTML and CSS.
- Check the page at the intended viewport. Close or move developer tools if they cover the part of the page you want to capture.
- Take the screenshot with your browser’s or operating system’s screenshot method. In Firefox, to capture just a selected element, right-click its node in Inspector and choose Screenshot Node.
These edits change the page as rendered in your current browser session. Unless you use a persistence workflow, a reload may restore the original page. Chrome’s Changes panel can help you inspect a diff of DevTools edits, but it is a review aid rather than a way to preserve those edits across reloads.
Keep supported changes across reloads in Chrome
Chrome DevTools Local Overrides are useful when you need to repeat a screenshot or inspect a page after reloading it with a local response change in place. Chrome documents overrides for web content and HTTP response headers, including XHR and fetch requests.
- Open Chrome DevTools and select Network.
- Find the request whose response you want to change. Right-click it and choose Override content or Override headers, depending on what you need to edit.
- When prompted, choose a local folder and grant DevTools access to it.
- Edit the saved response copy in Sources, or edit the response headers in the header editor. Save the change.
- Reload the page and check that the locally modified response is being used. Make your screenshot after confirming the intended content and layout appear.
Local Overrides have important boundaries. They do not preserve edits made directly in the Elements DOM tree. Chrome also notes that CSS edits in Styles are not saved when the CSS source is an HTML file; edit HTML files in Sources instead. Overrides automatically disable the cache, and source-mapped files cannot be overridden. If you only need a DOM tweak for one image, do not assume saving an override will preserve it.

Review or undo DevTools code changes
Chrome’s Changes panel can show a diff for changes made in DevTools and offers a revert action for a changed file. Chrome describes tracking HTML in Sources when Local Overrides are enabled, CSS in Styles or Sources, and JavaScript in Sources. Use it to review what changed or to revert a file; for persistence across reloads, use Local Overrides rather than relying on the Changes panel alone.
A practical check before capture is to compare the modified page with the original and ensure that only the intended local changes remain. If you are preparing an image for a mockup or explanation, keep a note of what you altered so a viewer does not mistake the result for the current live website.
Chrome or Firefox: which workflow fits?
| Need | Chrome DevTools | Firefox Inspector |
|---|---|---|
| Edit rendered HTML | Use Elements or Sources; Local Overrides can preserve supported response changes, subject to their limitations. | Edit tags, attributes, and content in the HTML pane; use Edit As HTML for larger markup changes. |
| Edit CSS | Use Elements > Styles for live styling; supported changes can be preserved with Local Overrides, subject to limitations. | Page Inspector supports examining and modifying HTML and CSS. |
| Keep changes after reload | Local Overrides save supported response content locally and serve it on reload. | Not established by the Firefox documentation cited here; do not assume this workflow is equivalent. |
| Capture a selected element | Not established by the Chrome documentation cited here. | Inspector’s context menu includes Screenshot Node. |
Use Chrome when preserving supported response changes across reloads is central to the task. Use Firefox’s documented Screenshot Node option when the deliverable is a selected element. For a simple temporary edit, either browser has tools for changing the locally rendered HTML or CSS; there is no basis here for calling one universally better.

If you want a screenshot of a web page without manually opening developer tools, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It takes a URL and can return an image or PDF. It does not replace the local HTML-editing workflow above when you need to demonstrate your own changed markup. For a clean capture of a page, a one-call request looks like this:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides tools for AI clients, including Claude and Cursor, to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it.

The edit disappears when I reload
That is expected for a temporary edit to the rendered DOM or CSS. If you need a supported response change to survive reloads in Chrome, configure Local Overrides for the relevant request. Direct edits in the Elements DOM tree are not saved by Local Overrides.

My CSS change is not saved
Check what file supplies the CSS. Chrome documents that Styles edits are not saved when the CSS source is an HTML file. Edit the HTML in Sources, or use a supported override workflow for the response you need to change.
The local override does not appear after reload
Confirm that you selected the intended Network request, granted DevTools access to the folder, saved the modified response or headers, and reloaded the page. Also check whether the file is source-mapped; Chrome says source-mapped files cannot be overridden.
The page behaves differently after enabling overrides
Local Overrides automatically disable cache. A changed response or header can also affect what the browser renders. Check the exact overridden request and compare the result with the original before capturing.

Developer tools cover the content I want
Move or close the tools after making the edit, then verify that the target content is visible before taking a browser or operating-system screenshot. If the only desired output is a selected element and you are using Firefox, use Screenshot Node instead of trying to crop a full-page capture.
I changed the page, but the actual website is unchanged
That is the expected result: these browser tools modify your local rendered view or use a local response copy. They do not publish changes to the site owner’s server.
